Hello Crows fans and welcome to another edition of Memory Lane, the threads that allow us to cast our minds backwards to the games of yesteryear that have thrilled, chilled and chagrinned us over the journey. Kangaroos fans are more than welcome to contribute too.

Who'd a thunk it? Us playing our two grand final victims back to back. In chronological order! From an AFL draw point of view, this was a dream marketing opportunity for Memory Lane Pty Ltd and was a key part of our AFL fixture requests. Props to them for making it happen :thumbsu:

Adelaide vs North Melbourne... so many great memories. 1998 Grand Final the biggie. We'd barely beaten them for seasons before that and were underdogs going into the game. The first quarter was an absolute CRACKER. Electric stuff. They looked ominous early and settled better, Carey kicked a ridiculous soccer goal off the outside of the boot. Ben Hart kept us in it with some exceptional one-on-one defensive wins. Jarman then kicked an amazing left foot snap goal from the pocket, probably my favourite Crows goal of all time. Jarman also had a MASSIVE collision with Byron Pickett and smashed him. Pickett has said since that whilst he dished out a number of big hits in his time, this one from Jarman was the one that floored him the most in his whole career. He was concussed and only managed 10 possessions for the game.

The second quarter things spiralled out of control. The Kangas dominated possession and ran rings around us. Stevens, Bell, Harvey were picking up possessions at will. Smart got pole-axed by David King and still has neck problems to this day from the impact. Luckily the Roos managed only 2.11 for the quarter with Blakey and Bell in particular missing a couple of absolute sodas. We managed just one goal for the quarter. Pop quiz... who kicked it? Answer>>>David Pittman. 24 points down at half time but it felt like we were gone.

Things started to turn in the third. Kane Johnson started to get involved, as did Andrew McLeod. Even Robran got a touch. Tim Watson: "It's as though the teams have changed jumpers." Goal to Johnson, a checkside from Smart, one over the back to Vardy... then Jarman with some nice candy on Byron Pickett in the goal square. North Melbourne kicked one on the siren from Brett Allison to keep the margin at 2 points and a cracking last quarter brewed.

However the Roos were shot by this stage. They had thrown their best at us, hadn't put it on the scoreboard and had little left. In the first minute Andrew McLeod swooped, took the ball one handed, threaded a handball through traffic to James Thiessen who goaled. The writing was on the wall. The rest of the quarter was party central. Jarman giving it to Glenn Archer, roaring in celebration when marking in front of him. Smart conjuring a leg break goal that Warnie would be proud of. McLeod Norm Smith.

Two in a row baby! Can't believe it's been 14 years...

Other memories...

Modra kicks 10 goals in a cracking 10 point win over the Roos at Football Park in 1993. Takes mark of the century in the process.

Can't remember what year this was but Mods took two screamers in the same game over Mick Martyn. One of them he played on and snapped the ball from a metre out. It went way up in the air and blew across, hitting the post on the way down. Mods was adamant that it had crossed the line and then gone backwards, but I reckon if you hit the post from a metre out you don't deserve the goal :p

Talk about awkward. Never seen a soap opera break out on the football field before.

Also in 1998 the Shaun Rehn holding the ball game. John Harvey pays 7 holding the balls against us in the last quarter including one on Rehn when he ducked his head. We were 2 points up, they kicked the goal and we lost by four. I know we lost but it was an awesome game. Jarman was at his classy best with 4 goals despite a John Blakey tag. Chad Rintoul on fire and kicked a cracking goal from 60. Rehn had 40 hit outs, 26 touches and 8 marks but finished the game with his head in his hands, crushed.

Over to you...

As I remember it Rehn had a massive game that day as well. Pretty close to winning it off his own back. That free was heartbreaking to watch.

Other than the obvious 1998 GF win, my favorite memory would definitely be round 7, 1993. The Roos were undefeated over the first 6 rounds.

We were about a goal up at half time. Modra took his absolute screamer over the pack in the 3rd quarter - which won the mark of the year. Carey was playing a blinder and the Roos kicked away in the 3rd quarter to lead by 26 points at 3 qtr time.

We played a super last quarter, kicking 6 goals with a couple by Matty Robran including a huge bomb from about 60m and a couple of goals from Modra to give him 10.1 for the game.

The atmosphere was incredible and when the final siren went we led by 2 points and I reckon it was the biggest roar I have ever heard at Footy Park.

