I saw it differently, but I appreciate your thoughtful and detailed reply.
I've said my piece, so I won't comment on the incident, but well done to all who are posting on this thread. Absence of malice directed at others who hold a different view is great. Playing the issue and not the poster makes for a much better Brisbane Board, even when people express their views with passion. In particular, hats off to karix and knaf for their posting.

If you want reckless, high, high and you add on the carryover from his hit on Swallow (I don't think he has been done since?) then he will get 3 weeks after the plea if I have done my sums right.

Though I am working off old guidelines so I could easily be wrong.

I reckon FlatWhite1Sugar is probably on the money: two with early plea.
LOL, I have such a stupid username. :drunk:

I've just been thinking about it a little more. He accepted two weeks earlier this year, which given he took the early plea he got a 25% discount on the demerit points that offense was determined to be, along with his previous carry over demerit points - so that should have reduced to 278.67, meaning he still has 78.67 carryover to this incident.

So how do they figure these points out?

Based on just watching the incident alone (and this website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFL_Tribunal ), I'm guessing they'll say it was:
- Head high contact (2 points)
- Intentional (3 points, though I would like to see this be 'Reckless' and 2 points considering he was trying to affect a spoil, not just deck someone off play)
- Medium impact (2 points) or even possibly High (3 points)

And then there's the medical review from the other team which will probably be against him.

But given those categories I've just mentioned I can see it be between 4 and 6 points, which is a class 1 or 2 offence. God knows how they turn that into demerit points and then weeks though.

edit: Oh.

A player with prior suspensions over the past two years is subject to an additional penalty known as loading. For each week in excess of two that a player has been suspended over the past two years, he receives an additional penalty of 10% of the current offence's original base score <snip>

Can't really predict the MRP but it won't be intentional - that means he meant to hit him high. It'd be negligent or reckless given it was in the act of spoiling - spoiling tends to be negligent, reckless tends to be a bump or tackle. Rest is probably right.

Cool, yeah I figured that intentional was generally reserved for more severe situations. So that's 2 points, maybe even 1 if they go for negligent.

I am of the opinion that he should get off, a spoil is a legitimate action and he was just a victim of circumstances.

I'm with you. Eyes on the ball and a little bit late - I stress, a little bit late - and it is part of the game. It doesn't compare with what he did to Swallow.

What frustrates me is Merrett looks like he's going to get more weeks than Conca.

His eyes were on the ball the entire time, just a little late to the contest. 50m.

The rules around striking are crap. Conca may well only get a week for a dirty dog act and Merrett could get the rest of the season off.

Cmon lads, lets get a grip. What's with all this anti-Roger sentiment? One of the greatest club man in our history and the anti-Rog attitude by a some posters here on BF is bordering on hysteria.
Appreciate Roger for what he has contributed to the club during one of our most difficult periods and value his sacrifice for the club. He is a rare individual on our list.
This one is a nothing event and a slight distraction to a bloody good finish to our season.

Crawler!

Anyway if rog gets 4 weeks for a crude attempted spoil what then would this bloke get?

I know this will not happen but I agree with you. As I said elsewhere not even an issue once upon a time.

He clipped him with his elbow, but he didnt lead with it. Fist was going after the ball and nearly made it, was just u fortunate his elbow caught him. He had intent to make body contact and make him earn the mark, but the knock to the head was accidental.

In saying that he wears the Maroon Ble and Gold so the book will probably be thrown at him.

Of course my previous comments apply to everyone except John, who is a complete arse clown. But then, we shouldn't expect much from a Manchester United supporter who lives in Brisnabne. ;)

Good stuff. Have a feeling if it was any other player on our list we would have unanimously seen it as the right decision. Confirmation bias and stuff.

I thought it looked bad live but on rewatching the footage I changed my mind. Clearly he was late but his intent was the ball. Good decision by the MRP that acknowledges that sometimes in a contact sport... shit happens.

The match day report laid against the Brisbane Lions’ Daniel Merrett for striking Melbourne’s Cam Pedersen was assessed. Melbourne’s Dom Tyson had the ball and kicked towards his teammate Pedersen. As Pedersen was preparing to mark, Merrett, who had his eyes on the ball, reached up to spoil with his left arm. Merrett made contact with the ball with his left arm in his spoiling action and also made high contact to Pedersen at the same time. It was the view of the panel that Merrett’s action was a legitimate attempt to spoil and the high contact made was deemed to be accidental as part of the spoiling motion. No further action was taken.
