Megan Spencer Hate Thread

Im just curious. Am i the only person on BigFooty who finds Megan Spencer (JJJ and SBS movie show film critic) one of the most irritating people on Australian televison and radio?.

Tell me im not.

Ive had enough of her oh so pretentious film reviews, ive had enough of those warts on her chin; and like the audience of that SBS 'Insight' show on the Australian film industry that saw her almost lynched, ive had enough of her using expressions like 'the holy temple of cinema'. She truly is truly a walking, talking testament to the idea that one can indeed have to much education. Its bad enough to see the sort of pretentious drivel are industry is churning out at the minute without having to have people like Megan Spencer (and Marc Fennell isnt much better) be told how 'intellectually and philosophically meaningful' it all is.

The final straw was when she decided that Lord of The Rings was offensive and demeaning because the eye of Sauran (sorry if that's wrong - it's been a while since I saw it) looked like a women's "private area".

She was "nearly lynched" on Insight for suggesting cinema could be more than a simply-plotted meal ticket for a bunch of close-minded film executives. What is wrong with this country?? Anyone who defends artistic seriousness or high-art is painted as an irredeemable snob. So what if she doesn't give a lazy "thumbs up" to every big-budget film - aren't there a billion other hacks who can do that? And aren't "reviews" of films like Dukes of Hazzard kind of beside the point - Hollywood marketing utterly overwhelms the critical voice and intelligent analysis.

As for her warts? Well UNIT, one can only assume you're a deeply attractive man who will soon be posting a photograph of yourself as an avatar.

Yes, yes I made it all up...

As I said from what I heard of her reviews on Triple J - any mainstream movie was never given a favourable rating - as I also said, I often agreed with her (having never bothered to even see films like Titanic, Jurassic Park etc) but it doesn't mean you have to dislike every single film of it's type.

If she liked Dukes of Hazzard, she's clearly had a brain transplant since.

Her writing style is very undergraduate but she is a guru compared to my pet hate Helen Razer!

What happened to Peter Castaldi he was fantastic

Im sure he would be alright to have a few beers with, but at times, he does appear to be one of the biggest ****************s in you could ever see on television. I remember seeing his review of that Gus Van Sant piece of tripe 'Last Days' which was a 'fictionalized look at what Kurt Cobains last days might of been like', whatever that means. Dead set i thought the bloke was gonna trash the studio he got that fired up about the 'shameful' way it had portrayed such an artist as Kurt. 'How dare they suggest Kurt spent his last days nodding off on smack' he ranted....

yes, her review of LoTR did bug me too. And many films she claims to be "outstanding" were, in fact, crap.

But the Eye of Sauron does indeed look like The All-Seeing Flaming Vagina

The ABC said to Pete that they thought it would be good if he passed on a bit of what he knew to Megan Spencer over a couple of years, on the principle that developing female movie critics was important. He agreed and shortly afterwards they sacked him to give her his job.

Pathetic move by the ABC. Costaldi was great, Spencer is ********ful.

Jay Katz is the man. He has an impressive collection of original print movies and b grade classic cult films he used to show in Sydney. He also used to have these weekly gigs that were like travelling in some time capsual. Has an impressive collection of old movie posters too.

I don't know about these days though but this was over 10 years ago. Good man too.

Jay Katz is the man. He has an impressive collection of original print movies and b grade classic cult films he used to show in Sydney. He also used to have these weekly gigs that were like travelling in some time capsual. Has an impressive collection of old movie posters too.

I don't know about these days though but this was over 10 years ago. Good man too.

He still runs The Mu-Meson archives at the Annandale - he's a big film buff.

I went to one of his nye gigs and was one of the best parties i have ever been too. He had chicks in cages a quirky jap chick just standing there on stage doing nothing and the music was very twang inspired. Runs the lillypad at the BDO.
