I was wondering if anyone had picked up on the fine print in the 2007 members guide regarding change of policy with transfer of membership.

I made a few calls to the GFC and AFL and reckon they're all confused as much as I am - the facts as follows.

> Membership with GFC has always stated fully transferrable between adult to adult / child to child etc etc.
>Invitation to renew membership for 2007 which came out last year mentioned nothing about policy change.
>It's only once you've paid and receive your tickets / and the new 2007 members guide that the fine print says they are non transferrable for this year (very unprofessional and a slight of hand)

>I called the club on 2 occasions and spoke to membership dept who advised "we propably won't police it and you'll be ok to transfer as usual". I said this was not really good enough as there was no guarantee - if they're not going to police it you may as well scrap the policy.
>GFC said it was a new AFL policy - I called AFL and was advised it's entirely up the clubs wether they make it a policy and wether they monitor it. Was also advised that at least 3 other Melbourne based clubs maintain policy of full transferabillity of membership.
>AFL said take it up to the club - club said take it up with AFL >> all in all a very unpreofessional response.

Has anyone else picked up on this and if so what do you think.

I left 2 messages for the membership manager (who was leaving the job on Friday) and not surprisingly have'nt received a call back.

I think the club is leaving itself open and is taking money with a slight of hand on what is a fairly significant change to membership and seat allocation from previous years.

Thoughts ??

Why would I want to transfer my membership anyway. If you feel like transferring your membership, leave now. You are a shallow supporter and we don't want you. Have a nice day. :)

surely this would only really be a problem if there is a waiting list to become a member. You can always just keep the tickets in your name and have someone else use and pay for them anyway.

A tad hasty.
I know of at least one member, who lives interstate, who offers his membership to a local fan who is unable to afford to purchase his own.

Grow up are my thoughts.

AFL memebrship has been non transferable for years. It is AFL policy and having dealt on a business level with thema nd ehir Membership dept (MCC as well) none of them are transferable. Club membership (I thought) was non transferable anyway)

Im glad you have the time to read all that crap in the mail.

Do you really expect the Nuff Nuffs on the Gates at Geelong will ever check the membership credentilas, they are lucky if they can work the remote scanners....

Just palm it off like everyone else does, if you are a tightares and share a membership you should be shot anyway.

Mountain out of a mole hill board :p

Meh. I got back from overseas today, and got a Home 11 membership when I paid for a Home & Away 17 one.

Pain in the butt.

You're full of ******** on this issue; there's no such AFL policy - you're possibly thinking of AFL Membership itself, which has never been transferable.

This is the club having no idea of members' concerns.

Ah, they did something like this with my mums membership a couple of years ago. To cut a long story short I sent em off a not very nice email and within a couple of days it was sorted. :thumbsu:

ps. Prodigal Son, forget about tansfering memberships. If you get sick of the whole footy thing do what any respected Richmond member would do and rip/cut it up. :D

I think you and most of the others have missed the point of my post.

Simply trying to point out that something which you used to be able to do is no longer an option - IF THAT'S WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO !!!!!!

Deepest apologies to everyone for trying to bring something to peoples attention. I thought the purpose of a forum was to discuss issues and exchange relevant information. I honestly thought it was relevant enough to bring to peoples attention - clearly I was wrong and I crawl back under my rock.

For everyones information - I've got a family membership which another family member can't use for Saturday games and therefore being able to allocate to another family member is great because it means there are'nt empty seats in the ground - are you people missing the point.

The groups that sit around me in the Hickey Stand do exactly the same thing - along with at least a dozen other people I know who alternate their seats amongst young family members or friends.

Well I'll be buggered !!!

Someone actually understands my point. it's not life or death people > just a point of difference which might impact on some people. Just because it does'nt effect some people directly on this forum don't fire off and dismiss another persons opinion.

In the case of the above person from interstate - the club receives the membership fee up front as revenue early in the season/ If the person does'nt attend all games then what is the problem in making the ticket / and or reserved seat available to family or friends ???

Read the GFC member info from the previous few years - it clearly promotes the tranference of a membership or reserved seat as a benefit of club membership - if it was such a bad thing for the club do you think they'd be promoting it ??

As for your comment re AFL : read my post again. I did'nt refer to AFL OR MCC Membership. I was referring to the AFL as the governing body who develop policy and procedure for how the clubs should operate.

As for being a tightarse and sharing memberships - I think you're a bit off the mark. Call the club and ask them to list the benefits of family membership and you might be surprised / I'll leave it at that.

Thanks for your thoughts - but please pull your head in re tightarse comments.

Is'nt that what transferring your membership is ??

Read my post - I did'nt think it was that confusing. I'm not talking about giving my membership away - I'm referring to a change in policy that would'nt allow someone to use my reserved seat if I was unable to attend.

Ok Ok - I'll grow up. But can you stop using English as your second language. Does your computer have spell check. I'm no brain surgeon but your spelling is a tad on the remedial side.

Enough of the barbs - let's all just move on and I agree not to ask a question ever again.

Seems we have a hell of alot of moderators on this site that decide what people should and should'nt discuss. God help anyone else out there that offers an opinion.

Thanks for bringing this to attention, Prodigal Sons. Like you, I like to read the fine print and find unpublicised changes somewhat underhand, even if they're not deliberately so. I am a passionate member who has allowed my membership to be used by fellow Geelong members that have exhausted their country memberships if I am unable to make it to a game. I think this is a sound practice - after all, it's better to have someone there than an empty seat.

I don't understand the hostility of the responses to this post - I'm not a shallow supporter, I'm a deeply proud one; I don't feel I renounce my right to call myself a member simply by allowing someone else to utilise the benefit of a ticket I've paid for in the event that I can't.

Im with PS on this one, being able to transfer your membership is a great thing to be able to do.

I have a seat in the brownlow stand which alas, with membership costs me 350 bucks for the season. Given I have to work some weekends it is great if I am able to give it to other people to use when I cannot. Has earnt me many brownie points with the missus Dad ;)

I upgraded it to Adult this season, which is a relief. However when you have payed good money for the seat you should be able to let whoever you want use it so long as they are equal or below who it is entitled for (i.e cannot have adults sitting in concession seats)

i work weekends so rarely go to the footy unfortunately, but still buy the adult 17 every year.
I would hope i can still give it to my friends to enjoy watching the gfc if i cant irrespective of whos name is on it, otherwise i may have to chip down if i cant transfer it.
Hopefully its not policed beacuse i support the club financially even though i never attend and would like to see others enjoy it if i cant.

Ahh ok. I thought you were referring to when you dont want to carry on your membership but you have friends etc who want to take over your seats/membership rather than them being allocated tickets etc by the club (or for some clubs going on a waiting list)

If you just want someone else to use your tickets for some games I doubt the club would have any way of knowing about it anyway. I know the adelaide crows run tv ads to say if you cant get to a game give your tickets to a friend so would be petty for geelong to start taking action against their own supporters.

I liked the transferrable policy rule. I've been able to attend other team's matches from this, and vice versa when I couldn't use my membership to attend a game.

When they say they won't police it....sounds like they're setting you up to try & lend ur membership, have them caught out and make them buy tickets to a game they probably wouldn't have gone to!

I got my membership package last night and was reading everything that you mentioned above.

I'm outraged!!!! I am going to call the Victoria Police this afternoon, A Current Affair this evening tomorrow morning and employ a private investigator without delay.

CRAZY! CRAZY! CRAZY!!!!!
