Let's not forget that big Maxie was at one stage Australia's best-selling home-grown author, probably been overtaken by Chopper Read now. :p

He was popular with the average suburban slob, which was reflected in his book sales. Joe Cricketfan loved him. Roughly the same time the best-sellers stopped, so did his stint as a commentator... maybe Channel 9 figured he wasn't popular anymore, or figured that out of all the former Test players turned commentators he was held with less reverence than the others, based on their playing days.

Didn't Channel 9 plug their production as "the former Test captains" a few years ago, with Benaud, Lawry, both Chappells and Tony Greig all geting their mugs on the ad?

I once was told both max and skull were not suitable to the serious analysis of the time. Skull was given one stint in the box by 9 and upset them with his laugh and was never invited back.
