Yeah back the kids, recontract Thommo and bring in Barlow. FMD.
We both know the organic growth line was spin to cover up the Gibbs failing.

The real strategy is to add an experienced mid and hope for the best - if we pick up Barlow that strategy is confirmed.

Really....apart from reducing some of Thommo's game time, do you really see many changes to the 22 barring injury.

I will still be amazed if Douglas and MacKay dont assume their normal positions.

Barlow would be a great get IMO and for peanuts, why not?

Replace Thommo with him. Play him in the guts and he will excel. Ross the boss been playing him all over the shop this year.

Chuck in Milera and our pick 13 as well and I can see plenty to be positive about.

I think if we go for Barlow it doesn't go against the "organic growth" strategy. I think we lost Lyons because we needed to let him go if Gibbs was joining our list for salary cap and list position vacancy reasons. I think when we traded him we still thought we would end up with Gibbs but couldn't wait until after the deal was done as we expected it might take place in the last minute of the period. Now we didn't get Gibbs and lost Lyons, Barlow would be the Lyons replacement.

Basically going after Barlow wouldn't be to fix the holes in our gameplan, it would be to replace Lyons.

I can't help but disagree. I believe that we let Lyons go as we really wanted to get more draft picks. Lyons just didn't fit in to the team anyway you look at it, and he was low balled contract wise long before Gibbs was on the radar.

If Jarman doesn't nominate us, I will reconsider this, but getting rid of Lyons opens the door for Jarman without diluting the next year's draft.

Either way, it will be interesting if we do go for Barlow. I would, I outlined as much a little while ago on this blog (but the champion posters shot down this approach with their infinite wisdom no doubt achieved through prolific behaviours coupled with Dusty Martin hype). My preferred approach was always and remains:
  • Improve draft position
  • Recruit maturity cheap (ala GWS)

Gibbs came from out of nowhere, but was not worth it. If he was worth Lever and Milera, then he was worth 2 first rounders. I can't imagine many if any on here agree with that - we dodged a bullet there.

This is difficult one to asses.
Barlow will still take up a list spot and has to paid. There is a cost.
He would come here to play not as SANFL backup.

On the field all I can see is him and Thommo together and I don't like it.
EDIT It's the resigning of Thommo that gets my shackles up. The AFC spin on it is just BS

Yeah we both know it, but the club have put it out there so if they don't follow through theyre going to be open to a lot of criticism.
I expect DMac and Thommo to play 10 games and Douggie to play at least 15.

Has a pretty healthy record in finals I seem to remember, dominated 1 from memory, was it vs Port in '14 when Port beat them can't remember (EDIT wasn't this game)

EDIT:
2012 Elim Final v Geelong (MCG) 27 disposals, 6 marks, 11 tackles - Win
2012 Semi Final v Adelaide (AAMI) 20 disposals, 7 marks, 4 tackles - Loss
2013 Qual Final v Geelong (SS) 32 disposals, 6 marks, 8 tackles, 3 goals - Win
2013 Prelim v Sydney (Subiaco) 24 disposals, 6 marks, 8 tackles 1 goal - Win
2013 GF v Hawthorn (MCG) 23 disposals, 3 marks, 8 tackles - Loss
2014 Qual v Sydney (ANZ) 28 disposals, 3 marks, 9 tackles - Loss
2014 Semi v Port (Subiaco) 23 disposals, 8 marks, 5 tackles 2 goals - Loss
2015 Qual v Sydney (Subiaco) 18 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 1 goal - Win
2015 Prelim v Hawthorn (Subiaco) 17 disposals, 4 marks, 5 tackles 1 goal - Loss

Some wishful thinking there!

In terms of midfielders inside the centre square I'd say as follows:

1. Sloane
2. Thompson
3. Barlow
4. M Crouch or B Crouch
6. Douglas
7. CEY

Not in frame - Atkins, Knight, Mackay, Cameron

The high half forward/pseudo mid role that Lyons played last year could perhaps go to Barlow which would at least keep both Crouches in our four centre square midfielders rotation

It would effectively end Milera's short term career options with us though

Keeping Thompson on surely rules out any need to recruit a player like Barlow.
The high half forward role is what got him dropped at freo, but Im not sure if that's because they sucked. Might be in the guts or bust for him I think. I've liked him as a player but I dont think hes the right fit for us now.

Christ, we really should have done something during trade period. Given the talent on offer we could have been bold and creative- got any two of Gibbs, Lewis, Mitchell, Rockliff - ideally the first 3 for footskills. Traded Lyons and Douglas for picks. Trade/delist CEY Mackay. Retired Thommo. Perhaps dip into the 22 and trade someone of quality for some good picks, get back in the draft. We'd have a ready to go midfield- albeit ageing- but some picks to replenish. Atkins, Knight, Cameron, Milera, Menzel vying for outside/half forward spots, Sloane, Gibbs, Mitchell, Crouches in the guts. Looks alot better.

Nah all too hard, lets go for a delisted FA and use 13.

Get Barlow for peanuts. If he performs, he stays in the side. If not, he is depth. What is the problem here? Just make sure we don't pay him an exorbitant amount of $$ and we are good.
That didn't seem to matter to a number of blokes this year as we put an emphasis on keeping the same 22 out on the park over whether individual performances warranted them being dropped or not.

With the organic, grass fed line you would expect we need to promote from within.

Barlow is slow.
We do not need Barlow.
We have Barlow types.
We do not need Barlow.
CEY is faster than Barlow.
Play CEY, Wigg, Milera, Knight.

We do not need barlow

Shittest. Haiku. Ever.

Take a punt on the lad. Worst case scenario as people have mentioned, he can be midfield depth and an experienced hand in the SANFL side along with Thommo. Best case senario he becomes a premiership midfielder who rackes up 30 touches a game

Douglas will play 22 matches. Mackay gets 20+. Thommo at least 15

He'll be on less $$'s than what it would've taken to keep Lyons, So we front load a few contracts to bank some cap space to bring in a decent free agent next year, Probably Rocky but I'd prefer Martin, just can't see it happening.

I don't see a problem if we had him and Thommo. Barlow would improve our midfield and Thommo is on a non-guaranteed games contract so he might only play half the season. Barlow is a ball-magnet and still has at least a couple of good seasons left in him.
