I am getting very sick of reading comments about Melbourne pillaging the draft and tanking and what not. The fact is there are 8 others clubs who have gathered equal or more top-10 picks in the last 7 drafts.

AFL DRAFTS 2004-2010

70 top-ten picks 'awarded' total

In 5 cases a pick was traded by its original recipient to another club, I have corrected this to reflect what the clubs were originally 'awarded'. The table below shows how many top ten picks each club received in a 7 year period:

Carlton:7
Gold Coast: 7
Hawthorn: 7
Richmond: 7

Essendon: 6

Freo: 5

Brisbane:4
Collingwood:4
Melbourne: 4

Adelaide:3
Dogs: 3
North: 3
Port: 3
West Coast: 3

Saints:2
Geelong:1
Sydney: 1

So in terms of what the AFL has 'gifted' them, Melbourne sits right in the middle, which is precisely what they have been in this time period, and up-and-down middle-of-the-road side. Posters need to bear this table in mind, particularly clubs like Hawthorn and Collingwood who have had more picks and won flags because of it.

Thank you.

You're including a Top 10 pick Collingwood received for trading Chris Tarrant. Fail.

Only 1 top 10 pick for Sydney and Geelong. What consistency. Same with the saints but they didn't win anything of significance during the period.

Exhaustive research and detail has gone into this post, but you've made the error of including Jordan Lewis, chosen with pick 7 in 2004. The AFL didn't award Hawthorn this draft pick. North Melbourne traded pick 10 for Nathan Thompson and Hawthorn swapped this pick with Collingwood's pick 7.

Hawthorn have only received 5 of these "Top 10" picks, not the 6 that you've claimed

In future, please try to get it right when posting THE TRUTH :o:thumbsu:

I don't see why you are upset.

Melbourne tanked twice but one year Carlton did it just a bit better. I doubt many Demon supporters would argue they didn't tank so what is the issue?

He's also included our drafting of Thorp and Dowler as an explanation of the flag we won in 2008.

Can you read???
The OP does not state that the AFL awarded the top 10 picks, rather it only stated the top 10 picks that each club had in the nominated time frame.

the issue is that 8 clubs including your own have pillaged the draft more than us in recent years so it is obviously a hypocritical comment to make

this thread really wasn't needed

i wouldn't argue we didn't tank, but i think that we only tanked in 09

08 and 07 we were just a very poor team

actually no, it's about what was awarded. If somebody traded their picks (eg Carlton 2x topten picks for Judd) then the AFL effectively handed them Judd, so those 2 picks should count in their 7, is my reasoning.

Nothing hypocritical about it at all.

We didn't tank, we have just been bad.

Are you trying to say you didn't tank?

The title is AFL Handouts....the truth

If he wants to spruik truth then he needs to get the facts right, he has already been outed twice.

Trying to Justify Blatant tanking and then rewarding the coach for getting those picks as a KPI does not make it the TRUTH>

Franklin, Roughead, Dowler, Ellis, Thorp, pick 9 traded - that is 6. I didn't count Lewis that went to Collingwood's tally

either way makes f--k all difference to the argument, MFC is still right on average

It's also interesting how the OP only includes the Top 10 picks from the previous 7 drafts

Strange to use 7 as the magic number. Why go back to 2004?

Why not use the past 5 drafts ? Or the past 10?

Oh, I get it...

2003 National Draft

1. Adam Cooney (WB) priority pick
2. Andrew walker (Carl) priority pick
3. Colin Sylvia (Melb) priority pick
4. Farren Ray (WB)
5. Brock McLean (Melb)
6. Kepler Bradley (Ess)
7. Kane Tenace (Geel)
8. Rapahael Clarke (St K)
9. David Trotter (NM)
10. Ryley Dunn (Freo)

That would bring Melbourne's tally of Top Tenners up to six...

Bloody Melbourne.... always leeching the early draft picks...

You've got equal the most of anyone, perfect example of the blatent hypocrisy I am talking about, you have three more top ten picks than us

yeah and it brings several others up a notch or two leaving us in about the same place where we are in the order. Genius.

Why go back seven years? Why not make it an even ten years (Colin Sylvia amd Brock McClean 2003 ring any bells)? Also, including top ten picks clubs traded for is a fail, as is not including in the total top ten picks clubs traded off. I'm sure you'll find Melbourne's amount of picks would be much higher then.

how good the player has zero to do with it, you either picked the wrong blokes or didn't develop them properly that has nothing to do with what handouts you copped

Well you said we won a flag because of it?

When you're talking about a tally, surely you have to take into account that a couple of Hawthorn's 6 had absolutely no effect on us winning a flag?

Did you think this thread through before you posted?
