I am wanting a tip as to who is going to win the Melbourne Cup this year. The best I have done is 2nd place with Shivas Revenge a long way back.

I have $50 to spend and would really appreciate some 'inside' knowledge from people in the know.

I am a 'once a year punter' and would appreciate any advice as to betting properly for a change because I stink when it comes to the GG's.

Well the two favourites are Makybe Diva and Vinnie Roe. Especially after this rain we've had, they both handle the slow going quite well. Apparently VR loves it wet and sloppy so he's tumbling in as we speak, but MD will start favourite. Her run in the Caulfield CUp was outstanding. From barrier 20 (inside barriers are usually better) and travelled three wide all the way (which is bad as well). If the CC was 2401 metres, she would have beaten Elvestroem.

Alot of people are liking Pacific Dancer who won the Geelong Cup. Media Puzzle won the GC in 2002 and went on to win the Melb Cup.

As with the English horses, I don't know how to take them. It's hard to assess their form because we don't see the races. But I might chuck them into the trifectas.

Grey Song loves it wet too...if it's slow I'll have something lazy on it for a place.

I could also write a massive paragraph about which horses won't even get near it but I can't be bothered.
 
In recent years the Melbourne Cup has been one of my better races. Back the class horse in the race, only horses with proven winning and WFA form have a chance. Horses who have had there chance in previous years and not won can be dismissed. Of the locals go Elvstroem and Makybe Diva, of the interantionals Distinction and Media Puzzle.

Not so great odds anymore after we've had this rain.. At $17 now with Colin Tidy and Sportsbet, so they're pretty much covering themselves in case their is more wet weather come tuesday

I've learnt never to put money on grey song for a win but always for a place in these races, like the caulfield cup

Won't get the distance. Of the Metropolitian form I like Another Warrior the best. Its MV cup win still allows it a good pull in the weights relative to the more fancied stuff. Currently $44.00 on SuperTab. It's my roughie with Makybe Diva a bit short at 3.30 at this stage. On the way she won last year and her Caulfield Cup showing this year she should win.
 
I'll go $10 each on Makybe Diva and Vinnie Roe, with those two as the 1st placegetters in my trifecta, with Elvstroem, Hug's Dancer, She's Archie (only out of loyalty to C.Brown), Pacific Dancer, Grey Song and Another Warrior for a bit of value.