I have over 50 Crows games on DVD, and one of the most prolific opponents in that collection is North Melbourne.

Yes, of course the Grand Final. :thumbsu:

Yes that sometimes awkward, sometimes firey but very entertaining match in round 6 2003 with Carey playing his first game against the Roos. Him strolling in after playing on to advantage from a free kick and snagging the first goal of the game was a brilliant start that couldn't be scripted, and as my first live match in Melbourne, and only second overall, I have very fond memories of that night. Atmosphere was unbelievable!

And yes that magnificent game in 1993 - Modra's screamer and booting six goals to one in the last quarter to run out two point winners!

But a couple of other corkers - round 20, 2001. Kicking 6 goals, 8, 4, and 7 in each of the quarters to beat the Roos by 62 points on a friday night under the roof. McLeod had 35 touches and was one of the best on ground, but couldn't muster a single Brownlow vote. To this day I blame the umpires from this game for him being robbed of the '01 Brownlow.

Also round 16 2006. 72 point win on a Friday night, Ricciuto in game 300 kicked 5 goals, and we were flying at 14-2 on top of the ladder and flag favourites. What happened the next week and for the remainder of the year make this one slightly disappointing though.

1998 had a couple of other crackers apart from the GF, though both were losses. 13 points at Footy Park in round 21, but particularly the 4 point loss at the G in round 6. I remeber there being a contentious umpiring decision towards the end but to be honest, I can't remember what happened!

Rehn was tackled in the pocket in the last minute of the game. Cant remember by who. Ball went over the boundary but was still called HtB.

Remember being absolutely ropable after this game. It had been a cracker of a game and we were three goals up at three quarter time and went goalless in the last quarter. Every time we went near it Harvey would pull out a free kick. When he pinged Rehn for HTB deep in the pocket, it took all my will power to not absolutely destroy my TV.

Remember reading somewhere that Harvey got dropped after his final quarter umpiring performance.

The tackle was laid by Paul Evans. He passed off to Peter Bell who kicked the winning goal for North with less than a minute left.

Evan Hewitt I reckon

Also come to think of it there's been a fair few blokes over the years who have pulled on both jumpers.

McCartney (as mentioned above), Evan Hewitt, Chris Groom, Scott Welsh, Mark Stevens. I imagine I've missed a few.

Seems like we enjoy exchanging mediocre to decent key forwards with them.

Goodbye Wayne Schimmelbusch and hello Dennis Pagan era.

That preseason game where we gave them a thumping of over 150 points and Schimma was sacked the day after. I think it was 1993.

who could forget that classic game in 2004, where both sides kicked 2 goals upto 3/4 time - in perfect conditions

Oh god I remember that. Most objectively awful game I've ever seen.
easily the worst game seen in the modern era - was just horrible to watch

was also the first time we were held goalless in a half

Wasn't it as foggy as **** but?

like, you couldn't see the other end of the ground. No rain or wind but it was freezing and foggy?

Apart from the 1998 GF, this was the game I thought about immediately. Here are the stats:

http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/games/2004/011220040730.html

Looked at this and saw Hayden Skipworth got 3 Brownlow votes... Turns out that Skipworth got all 6 of his career Brownlow votes in the only 2 games he played for the Crows v North Melbourne. The North Melbourne version of the CCC must surely be called the Hayden Skipworth Club.

Not foggy, but it was one of the dewiest (if that's not a word, it should be) nights I can remember at Footy Park. The commentators on the TV kept going on about the "perfect conditions", but they were nothing of the sort.

Round 20, 2001. Stevens Perrie and Ricciuto get 5 each as we win by 62 points. The game that cost McLeod a Brownlow as his 35 disposals and a goal were not enough to get a vote from the Umpires. We were great in this game though. Perrie perfected his right to left floater kick which is almost imopssible for a left footer!

1998 Granny was huge. The second quarter was poor but NM actually kicked a lot of their points from difficult shots. Never forget the look on Peter Vardy's face after the game, he was stunned to have won a flag. Train ride home was great too, until they shut the bar at 1 am.

That 2004 match was the week after Brisbane smashed the crows by 100+ points. We went in with an unchanged line up as Neil thought the 22 had something to prove to themselves and their supporters. It is one of this clubs greatest victories IMHO. The Crows never gave up.

EDIT: 141 points, and we were the best performed side redefining modern football just a year later :O
