Seriously what is this guy doing being a selector? Was listening to SEN yesterday when he was asked in an interview if he has Foxtel. His reply was something along the lines of "if I had Foxtel and Australia were playing in India, I'd watch FBI files on the Crime Network instead of watching the cricket." He was dead set serious. CA offered to install Foxtel in his home (The Age, 28/10/09) and he refused, "how much cricket do you want us to watch?" he says condescendingly. I don't know how much he gets paid but I'd imagine it'd be more than 50k, so take the job seriously or f.ck off Merv, there'd be millions out there who'd watch cricket all day for nothing, let alone if it was there job.

I say it's time to take a new approach and appoint an overseas Chairman. Have a Gary Kirsten or a Mike Atherton with no state allegiances, who can keep Ugly Dave Gilbert and his NSW cronies in check, and have complete control over his subordinates. Something Hilditch clearly does not...

You had me in full agreement until you did the typical Victorian thing and dragged NSW into it...

Nevertheless, I still agree with your first paragraph and the idea of a overseas Chairman is pretty interesting.

Gary Kirsten is busy though ;)

I apologise, couldn't help myself with the Dave Gilbert jibe, I hate that MoFo. The 'no state allegiances' is fair dinkum though, removes all doubt. Seriously I'm sure we could attract some good overseas candidates - throw 200k a year, house, flights, Foxtel etc. Full-time with a small panel of subordinates who answer directly to him. Someone of the Kirsten ilk/stature would be ideal...

I heard the interview. Our selectors are a joke. Merv Hughes may be Victorian but get rid of the idiot.

- Make them full-time.
- Pay them a decent wage.
- Make them watch every day of every Test in Australia.

Almost as importantly they really need to be taking more of a look at the FRC, Sheffield Shield as well to see young talent coming through, or seeing guys such as Klinger and Carseldine who may not have been good enough a couple of years ago, but have shown through weight of runs that they deserve their chance if a situaton arises.

Shouldn't have to make them, you'd think they'd do it anyway.

For mine, get rid of them all and have a combination of;

AB or Steve Waugh (Chairman)
Mark Waugh
Damien Fleming

I said it during the Ashes - Merv was a complete and utter embarassment. Going on wine tours with a travel group instead of watching Tour Matches; what the ****?! And then the way he spoke about Phil Hughes being dropped was pathetic - he was trying to put AB in his place that Hughes hadn't been dropped, without knowing that Hughes had twittered it.

You could actually see and hear the contempt and incredulity that AB/Junior & Flem held for him.

How the f*** Merv Hughes got a job as a selector in the first place I'll never know. He's as thick as pig shit and obviously isn't totally committed to the job, treating O/S tours like a piss drinking junket.

We could get away with having Merv as a selector a few years ago when the team virtually picked itself but now that some tough calls need to be made he is just way out of his depth.

I'd be happy with any one of AB, Steve/Mark Waugh and Damien Fleming as selectors. Adam Gilchrist would probably be a good choice too as he's a smart bloke and would offer a WA perspective.

You're the complete antithesis of Merv, you watch too much Foxtel! AB is a joke, who along with his bumchum Hohns formed the biggest mates club Australia has seen. Remember Scott Muller? Jimmy Maher? Wade Seccombe even went on a tour for christ's sake. As for Junior, we really would have a NSW XI playing for Australia, makes me sick listening to him when NSW are playing. Flem I don't think takes it serious enough. I take any bonmots coming out of Fox Sports with a grain of salt, it's more Sydney-centric than SBS. Brett Lee would have played 150 tests by now if it were up to Fox Sports.

I say again, get a Pom/Saffa in who knows what they're doing - no allegiances, no BS, just pick the best team...

Jimmy Maher averaged 39 in OD cricket with 16 centuries - he played 26 ODI's for Australia.

Scott Muller took 100 wickets at 23 in FC cricket. He played 2 test matches for Australia.

Wade Seccombe was a fine glovesman and was chosen as a backup keeper for an Ashes tour.

If youa re going to whinge at least save i for things that are actually worthy

Yet he only made one 50 with an average of 25 and S/R of 65. You'd think after 10 ODIs you'd realise he wasn't up to it.

Mate there's plenty of people who have good starts to their FC career, not many get fast-tracked as quick as this dud. Remember the kind of guys that he was getting a game ahead of. There's a reason he came and went so quickly.

Was never our 2nd best 'keeper I don't care what you say.

Not whinging at all, my point stands - get a Pom/Saffa in as Chairman so we can cut out all the BS we have with nepotist/clueless selectors...

Merv Hughes is a selector because CA seemed to bow to the campaign of the Herald Sun among other media outlets that Victoria must have a selector.

Merv needs to watch cricket, it's his bloody job as a selector.

He needs to compare state cricketers with the international players and make a comparison. You done even have to watch it live Merv, you can tape it.

Curtly Ambrose has stated he doesn't watch much cricket now he's retired... but he didn't put his job up for the West Indies selection gig did he.

Love Merv as a bowler and an entertainer but he shouldn't be a selector if that's his attitude.

Yeah, he couldn't bowl and he couldn't throw!

It would be a bit hard for them to watch every day of every Australian test match when they are part timers and are often out at state games being played at the same time

People whinge about Merv over in England? Was he even the selector on duty? Or was he there as a tour operator, Australia only appoint 1 selector to every game, its up to that person to make the hard calls

What a load of rubbish!

Muller was a fantastic first class bowler and did exceptionally well at the Gabba for QLD. He was picked for a Gabba test! Good idea. Around this bowlers like Cook and Nicholson also received test caps, stop gap fast bowlers come and go, we are seeing the same thing with McKay and Geeves at the moment, next year it could be Cutting or Cockley.

Maher was a standout domestic one day batsmen, he kept hammering the door down with domestic one day runs, ala in recent times D.Hussey and A.Voges.

As for Seccombe, he was an absolute gun keeper, equal to Berry and both were probably equal with the bat. Seccombe was a better bloke though!

Shane Warne is head and shoulders the best cricket brain in Australia.

Make him chairman of selectors.:thumbsu:

Forget about the Waughs, they lack the required intellect.:thumbsd:

I think Warne is actually a top idea... I dont think he'd be afraid to make the tough calls... at least Hussey would be gone already....

also... David Boon... great player...but not the smartest of blokes.. Him and Merv should just get the f**k out of the way...
