This may ruffle some feathers but I simply cannot for the life of me see what all the fuss is about concerning Harrison Wigg. When I have watched him in games on TV admittingly, he has failed to impress me. Sure he has a nice kick but he doesn't get enough of it. He is small, not particularly quick and gets brushed aside way too easy for mine. I rate him the same as Menzel, they both have the rep but underperform in my view. I'm not saying he won't make it but he has a few in front of him.

That's a pretty fair assessment .......hopefully the one year contract is that stimuli to get his backside into gear and go to another level

Very few players show significant improvement after being on the list for 5 years. Those I have got wrong showed rapid & massive improvement fairly quickly after I made those wrong calls - Cameron & Laird are both examples of players I underestimated. I'm struggling to think of a player who has been around for as long as CEY, playing as few games as CEY, who has ever gone on to be more than a fringe player.

I think there are several issues with CEY's game - his kicking is more random than a roulette wheel, his defensive pressure is lacking, he lacks the attitude/aggression to make it, and his training work ethic is (reportedly) questionable. His hand skills are fine, and he does get a reasonable amount of the ball, particularly at SANFL level. However, his game does have some serious flaws - which is why he has rarely been selected (aside from the Walsh era).

The only reason he was selected during Walsh's tenure was due to injury. During the time he played we had injuries to Sloane, Douglas, Brad Crouch, Knight, Atkins, Grigg + a couple more I can't recall at this stage. He was literally almost one of the last mids standing. The fact he had a 'mature' body got him his crack.

You're reminding me of all those people who said the same for Lyons; "if he's good enough he'll play". In the end he proved he was good enough but he didn't play until the sub rule was gone and guys like Wright were moved on. That kind of thinking is just shallow and naive, and is underpinned by a need to trust the coaches.

Well guess what, Lyons got a chance this year and he took it, He was good enough and did play. he was one of 6 plus players that did.

Lyons proved that he was good enough to be a fringe player, just like Wright & co before him. He didn't prove that we'd been leaving a gun player in the sheds.. just that he was capable of stepping up to the plate when we needed to replace one fringe player with another.

Let's face it, there are good reasons why Adelaide were happy to trade him (and actively encouraged it), receiving fairly limited picks in return (#43 & #67). If they thought he was a gun player, not just a fringe dwellar, then they would have retained him or pushed for a lot more in the trade.

Baulderstone, Osborne, Fort, (Forgot the eagles ruckman) all good ruckmen around the stoppages, feeding good runners, Our ruck were good but they did not win all the ruck stoppages.
And yes I talking about Wigg, who's stoppage work was good, and more so what he did after winning the ball. Also He must have done something good as he polled well in the Club Best players.

Wigg did get more votes in the SANFL B&F, so the coaches presumably were more impressed with his performances than CEY's. Wigg was named on the emergency list more often than CEY.

I still think the more likely option is Douglas moving back into the midfield, with Milera/Menzel filling the vacancy created at HFF.

Agree I believe a player has to earn the right, but just as important needs to hold his spot, Stats don't always show the work off the ball, I rate that work and how damaging they are when they get the ball.

I'd guess it's likely reasonably even between them and depends on what is needed. Wigg may have been on the emergency list more often than CEY, but CEY played 2 games to Wigg's 0.

This isnt Dream team where you try and fill half the team with guns and the rest with rookies. Every team has there guns and thats no more than 3 players. 5 if your lucky.

Our Gun players last year Sloane, Sloane and Sloane. Talia a gun defender. Tex can be a gun. My point is most teams are filled with role players not just ours.

I agree with you that he did. A lot of Norf fans were calling for his head and never rated him while he was there. Will be very interesting to see if he does get picked up.

This isn't about what the players do with their opportunities, it's about how they get them and the role the coaches play in this regard. It's all well and good to say that if they're good enough they'll play when you're talking about players with enough talent to put the question of whether they'll make it at AFL level beyond doubt, but for those where it's not so obvious they may need a coach to take a chance on them. You highlighting the fact that one of our former reserves players grabbed an opportunity once it was finally given to him after years of solid football in the SANFL doesn't strengthen your argument, it weakens it, because it shows just how easy it is for a player's value to be overlooked. The league is littered with examples of players whose value went unrealised until circumstances gave them an opportunity. You need to accept that coaches make mistakes and sometimes it can mean the difference to a player's career, and it's frequently not a case of "if you're good enough you'll play".

you've massaged the stats well in your favour there, go and have a look at their votes per game.
