Said this before, but I see absolutely no resemblance between Johnson and Menzel. It's almost as if the commentators feel they have to create hype about him. Then like the lemmings they are, the rest jump on board.

Menzel is a stronger mark than Johnson, and a longer kick. The one thing they do share is goal sense, but aside from that I can't see many similarities.

He's himself. Very happy about it too.

I think Menzel is a bit of a SJ fan and I do see him doing a bit of SJ stuff from time to time. Menzel will be a gun. But he has a way to go. Check out the 2007 Prelim highlights.

Other thing is, I see Menzel and SJ as similar type threats to opposition teams. Which is great, because they can't keep the both of them down.

Slightly off topic. Can anyone tell me better rising stars that Christenson, Duncan, and Menzel this year?

Is it Heppel, but because he plays alongside lesser stars. Would Heppel's star shine so bright if he had to play alongside the Coreys, Bartel, and Kelly every week? :p

Hard to say. Would Menzel, Duncan and Bundy be playing as well without those stars around them or without the luxury of being rested occasionally?

Denzel proves time and time again he is a born forward. If he gets moved down back again I will go postal!
CS and the Coaching staff need to take a huge bow here - Bundy , Duncan and Menzel have all played roles in their "non preferred" positions and developed as a result.
I am sure Menzel and Duncan will be given a lot of time forward in the Finals as they are both superb finishers around goal and have a lethal combination of pace , balance and marking ability. Bundy is a ball magnet who knows where the goals are and is surely in our best 22 , if not best 21. In my best side these 3 are a lock with only one of Stokes or Bynes in the side.
I really like the look of having Varcoe and Wojo behind the ball with a license to run and feeding the likes of Pods, Hawkins forward with Bundy, SJ, Chappy, Duncan, Menzel and Stokes rotating through F50.

BTW. I'm right about Chapman. (well... not about not playing a final because he was massive) but there is something wrong there. I have no idea what type of injury comes good after warming up. I am sure you can help out there due to your running knowledge.

When hasn't Chapman been carrying an injury? He's been struggling for years with niggling injuries.

Everyone knows that.

Yes and no, I suppose. Their quality would bring the younger players up. But the senior guys are the go-to-players mostly.

I think all the younger players have been rested a bit. But Heppel has played most of them I think.

I think our lads are under-rated. These boys have played very well against the gun teams.

I see a lot of the same cocksure confidence in Menzel that Johnson has had virtually trademarked to him over the last few years. He is a stronger frame than Johnson, and given a few preseasons could be a real beast of a mid-sized forward with an ability to play tall.

Better than SJ

Still don't understand the comparisons. He's got a much better leap, better hands and high marking, better one-out marking. I don't think he's got as many tricks as SJ, but he's a better straight kick from distance

I've said it before and I'll say it again - he's more like Bizzell, Lindner or even..... a young GA sr

Check out the main board . Menzel features there too. Many non Cat fans mention THE comparison. I see it, you don't, I respect your view. BUT, the pigeon toed running action, and moreover, that snapping across body kick which they both do. Not good for the hip joint either. I see a bit of Bizzell, a bit of Mackie even . We agree that we see a fine player that is a keeper.

I see the similarities between Menzel and SJ in their goal-kicking ability, but one area that Menzel definitely has Johnson covered is in his overhead marking, he's excellent at the strong, contested mark.

Menzel hasn't quite got the situational awareness that Johnson has, but he does already seem to have a very good footy brain, and I think he'll be one of our key forwards for many years.

Spot on. His running style, kicking style, goal sense, and just the general way he moves definitely all have a tinge of Johnno!

Frankly, I don't understand how people couldn't see a similarity!

i expected that, the 07 GF is the only game i can think of where hes stepped up on the big stage and dropped all his fancy shit and played the basics. Apart from that he frustrates the hell out of me in big games, i tend to think stevie is a bit of a downhill skier, dont get me wrong i still love the man but yeah; i guess not as much as others.
anyways this is about dan "the difference maker" menzel, futures so bright i gotta wear shades, and hes already my favorite player :)

It is bloody hard to be an opportunist forward under the defensive pressure of finals.

Yes. And look at last year's prelim. In the 2nd and 3rd quarters when he was put in the midfield, SJ busted a gut pushing the ball forward (with little help) while a few of our midfield stars were either going backwards, or not getting a touch.

SJ does not get credit for his one percenters, only gets slammed when his show pony stuff falls flat (fair enough). But there are two sides.

Gigantic difference between suggesting there is a "tinge of Johnno" in him and suggesting he will be as good as SJ. Gigantic difference. Long way to go before he gets near SJ who cops the treatment week-in-week-out from the opposition something Menzel is yet to encounter.

Menzel is very good mover who at this early stage looks like he'll be a player. Let's not get carried away at this early point of his career or put him under unnecessary pressure.

SJ's gutsy kick to Ablett in the middle in '09 GF for the "toe-poke". Not many players would have the courage, skill or imagination to take that risk.

That was a terrible kick though and woud have ended in disaster, if not for Scarlett being amazing

Spot on. I'm not suggesting that he'll be as good as SJ, and I'm not suggesting he won't. He could be ANYTHING, and I can't wait to enjoy the ride!

But it was a clanger though, lucky it didn't cost us the game.
