I've been thinking about the playing lists incredibly fragile psyches and I think what it boils down to is that we play like victims. We are always waiting to lose. To get beaten up. For the umpires to screw us. We don't screw the prom queen. 17 other clubs come and pinch our date, bang her and then come and tell us how good it was.

We are still a soft, timid and apologetic club. We need way more Hogan and Petracca and way less Garland, Grimes, Watts, Toumpas etc.

I hope they target pricks in the draft. Nasty campaigners are what we desperately need. I'm sick of supporting a netball team masquerading as a football club.

You'd think that after a decade of mediocrity we might have at some point decided to be the hunter and not the hunted but no, we remain a prey item for the rest of the comp.

Start a brawl. Just get Hogan to absolutely flatten someone. Like the Hawks did against the Dons with the Line in the Sand game. Mock it all you want, it changed the perception and attitude of that football club.

Been saying this for years.

Roos' public approach was apologetic to begin with. I don't think that helped.

Having said that, I think we've got leaders coming up; Brayshaw goes hard, Hogan hates losing.

A proper thug like Toby Greene wouldn't hurt.

This is what I don't understand, people think it is a bad idea and should be left in the past etc. Hawthorn since that day have never been physically intimidated and have always looked to be the aggressor. Our club has never had that in my short lifetime.

You have the nutters within the club, unfortunately the coaching staff have curbed this nutter factor within and another reason players are not playing to their natural instinctive hunter ability. Handball, handball, handball, don't attack, backwards, backwards movement. In order defend, one must attack!!!!

I don't think players like Brayshaw, Brayshaw, and Hogan would be as pleased to play alongside a thug like Tony Greene as you might think.

I'm not against an all in brawl at this point why not. One of our best performances was away at Adelaide even though we lost, we played like arseholes it was great.

We were arseholes to Geelong and Collingwood too.

We need to ignore Roos public approach and note that he's bringing in young players with toughness - Brayshaw, VDB, Salem, Petracca (I know he hasn't played yet but it's his MO) as well as the likes of Viney and Hogan who came in before the Roos regime. We've had what, seven years of drafting skinny kids with upside? The football department know we're soft but can't completely change that in 18 months. Seeing the swagger Hogan has, the confidence of Petracca and Brayshaw, I think we will grow in confidence and leadership but it is the new kids that we have to lead it which unfortunately means it will take more time.

Oh how I wish we had two of Brayshaw!

I think they'd be happy playing in a successful side.
Hodge's team mates seem to like him. Same with Ballantyne.

Kent and Vandenberg have been big outs for us because they like hurting the opposition. I like Kent's swagger and arrogance. Been sorely missed in a team full of largely introverts. This is something that the skipper needs to push himself with too. I don't think it's his natural go to be aggro and intimidating but he's taken it on himself a few times this year to play like that and we've responded. Think of his attack on Pendlebury.

Why not do it against GWS? Get all the blokes about to be delisted into the 22, and basically say: no football, just biff. Even publicly. Who knows, might even get 20 people to turn up.

True, there's the added bonus of Freo going into a massive finals campaign though with players not wanting to be suspended if we wanted to be complete jerks.

if we are talking and bringing back brawlers, can someone go find Filthy Phil Read and Bryon Barrel Chest Pickett!

We definately need more Aaron Vandenberg types. Players who play with ferocity, hunt the ball and HATE being beaten in a contest, not thuggish, but y'know "if the ball is in my vicinity it's MINE". It's these half-hearted, timid efforts at competing that irritate me even more than the basic skill errors. Natural competitors who are very resilient are attributes that should be mandatory for all our draftees going forward imo.

That has been Clarkson's mantra and it's worked pretty well for the hawks.

All these pussy threads about how the Hawks play dirty and rah rah , who gives a shit
They do everything to win, and Id be proud to have Hodge Mitchell and co represent my footy club
When we start falling behind, maybe its not the worst thing to give someone an ear massage in a marking contest.. might miss a week or two but then the opposition knows atleast that they cant take easy marks
How many players have we had suspended over the last 10 years?
Dawesys piss weak elbow push last year?
Sylvias coathanger against the tiges in 2011 or 12

Cant think of much else
