Just wondering why you have such a low membership count? Is that all you have fan wise or do the fans just don't buy memberships when the team is struggling?

I was just wondering whether your LOW brain cell count only relates to you or do all of your family have the same problem ????????

You're not Charles Barkley.

Just a wanna-be who looks like him.

You shouldn't even be here! Be gone!

Wanna-be! Be gone!

I think it was too....
Going by some of the comments by the OP in some other threads (which I read after this thread lol) Super might be right but it could have been worded a tad better.

I actually think this was an ill-advised attempt at asking a serious question.

Or do I have too much faith in humanity?

If thats the case he needs to get an idea were we are at rather than assume we have a crap membership tally.

If he just took a look at the membership tally thread just below this he would have seen we are about 3-4,000 up on this time last year which in fact was a record year with over 30,000 members. Membership wise we are a better spot than we have ever been.

That would have saved him making this thread.

Looks like we are getting more attention from opposition posters
lately, which is very satisfying indeed, we havent even unveiled
most of our 2008 picks and our 2009s should be rippers and sides
are already fearing us before these kids get on the park, amazing.

As for our membership, it seems to be ticking along perfectly.

Over the next 2 years, fans will notice we are the most exciting
side in the competition and they will jump aboard, we are definately
on the way up.

On the off chance that you are asking a serious question, I give an answer. There are a few reasons why Melbournes membership tally has been slightly lower than the other big Melbourne based clubs in recent years.

I think the main reason is that the Melbourne Football club has historically been linked with the Melbourne Cricket Club. As owners of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, members of the cricket club receive free entry and priority seating to all football games. The cost of each has been prohibitive towards people taking up both memberships. So as the main carrot for a football club membership is the discounted entry to games, many Melbourne supporters purchase only an MCC membership and are therefore not counted at MFC members.

The fact remains that we have pulled lower attendances than other Melbourne clubs in recent years, and I put this down simply to having a dry spell of success.

Melbourne Football club has previously been highly successful and had the dominant supporter base throughout the early years of VFL football and also the 50's and 60's. I think with recent re-connections to the MCC and hopefully a few upcoming premierships, we'll be back up with the Essendons, Hawthorns and Carltons for Membership numbers pretty soon..

Thank you. Thats all I wanted to know.

Lack of base, and historical MCC connection don't help but if you go back and look at attendance stats for any era other than the 50's when we were kings, our attendances have never been near the top of the league.

Wasnt sure how to mention this in my previous post, but Ill just say it.

Our supporter bases upper/middle class demographic is less likely to get to football games on a weekly basis as our historical links with the Cricket Club and Private Colleges means their are other commitments on weekends for many families and adults.

I think we lose up to a few thousand each game to supporters who would prefer to watch it on sky TV at home, than be out in the cold sitting behind the goals. They might be more likely to attend when invited to corporate seating or have arranged an MCC group luncheon etc.

I always note that we are well supported in big finals games and bigger fixtures when the team is travelling well.
