After thinking about it, and really having 24 hours not to get over my initial emotions, i have come to the conclusion that maybe it is not bomber.

All that the he can do is give the players a strategy, a game plan to work with. It is then up to the players to put this into practice. Its not him that goes and kicks the ball over to the opposition, or doesn't bother to chase hard.

The problem lies with the players and their ability to adapt to the plan bomber says. Its a laziness that must be wiped out. Nothing that bomber can do or say will get rid of this. It is up to the players to get their fingers out.

You hear after a game (and yes ive done it and said it) that bomber was out coached, he doesn't give it his all etc etc. Maybe in the coaches box changes are being made, team set ups edited, but at the end of the day thats all he can do. Its the players that are the ones that put it into action.

Instead of criticizing the coach, how about we have a good hard look at the playing list. At the end of the day they are the ones who are playing. Im not saying our list is shit and we need a massive clean out. Rather, the players need to sit down and discuss the reasons why they can't do what bomber is saying.

In the end, its just mental. As soon as the players can get rid of this then our culture will change. Remember Blight and Ayres got sacked and then went on to coach premiership sides. There coaching is still the same, the difference is the playing list (i mean gosh we had Ablett, Brownless etc so the quality is there)

Football is 99%, mental 1% physical. Im sticking with bomber, everyone can feel free to degrade him and delittle him all they want. But they will miss the key point that the players are mentally weak, and until that is changed then we will never be any good. and will continue to stuff our seasons up.

There are two ways of looking at it obviously. But all of the things you've mentioned could be put down to the coach not being able to do his job.

I ask the question, why have the players not improved? Why have some gone backwards? Why does our gameplan continually get exposed?

why have the players not improved?

If they aren't willing to put in the effort on and off the ground they wont improve. If they dont stay back for extra sessions etc then they wont. That being said, every player will reach a point where they wont get better. Its just that mental edge that makes then 10X better then they are.

Why have some gone backwards?
Playing above themselves? maybe they have got big heads.

Why does our gameplan continually get exposed?
If they players aren't playing to the gameplan then it will be exposed. Its not hard really. If the players dont run to the space and the ball goes out there then of course its gonna turn over. Teams may not be able to break our gameplan, maybe its just the players not being able to do it properly that lets it get exposed.

Motivation is the coaches role. We seem to lack it.

This is a mythical concept. How does one "play above" one's self? You can only play to your ability. If you play well you are able to play well.

Why aren't they playing to the gameplan? Are they not able? Do they not want to? Why? Again, it's the coaches job to coach players to do these things. Then, if they don't, it's the coaches job to sack them. Neither has happened.

Completely 100% agree. Hit the nail on the head.

What PLAN ? What STRATEGIES ? The players were all picked during Bombers reign bar 4.Isn't the coach supposed to develop the players skills? Isn't the coach supposed to develop the mental toughness and nous of the players?

Doesn't the coach oversee the physical preperation of the players? Isn't he supposed to change the loser culture that exists?
Bomber has done none of these things ,he has had 8 years enough is enough, Bye Bye!!

Sarah13 You could'nt be more correct. He is responsible for all of the above.
Time to move him on NOW !

Oh FFS turn it up

The players are clearly not responding to Thompson anymore. When you have a list that has the talent that we have then it is clearly a motivational issue that is the cause of the problems. Whilst we may not have a team to win a flag we certainly should be top 6 and obviously beating the kangaroos at home.

Get rid of Thompson and I believe that you will almost certainly see immediate improvement.

One of the advantages of doing it earlier is that you can give the players one opportunity to show something for the remainder of the year. If they don't perform they are out. It would be curious to see how Kelly, Enright, Mooney and even Scarlett would go under a new coach.

Agree, only problem is that some of those players you mentioned, don't want o be told what to do, especially Mr "Almighty Scarlett", get rid off the chip on his shoulder and some others, and things may happen....doubt it!!

at the least, AT THE VERY LEAST bomber thompson is a poor game day coach and is usually found wanting tactically. Simpson had 41 possies FFS, he is a battler but no class act, he had noone on him all day and in Bomber's press conference he was unsure who his opponent was.

To me Scarlett's attitude is representative of the cancer that has pervaded this group. If Scarlett fires up as he did against Carlton then more often than not we win. If Scarlett decides that he cannot be bothered then we almost always lose. He is the stereotypical barometer of our team's performance.

What really pisses me off his his arrogance. To think that the guy is probably on $500,000 plus and decides to play only when he wants to is outrageous. If he won't play for the jumper then he should at least be professional enough to try and vindicate his enormous salary.

Maybe he would also respond to another coach?

He will never respond to another coach that gives it back to him, whatever Creswell did, Scarlo didn't want him back, why? because Scarlo dictate's to the club. He's not the only one, I'm sure there will be other's...We need a Coach, a Board of Directors and Aministrators that support each other.
THE PLAYER'S DON'T WAG THE TAIL....THE BOARD AND THE CLUB WAG THE PLAYER'S OR ELSE START WALKING...

I agree.. Thompson himself is to blame I feel. Far too soft with the group. I'd like to see the likes of Scarlett talk back to a Leigh Mathews.. :D

I love Scarlett probably more than any other Geelong player, but the solution to this problem is simple. Thompson sits him down, says something like "you're a great player, and we need you out there for 22 weeks, but I run this team, not you. If you don't like it, the door's over there and the cheque will be in your pocket in 1 hour."

Once again, it comes down to poor management by the coach. He is the boss. He decides who is recruited, who gets selected, and who gets axed. If the egos of senior players are inflated it's his job to keep them in line. It would appear that he can't do that either.

I pick up the paper tomorrow, read "Thompson sacked". After I regain consciousness Renegade and I are seen dancing through the streets burning effigies of Thompson.

Then Sanderson is appointed caretaker coach. He drops King and Ling for this week and promotes Steve Johnson and Tenace. The next week he drops Joel Corey and Corey Enright. He makes it clear their disposal is not adequate for professionals and has to be improved. Tim Callan is rewarded for guts and Djerrkura is promoted to get a taste of the big time.

Finally, nothing against him, but Harley is relieved of the captaincy due to injury concerns and Paul Chapman is named sole captain.

At this point I wake up........

Not really. All he can do is say what he can. Its then up to the players to motivate themselves more. Not everyone can be motivated by one man. Its not possible

This is a mythical concept. How does one "play above" one's self? You can only play to your ability. If you play well you are able to play well.

Charlie Gardiner kicks 10 goals. Are you saying that this is his ability? It is possible and has happened that players spend a season playing better then what they are capable of. Whether it comes from lack of respect from opponents or whatever. Collingwood done it 2 years in a row.

Why aren't they playing to the gameplan? Are they not able? Do they not want to? Why? Again, it's the coaches job to coach players to do these things. Then, if they don't, it's the coaches job to sack them. Neither has happened.

Maybe they aren't able to put it into practice, How can the coach control what a player does?

Spot on.

Honestly, if Thompson did that and Scarlett walked out the door, I would applaud. I think Matty Scarlett's a great player and would love to see him be part of a Cats premiership team, but if he's doesn't recognise the authority of the coach and the primacy of the club then he can f@#*& off quick smart. I don't care how good he is.

Scarlett has always been an individual, showing disregard at times.

A few instances from last year spring to mind.
