Re: The official where is Max at thread

^^^^^

Thompson mentioned Rooke in a presser a fortnight ago. He was much more vague about when he would be back than he was our other injured players. But he seemed to be saying that he would be back late into the H & A season. They are hoping he will be up for finals in other words.

By the way, Rooke is absolutely part of our best 22. Re-watch the 2009 GF if any one needs confirmation.

As much as I'm lovin' the season so far, it's a little bit empty not having Max out there huffin' and puffin' and blowin' the house down. Kinda like being offered free beer, but saddened that's it's VB and not Coopers. I'd love to see him somewhere this season, even if it's just sittin' on the boundary watching the boys while listening to his ipod, glaring down the oppositon. Like the air we breath, and the sex we crave, we need our Max to make it all worthwhile.

How do we get Max back in to the team with JPod now firmly entrenched? To my mind, JPod and Moons work well on the ground together at FF and CHF, whereas Maxy was at CHF and Moons at FF. If we have THawk back and Max it will be challenging getting all these guys to fit, as we still need SJ, Byrnes, Varcoe and Stoker to squeeze in.

Hopefully we can get Hawkins back as the mobile ruck and get Maxy in as a defensive forward somewhere, perhaps alternating with Moons at CHF.

we would still be in ahead of wojo and varcoe for me. He is needed for the finals run this year and just brings so much hardness and courage to our team.

A FULLY FIT Max Rooke yes. Whether he can do that in time is the big question, especially since I would think he would need a solid month in the VFL to show he's fully right to go before you'd pick him for the finals. So for me the date is pretty much the start of August, if he's not playing VFL by then, well....

Re: The official where is Max at thread

I don't think anyone would deny a fully fit Rooke would be in our 22, he adds something that pretty much no-one else can with his raw grunt around the ball, invaluable when up and running.

At this stage I would probably still back him in for finals if he can manage the knee, but he does need to start training very soon, otherwise can him and save him for next years premiership assault!

Each to his own, but Varcoe and Wojo are way ahead currently, and there is no imminent return of Max. All 3 at their best are required, as we saw last year in the GF. All 3 are unique and special.

I think Max fills an entirely different role to Varcoe or Wojack...he is certainly not renowned for his pace or silky skills. Max fills the hard nut factor and scares his opposition into submission with constant second, third and fourth efforts at the contested ball....Not only that, but he also plays a role as a marking option in the forward line and of course a ferocious defensive 50 player (in that regard similar to varcoe). His place is certainly unique, and one that is required, however he needs fitness and form to be able to play it.

I'd say he'll be competing with Stokes. Stokes can be a tough nut who has shown an ability to stop a running backman at times (he was good in 07' at it when Rooke was spare parts man), so they probably play a similar role now, but obviously Max has the better reputation and aura.

Agree. A fit and firing Max Rooke sets the tone for his teammates, which is why he has been so important in finals. Puts his body on the line and just gets it done.

The way he brought down Clarke in the Grand Final was amazing. If his teammates weren't up and about before then, they certainly would have been after. Same goes for the crowd.

Chapman has always been a similar player, more so this season in Rooke's absence. Never takes a backward step, and - like Rooke - he expects his teammates to go down fighting with him.

I know who I'd prefer agaist the Saints, and it wouldn't be 11 possession, no tackle Varcoe, re Max Rooke.

Please no comparison.Rooke is way way ahead, hard, relentless and skilled. Varcoe , well when the gong is good and we are winning he is ok , when we are not, like Friday night nowhere to be seen.
Friday night was night for small forwards . Where was he? Mind you Byrnes didn't do much either.

...& Stokes.

They were cleverly sucked up the ground and didn't work hard enough to run forward into space. Which is why a number of times we had mids kicking to either a vacant F/L or a 1 on 3.

Basically, poor work rate.

Why would anyone compare Rooke with Varcoe--like comparing Hamill and Milne. Rooke, fit, would be perfect in Fri pm conditions against Saints. He was useless against Blues. Useless. Injured maybe. Since Varcoe's return, he's contributed a lot more than Rooke did for most of 09, bar the GF. Yet Rooke is not there for stats and even goals, but he can score.
We need both fit and firing for a fully functional team. Stokes, on numbers and balance , would likely go for Rooke, if he was fit, which sounds unlikely.

SO any news on Rooke...anybody seen him train or is there still a lot of uncertainty? The weekend just reminded me of how important he is for us, simply put, we need his physicality as playing Stokes, Byrnes and Varcoe probably leaves us too vulnerable in that area.

If he can manage the injury i would expect bomber feels him worthy enough to include.

Max Rooke three weeks away according to press conference from bomber....which you think would include a generous serve of 4 weeks in the VFL....

Any news on Rooke actually getting out and training? I am convinced he is the difference between Geelong winning and losing this year, absolutely convinced!

He is still listed as indefinite as of today so I'll believe it when I actually see him start playing VFL.

I agree needs at least a month though so the dice will have to be rolled soon.

You would have to think he would roll the dice considering the early reports on the injury suggested it is actually not something that will get worse. I expect the decision would be to time his run to give him enough match practice to be in consideration....much like Otto' last year. You would have to think that Rnd 16/17 is the cutoff date.

I really hope it's going to be a Ottens like year for Max miss most of the year then come back late in the year to gain a bit of fitness and touch then be cherry ripe for the finals cause we really need our Manimal come finals time when the going gets a bit tougher and the hits are a little harder

amen to that

Although I envision that Mad Max has retreated to a sea cave somewhere between Geelong and Warnaambool living entirely on washed up shark carcasses and fashioning social company from etchings in nearby rock....i would think that perhaps somebody may have seen him down at the club or at least (hopefully) running a lap or two?
