My thoughts on our playing list in 2006 along with possible delistings and trades.
The Very Good
McLean Neitz Bartram
McDonald Rivers Pickett
Davey Carroll Whelan
The positives (with this group) – McLean, Rivers, Bartram and Davey are all under 23 by the start of season 2007.
The negatives – Neitz, McDonald and Pickett are all towards the end of their careers.
The Good (Most of the time)
Jones Holland Bate
Yze Johnstone Green
Bruce White
The positives – Jones and Bate. Both will be exceptionally good players for the MFC over a long period of time.
The negatives – The rest should be murdering the competition at this stage of their careers. All need to take the next step and improve on 2006 to become consistently very good players. (with the exception of Dutchy, who may only have one year left)
The Good (Some of the time)
Miller (with apologies) Ward Sylvia
Dunn Johnson C Bell
Robertson (with apologies) Godfrey Wheatley
Jamar
Miller was played out of position all year and Robbo played injured all year. Both of these guys will benefit from a break and a good pre-season.
The positives – Sylvia, Dunn, Bell, Johnson and Jamar will all benefit from game time during 2006.
The negatives – Cannot expect great improvement from the rest.
The injured
Johnson P Moloney Ferguson
Positives – All positives here. A backman, a middleman and a forward/ruckman. Nice to have as rookies for season 2007.
Shouldn’t have bothered
Read Brown Motlop
Negatives – All past there used by dates. Would possibly retain Read and Brown only for back up purposes.
Didn’t play and Rookies
Buckley Bizzell Nicholson
Smith Neville Newton
Warnock Hughes Neaves
Gianfanga Bode
Don’t know much about some of these guys but would have 426, Warnock (not sure if he still qualifies under the new AFL rules that allows a player to a rookie for 3 years) and Neaves, plus others on the rookie list. Know that some of you guys have respect for Newton and the other first year players on the main list (Buckley & Neville) must remain for one more.
The Coaching Panel
Never, ever underestimate the amount of work these guys put into their coaching duties. Analysing the other sides is easy, it’s trying to analyse us that is the hard part (the two games we lost to the wooden spooners is a good case in point). Remember a coach is only as good as the cattle he has to work with. And let’s face it, what other senior coaches are available at present that are any good. We do not need or want a rookie coach at MFC next season.
Delistings
Now we need three draft picks so my delistings are Nicho, Motlop and 426 (who will be picked up on the Rookie list). If we want to keep others then Ward, Godfrey, Brown, Wheatley and Bizzell are all in the gun barrel. I know Biz has 1 more year on his contract but I don’t the others contract status.
Trade
The only player listed under delistings that would be of any interest to any other side would be Wheatley, but I can’t see us getting much in return. Certainly enter trade week with an open mind and see who is available but for me I don’t want to trade this year. Just take our 3 draft picks.
List Management
Come the end of 2007 Neitz will retire and other players who could possibly go would be Holland, Godfrey, Wheatley, Read, Brown and a couple from the Didn’t Play & Rookies category who just don’t step up.
And Neale is the man to bring that much anticipated, and long awaited, glory to what has been a starved community of Melbourne Football Club members and supporters.
I’m already looking forward to 2007, for me the glass is half full.
