I like the kid he wasn't overwhelmed at all and put his body on the line .
Ken Judge was not that impressed with Apeness because he seamed more worried about loosing contact with his direct opponent than playing his natural game of charging on the lead .
Pavlich was talking to him quite a bit after each time the ball came into our forward 50 ,giving him encouragement and getting him to co ordinate their leads so that the GWS backs had to decide who was going to receive the pass from out midfielders .
Pav hasn't had the luxury of one on one contests for quite awhile so you could see the smile on his face from the top of the 3 tier stand .
Apeness will benefit from the experience of playing with Pavlich and it won't be long before Apeness will be the player opposition backmen will be scared of when they hear his pounding boots coming from behind to crash the pack .

A sad read searching through which Apeness I should bump. :(

Feel like he has a potential window in front of him while Tabs is out to grab a B22 spot. Hopefully he can get a chance in the upcoming weeks. Just needs to stay on the park, improve his fitness base and hopefully demand selection through a ripping game at Peel.

Given his size he probably needs to do both. Even Joe Daniher does some ruckwork.
Yes, but what's more important and what feels more of a need? We need goals, not hit outs. Darcy is clearly our next ruckman for the next 10 years, Tabs is injured, we need Ape playing forward.

The optimist buddy in me is considering an opportunity for him to have a run, generate some form in the Afl team and then have both the Ape and Tabs available later in the season...

Agree, clock is ticking, give him a chance even 50% TOG and see how he goes.

He’s done.

Never wanted to say it but yeah.

Dumb pick in retrospect despite showing some mongrel.

Based on what?

He was the ruck/forward that we needed at the time and was considered the best shot on goal of his draft year. He has been really unlucky with uncommon injuries but seems to be getting game time at Peel now.

He could be the answer in a few weeks to the KPF that we are crying out for.

I think he's referring to the fact that he'd already done an ACL before we drafted him.

Jake Stringer horrible mangled his leg before being taken at pick 5. Same with Ryan Burton at pick 19.

It hasn't really been that acl that has hurt his career. Rather all the subsequent injuries that has occurred. Recruiters aren't fortune tellers. Was Mora a stupid pick? Nah he was clearly a great talent just had a freak run with injuries.

Mora hadn't already done an ACL when we picked him though.

Well he'd done his ACL, he wasn't really a ruck or forward but a bit of both, his form wasn't outstanding, and he'd been playing rugby most of his life. While I think he did okay in his few games and think he has more natural ability than Taberner, things were stacked against him.

Our issues weren't so much him though I guess, it's the fact we were so staunchly against drafting tall forwards for so long. We were very happy to sit on our hands and use Pav for as long as possible. I'd say we're still doing the same thing now. We have a few more but none of them are hugely promising. If you had 15 okay mids you'd be trying hard to get a really, really good mid in. I don't get why we're happy to just consistently go plan C on it. It's almost like they draft key forwards out of obligation and not need.

So because Apeness had one ACL they should have been able to predict he would have two subsequent PCL reconstructions on both knees, a broken collar bone and a sprained ankle?

We needed a tall and he was the best available its really as simple as that. And it ain't over for him yet.

Rory Lobb and Ben Brown were both still available at the pick we took Apeness.

Guys who've done previous ACL's usually don't get drafted at all. It's a big risk to take with such a high pick. And his subsequent injury problems have shown why.

A guy his size who's already done an ACL in his teens is extremely unlikely to be physically capable of a long career in the AFL.

Dude Ben Brown and Rory Lobb both played primarily in the ruck before they were drafted.

"Guys who've done previous ACL's usually don't get drafted at all."

Joel Selwood and Max Gawn both did ACLs in their junior careers.

Just last year GWS picked up Aiden Bonar with pick 11 and he did 2 ACLs in his junior career lol.

Oh and the biggest kicker of all.....Ben Brown also had an ACL in his junior career.

Think you are talking out your ass with that one.

Apeness played mostly as a ruck. Ben Brown played primarily as a forward and kicked 29 goals the year before he was drafted.

Yes, Ben Brown did an ACL as a junior too. And as a result was overlooked for the next 3 AFL drafts. Apeness we took in the first round.

Way to twist history Ben Brown wasn't overlooked because of the acl he was overlooked because he was an average ruckman in a part of the country talent scouts don't pay close attention to anymore he moved to Victoria to be a back up ruckman in Werribee. It was only then after playing half the season in Werribee's reserve team did he make the shift to playing forward and the only reason North noticed was because he was right under their nose. He went pick 40 something literally every club missed the boat on that one. And he basically fell into North's lap through dumb luck.

Apeness had played as a forward/ruck in his career he played in the same side TAC cup side as Tom Boyd. He did his ACL playing rugby but his football career had been without serious injury.

Way to dodge the rest of the comment as well.

Also in case you forgot

Jake Stringer leg break as bad as Barlow's went pick 5

Ryan Burton same went pick 19.
