Did anyone else hear Ross say Mick just needs a good summer and he'll be able to play out 4 quarters no problem? Clearly getting a contract extension. And deservedly so.

Would still hope he is close to getting 60% time in an AFL match or 5 this year.

Maybe 2 more WAFL and have a crack at backend of this year.

It is a nice luxury to have, but I still see McCarthy as our best 3rd tall.

When Taberner comes back, McCarthy will be competing with Cox for that third tall role.

Matera Cox Walters
Apeness Taberner Mundy/resting mid

That's how our forward line would line up if everyone was fit (not counting Bennell)

Taberner IMO is still our #1 pure key forward. All 3 are good contested marks, but he's better at leading and kicking for goal than the other 2. Apeness is a great fit for Ruck/Forward. So Cox vs McCarthy for that 3rd tall spot is going to be tough decision.

I reckon you would have Taberner's babies if you could. At least marry him.

Tabs would finally play his CHF role, so it'll be scary how good he would be at that when he's not worrying about two roles. Definitely need Tabs/Cox. Apeness will stay in. Just for his marking alone, swapping out with Sandi. The best tall defender will have to go on Sandi. Then that means we're stretching defences

In the preseason win against the Eagles, Tabs was stronger than Barass but they moved McGovern onto him to take him out of the game a bit. The Ape would be able to match McGovern for strength, so I think against certain teams like the Eagles we can play both Tabs and Apeness. McGovern has killed us with his intercept marking the last few games so I would love to see Apeness compete against him... not as mobile as McGovern but his strength and aggression should nullify his influence

A lock? Wow. Apeness has exceeded expectations but is not even close to a lock imo. He is the worst forward of those three but clearly the best ruck. Given it is about an 80/20% fwd/ruck arrangement I prefer a good forward that is an ok ruck as opposed to a good ruck who is an ok forward.
Perhaps I am overstating it as a lock, and I agree Apeness will have to earn his spot as a forward. But I think two of Apeness, Taberner and Cox is acceptable, three is too heavy. If he maintains his fitness Apeness is one of the two for me, because of his ruck ability.

McCarthy isn't really competing with Cox imo. He needs to be more about mobility, whereas Cox is about marking power. Cox OR Apeness.

I think we can play all three or four - Tabs, Cox and McCarthy have the ability to push up to the wing with their mobility, take some marks and be the link up player, while Ape can stay forward/ruck. McCarthy is arguably the best kick inside 50, and is more mobile than the other talls. And Tabs and Ape contributing in the ruck will keep Sandi fresh.

This is what I would like to see:
- Ape playing mostly FF while relieving Sandi in the ruck
- Tabs playing CHF, pushing down to the wing, and playing a little time in the ruck to rest Sandi/Ape
- Cox playing CHF/HFF, pushing into the wing, moving into HB or back of the square to provide intercept assistance if needed
- McCarthy playing mostly wing and HFF to deliver inside 50 and snag a couple of goals of his own, at his best he plays as a tall medium forward IMO

Tabs/Cox pushing to the wing means we can contest if our backs have no other option than to bomb it long, and I would argue that they are both a more reliable mark than Sandi (not to put the big man down, he can clunk them)

Remember Cox is / was a defender in his younger years, so why pigeon hole him forward. We haven’t had the luxury of a swingman in years

I really think we will see Ross change up the forward line mix as the year goes especially as tabs comes back, Dixon to maybe get a game or two and Bennell(?) to maybe play a few.

All of a sudden, what and who do we trade/draft for next year if this potential starts to perform

A) our backline kpp's and third talls (Kersten and Logue) are set
B) at the age of 19 he just kicked 4 goals against a good side and has in general been the best fwd prospect we've had since Pav (at this stage of his career)

There shouldn't be a need to move him to the backline

To add to this, he only started playing back in his draft year I believe

Cox played forward in his younger days.

Cox played forward in his younger days.

That's what I thought too, we tried him in defence with not much luck

How good is it having a bunch of decent talls to choose from,

It's like being in a foreign land and not speaking the language

This guy has me excited (along with Cox). Impacted each contest, took some marks, created goals. Hope his injuries are behind him.

Taberner and Cox are outstanding marks, and Apeness very good. I think that set up is overkill, and we would benefit by more speed and skill surrounding two of them. In my mind that potentially includes McCarthy and Mundy.

Cox may be able to play back but I think we have the cast down there to do well, and I am especially liking the speed of the players in our defence.

West Coast have worked with 3-4 talls for most of the season.

Kennedy - Tabs
Lycett - Apeness
Darling - Cox

+ Waterman who is 6'3

Obviously ours boys have a way to go to match their output but the last two weeks have shown we are definitely seeing an improved connection between our midfield and fwdline when we have multiple players able to take a contested grab in the forward line and down the wings for the outlet kick.

It was a long time ago but one of Apeness' draft highlights was his endurance running. Get a full preseason into him and the Tabs/Apeness/Cox combo will be a fairly mobile fwdline. Just need to make sure the smalls are crumbing and pressuring rather than trying to take a mark mark with the big boys.

waterman is listed at 191cm. Lycett averages .4 goals a game.

Just watched the replay. Apeness did some really nice things. He's big and strong with good hands and he can actually football a bit.
I thought he was finished. Very happy to be wrong.

For someone of his look and size he actually has some very nice tricks with moving the ball forward / getting it out of traffic.

Based on what?

He was the ruck/forward that we needed at the time and was considered the best shot on goal of his draft year. He has been really unlucky with uncommon injuries but seems to be getting game time at Peel now.

He could be the answer in a few weeks to the KPF that we are crying out for.

Well..... I was kinda right, in a way....He was the Ruck/Fwd we have been crying out for :D:D

Good game big fella!!!

and? Do you think this fwdline is too tall?

Walters - Cox - ******
Apeness - Tabs - Matera

*= Giro, Switta, Rankine or Ian Hill would be nice.

190cm is 6'3.

I was commenting on the fact that Eagles run a very tall forward line and also happen to be sitting comfortably near the top of the ladder. They are a very effective team at scoring and the tall forward line doesn't seem to be hurting them. I think we've tried the smaller forward for little/no success. We have some emerging tall talent on the list, can't hurt to try.
