Firstly I HATE the necessity of this thread as I have unbounded respect for Maxy as a person, leader and clubman and most of all captain. . . BUT.

WHERE does he fit into the new game plan we are trying to implement???

This isn't the first and likely won't be the last thread on this subject, but it may be a first. . in one way at least. I'm an unabashed fan of Maxy and of his style of leadership but I feel it my duty to the club to at least air the subject of his imminent demise, both as captain and player.

DAMN I HATE THIS

Part of our problem lately has been our fragility coming out of the backline, it's no secret Bucks is desperate for better ball users - especially coming off half back, and Maxy's ball use is. . . ordinary you would say.

Repeatedly bombing it 40 -50 meters to a contest simply doesn't cut it nowadays.

Opposition clubs have worked him out and force him into one on ones where his generalship and third man up coverage are taken from us, thus ending his biggest physical asset to the club.

What does he have to offer - on the field - going into 2014 and beyond?

Would like to think he could improve his 1 V 1 TFB but remember this is a guy who built his game around being the loose intercept sweeper and it is probably not possible for him to change that at this stage of his career.

As a first tactic handballing more to a free target - so long as its not ALL the time (thus negating it) might help but that might mean that opposition teams would simply cover the other backs, thereby funnelling it to Maxy who they know will handball, thus allowing them more time to cover opponents upfield - especially on a fast rebound break.

In a younger player without Maxy's self-admitted . . restricted. . . skill set you could perhaps help him rebuild his game around different criteria, but at his age and with his narrow skill range, having played the loose man for so long its hard to see him being able to adapt to a new role.

Agree he is probably the best player I have ever seen with younger players and especially new boys.

I love Maxy and watch him closely. He does things others would never do but he is not fashionable.

I love him too and I love the little things he does as much as the next true believer BUT I'm worried the game has passed him by.

I still believe he starts round 1, probably as captain.

Well he gets beaten 1 on 1 and outmarked by Brent Harvey. Major concern, I don't know why we have not turned Maxxy into a defensive forward, seriously he would make a good FP solution.

Maxy ascended to great heights in 09/10 but has descended to spudness in the last few years.
It's well and truly over. It was nice of the club to re-sign him, shows loyalty to a long standing captain but he is so far past it if he plays next year in the seniors at all we can expect a shit year as it's a sign the coach doesn't know what he's doing.

Take the captaincy of him and give it to Pendles.

Let Maxwell fight for a spot in the best 22 instead of been given games because his captain and can't be dropped to the seconds.

Maxwell is a quality individual that has earned our respect. Skill-wise he is not in our best 22 and as far as our game plan goes, well, he's a square peg in a round hole.

He could add value by mentoring and supporting the young guns we're trying to develop.

Maxy was Collingwood's 6th most efficient disposer of the ball last year. Go figure that one! Says a lot about the rest of ém that old Maxy with his mungrel finger smashers could finish ahead of them in that stat!
He also is 2nd for 1%ers and 7th for tackles. 8th for time on ground and only 25th for clangers, equal 4th for rebound 50's.

Then it all gets a bit Sh@t like you would expect... 14th total disposal, 18th average disposals, 31st average contested possessions, 13th for marks, 14th average contested marks, 17th for clearances, 23rd for goal assists, 18th for inside 50's.

Yep, struggles to play with any sort of injury, and on playing ability he is right on the fringes. You can't question his leadership or his one percenters, but you take the captaincy away and he'll be fighting to keep his spot.

So?? The problem hasn't gone away, in fact with an evolving game plan more dependent on quality disposal coming out of the backline it has only gotten worse.

Until a solution is achieved it certainly won't be the last either.

I don't hate him at all, I hate people overrating him as a player but got nothing against Maxwell as a person.

My eyes are fine and Maxwell's kicking is that bad and DE is a bullshit stat to regurgitate as he can bomb it on Clokes head 5v1 and as long as Cloke contests it then it's deemed "effective".

Pendles will be captain in 2014, that is the coaches understanding.

Apparently Eade wants Maxwell gone but Buckley still loves him and there are many heated discussions. Be interesting to see what happens next year
