what do people think of playing maxwell up forward as a defender on fisher who always seems to dominate against us. with cloke and anthony probably out i would like to see maxwell and medhurst in. i think goldsacks been fine down back so leave as is and it might give us more options come september

Considering our spread of goalkickers, this isn't completely absurd for him to play a negating forward role - if not very unorthodox. Do other players in the league play this role? Can't say I've heard of this happening...

my thinking is this will give dawes every chance one out against his opponent which would likely be dawson and makes fisher responsible for his opponent maxwell.gilbert is the other who goes third up in marking contests and hopefully his hands would be full with an improved medhurst returning. i hope we try it, a bit left field but nothing ventured nothing gained. we need to beat this mob they have owned us past few years

I think Campbell Brown played a similar role on Scarlett during Saturday's epic. I like the idea, as it reduces the run off the opponents defense and considering we can more than cover our own run off the back line with the likes of Shaw and O' Brien, I hope to see the plan eventuate.

It helps that Maxwell is an experienced player too, he'll know where and when to run off Fisher so that it won't hurt the other leads of Dawes, Medhurst and the resting ruckmen.

Alternatively, instead of crazy plans, we just kick straight this time round and demolish the Saints...

Carlton's Ryan Houlihan has played as a "defensive forward" with some success this year. He's managed to average 18.38 disposals, 4.23 marks and 1.15 goals, 0.92 goal assists and 87.38 Champion Data Player Ranking points (a career high) per game this year, while keeping the opposition's most attacking defender quiet.

Usually when Campbell Brown goes forward for Hawthorn it's to play a negating role on an opposition defender as well.

Personally, I'd like to see Maxwell take this role against the Saints, specifically to combat Sam Fisher, who has averaged 31.50 disposals, 12.75 marks and 133.50 Champion Data Player Ranking points per game in his past 4 games against us.

I've heard that but is nothing defensive about the way he has been playing, he doesn't lay one good tackle on in that forward line.

I think Goldy could do that job if you want someone to stop Gilbert getting all the free air ball he gets. But I don't think that is our style. Forwards need to be accountable these days for that, we don't need specialists like Campbell Brown who only get a game because he tries and doesn't have any skill, like Max Rooke too

Not if he kicks a few goals and is one of our better players?

Has someone cast a spell over him? Does he bet on St. Kilda on the net?

I could think of a dozen reasons why we might not win the game next week and Fraser playing or not playing isnt one of them.

st kilda play a tough tackling contested type of football, not one of frasers attributes. i can just imagine fisher or blake running off him as fraser either falls to the ground looking for a free or just being weak at the contest. im sorry but i have lost faith in him and he is hardly dominating vfl at the moment

well at least thats a better reason than saying if fraser plays, the team will lose. I just cant see the advantage of collingwood supporters trashing one of the players.

I followed the VFL game on sunday and he was ok without dominating. He probably played better the previous week. However, he is still miles ahead of Wood at this stage. The question is whether Leroy can do the second ruck duties during finals time.

btw. I thought your idea of playing Maxwell up forward is good one but there are quite a few players who could do the job.... Harry or Goldsack would also put defensive pressure on the saints backs.

Nice idea to have Maxwell as a defensive forward but I really think you are robbing Peter to pay Paul. We need all forwards contributing this week, especially considering Cloke and Anthony will most likely be on the sidelines due to suspension.

Ben Reid is our most likely to go forward and try to snag a few. At the very least he needs to present and be dangerous, forcing Fisher to be accountable and not have the luxury to peel off and be third man up. There is no way known that Fisher will pay respect to Reid early on, so this is a great chance for Reid to do a big job for the team.

Maxwell will come straight back into the backline as our general, marshalling the boys and cutting off passes to Reiwoldt and Koschitzke. He is one of the best in the league playing that role, which brings me back to my earlier comment about robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Cheers, PremierPies:thumbsu:

i would much rather maxwell doing the role rather than reid or goldsack, maxy has the intensity and strength to make this work where reid is still learning the caper ( plus hes proved that he can play on kosi ) and the sacks dash out of the backline is essential against the frontal pressure of the saints. maxwells proved he can do a specific role like he did on thompson against crows in the finals 2 years ago. i know its a completely different task but with his intensity in the forward line there will be no easy third man up marks for the saints. i know it probably wont happen but we need something different with the loss of cloke and anthonys defensive efforts are non exisitent.

Reckon it is a really good idea.

Maxwell is the best option for this.....in recent games against the Saints he has been comprehensively outplayed in terms of influence on the game as the loose man by Fisher.

Harry needs to play down back on one of Schneider or Milne, Toovey takes the other. Heath is too important down back.

Reid aint smart enough to play as a 'defensive' forward and may not even get a game if N.Brown is fit as I feel N.Brown much better match-up for Kosi.

Maxwell has the smarts and concentration to fulfil such a role, ala the 2008 EF shutdown job on S.Thompson.
