Who could forget this bloke.

"Unfortunately this one incident is all I am remembered for. I was certainly feeling the worst for wear and always would take a kick, I was actually pretty accurate within 30 meters (1990 - I kicked 33.12) It certainly was not a set play, something people jumped onto because of intimation by the then commentators."

Love to hear your thoughts for those who remember him.

I for one loved him. Obviously he had one of the weirdest kicking styles the world has ever seen, but it was effective (sometimes).

He was always the scapegoat of supporters, or from what i can remember going to the games.

When he was traded to Fitzroy (im told it was because Monky was getting so good) my dad said no matter what people think of Charlie, he was one of the 20 players that can say they won a premiership for Collingwood in the AFL.

Surprisingly he actually ended up playing over 100 games for the pies.

As most of you know I love to remember the history of the club, because good or bad, it's these players who have molded what we have become.

I never really saw James Manson play live for the Pies (I was born in 1988, and have only seen the 1990 GF on video), and don't remember much of his time at Fitzroy (I was still young), but from what I have seen, that kicking style was truly unique :p I think only Paul Northeast (Port Adelaide Magpies Premiership player) can rival that for uncoordination.

I know we had a good team overall in 1990, but I still think we were fortunate that we manufactured enough goals (through Daicos, Brown, Barwick, Crosisca and Manson) that year (without a genune reliable key forward) and the team collectively played out of their skin, and other gun goalkickers (Dunstall, Lockett, Ablett etc) and other good sides (Hawthorn, Geelong, Carlton) had 'down' years.

I loved this team - Manson, Francis, Shaw, McKeowen, Monkhurst, Crosisca, Daicos (how bout that goal), Wright, Millane, Doug Barwick... The list goes on. I think the team I grew up on is always going to be my favourite team. Until we win another premiership!!

I remember that game, fond memories. I still have the video somewhere. Great game! 92 was our year. :(

Manson was famous for his weird kicking, but surprisingly still kicked it straighter than Travis Cloke.

Manson was an alright playyer I thought at the time. As will always be mentioned his kicking style will be the first thing remembered about him and then the Ronny kicking the goal on the boundary line after Manson "was hurt". He had it all over McKee Fanning & Richards thats for sure.

The good thing about Manson he gave his all. You never questioned him for not having a crack. If only Fraser had what he had.

We did have a gun forward. Daicos kicked a tick short of 100 in probably the greatest performance in a season by a small forward.

Good sides have down years all the time, but it's performance in September that matters. When it counted, it was us and the Dons, and we were more than able to destroy them. Carlton and Geelong were never a chance that year, and though Hawthorn smashed us at Waverley, I also remember an amazing 3rd quarter where we tore them apart (yes Gayfer gave the game away late, but I saw a premiership in our team's ability to respond to real pressure). Watch Road to Victory and Graham Wright's third term. He blitzed.

As regards Charlie, I loved his raw intensity. A good version of Renouf from Hawthorn - someone who lifts the team because he is just a maniac at the ball. Manson had that ability to get forward, and his one-two with Monkhorst - passion and skill - was a great facet to the Collingwood early 90s success.

I was actually thinking last night we haven't had someone prominent wearing no 28 since Crossy and remembered a time in 1990 Manson took a mark near the boundary line. He handpassed it to Crosisca on an even acuter angle, who slotted it through! He really avoided shots that weren't dead in front. Always threw his body in though, what he lacked in kicking style he made up in heart!

Best part of that goal was the reaction of the Geelong fans. They went absolutely ape. :D Charlie's good work was slightly undone when he chose Bewsy to rub it in to and ended up being put on his a*** by the smallest bloke on the field. Just needed the Benny Hill music.
From memory we came from about 4 goals down and won easily with Daic's starring. As usual it was a cold miserable day at Waverley but Charlie made the hour stuck in the car park worth it.
Another fond memory of Charlie was watching him charge around the boundary line during the Grand Final - warming up underneath the coaches box. Poor Charlie must have been buggered cos Lethal was happy to run with Monky for most of the day but it wasn't for Charlie's lack of trying to send Lethal the message that he was ready to go.

My fav Charlie moment was his goal from the boundary in the drawn final against Wet Toast in 1990. Rowdy was all alone in the square for easily 20 secs, but he decided he was having a shot from the boundary! He duly slotted it! Legend.

He was playing up an injury before that which caused him to "miss" rowdy in the square

Was talking about killer to my old man today, so many funny stories

Went out with a girl who was a Collingwood supporter in 1990 so saw alot of you guys that year.

Manson had that bony body that was still strong and Shaw used to think he could hurt someone out on a football field more than anyone.

I envied your forward line back then and we couldnt figure out why Matthews bothered bringing back BT against the West Coast in that draw when you had other more mobile options with Manson and Ronny McKewon along with Brown.

The next week proved that right (Manson looked great that day) and was the end of BT.
