not in a million years, would be a disgrace to the country letting that po0fster lead us in the baggy green.

I voted no but that is a stupid comment.

I would think punter has at last 3 to 5 years left in the baggy green.

after him? real hard to say.

I think White shows tremendous leadership potential, Katich and lee are about the same age as Punter and lee isn[t even a regular in the side. Haddin is no spring chicken although he seems marked as the next test keeper. (more power to Gilly to play for ever :D )

for clarke to captain Aus I would like to see him captain NSW first, and see how he goes there.

Precisely. Can anybody give us an accurate measure of his captaincy ability and experience? Tactical nous? Overall knowledge of pitches, bowlers and field positions? I'm not saying he doesn't have it, just that nobody has proven that he does.

Fantastic young batsman of course, but you can't make him captain just because he scores lots of runs and has a cool haircut.

It is quite possible that in 7 or 8 years' time, Clarke will be the star batsman of the team, but some other player (Not necessarily Cam White - he has to cement his place first) of lesser ability will be captain for his tactical and leadership skills.

Besides, I think Gilly should be the next Aussie captain - starting next week! :)

This reminds me abit of the early 90's when Martyn was being touted as a future test captain while attempting to establish himself.

There's still al ot of water to go under the bridge.......

Summed it up perfectly. Realistically all the candidates who play in the Test team are the same age or older than Ponting- when Ponting retires, realistically the only player who MIGHT be in the team is Clarke.

I can't really see anyone else being captain in about 5 years. Gilchrist will probably be over, lee (yeah would be a really good capt  ), How old will gillespie be? Katich will be the only other contender but he is too quiet in my opinon

At least he's captained (both of) his states...

All of those guys will be retired before Ponting- the next generation of McGraths, Warnes, Martyns, etc will make the transition in the next few years. That is when we can look at the position.

yeh but they'll probably come in a year or so b4 ponting and wont have time to establish themselves for a captains position

What about Mark Cosgrove!

Oh dear god no! :D

ATM I think Micheal Clarke is the obvious choice, but as Larrikin said, there is plenty of water to go under the bridge yet.

Micheal Clarke is the only established youngster in the side and is well ahead of everyone else at the moment.

Didnt Micheal Clarke captain the Australia A side last season? I stated then while I was watching the match with a mate that Micheal Clarke will be the next Australian captain.

If I had to lay a bet on the next Australian captain it would be Micheal Clarke but I think anything could happen yet.

Nope. It was Greg Blewett captaining that team.

Clarke captained the game at the WACA.

oh yer i memba now he did too.....lolz....he shood b 1 day captain not test, ponting dun deserve both captaincies

Greg Blewett might of captained the tests last year but I am pretty sure Micheal Clarke captained the one dayers.

I know it isnt much but it is a start for Micheal Clarke and who else at his age can put captain of Australia A on their resume?

By the time Ponting steps dow from the captaincy i'd say that they will bring in a St.Kilda style rotating captaining policy.

Brett Lee will get a gig in a Test and bowl himself unchanged from one end for the whole game.

over 20 one dayers, and 10 fourday/testsclarke would have a great deal more success as captain of australia than NSW

if you ask me, captaining NSW over a long period of time is a bad idea for clarke - he's better off being vice captain and captaining the odd match here or there

unless nsw go back to being the early 90's force they were

I think it's called irony

Don't think Clarke will be next captain, but i'd reckon he will captain them one day.

He doesn't come across as being particular mature, but he has a fantastic cricketing brain. Reads the game well, and does a lot of hard work.
