I've been very encouraged by Michael's efforts over the last couple of games. Given the time he's had away from the game, I think he's done bloody well.. if he can start clunking a few up front it will do wonders for his confidence, much like Cox.
Will be interesting how he goes with Sandilands in the team.

For a guy who has horrible luck I hope he does well.

Ross mentioned in an interview last week or the week before that Apeness was never drafted to be a permanent forward, he was always to be Ruck/Fwd.
He has one thing that could make him a very handy ruck/forward and that is his ability to take a great contested mark. Yes he is not as mobile or as quick as a Rory Lobb but i think he has the ability to hit the scoreboard a lot more than some ruck/forwards going around in the league. On top of that he hits a marking contest very very hard and he will have a lot of players looking over their shoulder when dropping in front of a leading Apeness.

The key for him for the rest of the year is to keep on the park and build his confidence as he hasn't had a clear run at it since being drafted. He has potential he just needs a few things to go his way. Fingers crossed he can finally have a bit of luck this year!

There was a great passage of play when Apeness was running up field and the ball was kicked long, Apeness turned and marked it nicely on an angle. Would be regulation for Fyfe but pretty tough for a ruckman. He’ll never have too much speed but I reckon at full fitness his mobility might surprise a few here.

sorry i didn't know Ross did the draft prospects
In this draft year, Apeness played for Eastern as a ruck who went forward because Tom Boyd was the main power forward.

At the time, the club recruited as a forward/ruck.

Last weeks he has been playing more ruck than forward. It will be interesting how he goes in the role he was recruited for.

Ross has already given Sandi a couple of stints this year playing as the deep tall forward. If Ape can do a reasonable job in the ruck, I wouldn't mind trying this some more. You know that Sandi will draw defenders meaning if it comes to ground (which it should) there should be some free purple jumpers around the contest.

I think in time Ape might have much the same effect once he starts clunking them inside 50 and monsters a few opposition defenders.

Agree with that one.

Interesting that people have been saying that Apeness being recruited is proof of us recruiting a key forward and now your a crazy man for suggesting that he was mainly recruited as a forward.

With Darcy on the scene he'll need to hit the scoreboard or be resigned to ruck depth a-la Johnno Griffin.

It's beyond awesome that he's getting a run at it now and still think he's got a bit of promise as a forward/ruck.

Really happy that the Ape stays in and even more happy that it means we have two ruckman playing. Never liked Cox trying to ruck as amongst other things it took marking power out of the forward line. I really hope the footy gods look after him injury wise.:rainbow:

Before the draft, Apeness was mainly playing ruck with a reasonable amount also forward.

I believe we drafted him with the intention of making him a forward; we the played him almost exclusively there at Peel in his first year. Some will remember Ross saying in Apeness's first year "I think we have a power forward here" or something to that effect.

I believe last year we decided we couldn't just play him forward. This year Ross actually said in a preseason discussion that we had thought originally he was a forward, but that players his size can't need to ruck and play forward.

In terms of our strategy, I believe our preference atm is to have a "main forward" and a "ruck forward" where at the start of the season when injuries were minimal this was McCarthy as the main forward and Taberner as the ruck forward. Last game we had Cox and Jones. When Sandi comes back I expect it to be Cox and Apeness potentially, with McCarthy maybe playing third tall.
