Extremely impressed with his kick outs. Not one mistake looked like his been playing AFl for 5 years. Pears also looked at home as well. Things are looking up at Essendon

Hurley is a ripper! But, Tredrea was the ideal opponent. Hurley will be a star, but will stuggle against the likes of Buddy, Fev and T.Cloke (Modern Forward). He suits the slower players like Tredrea, Hawkins, J.Brown. It wouldn't surprise me if he made it as a forward.

First thing it was a great debut but lets not all get too carried away and act like a Tigers supporter and claim him as the next big thing(I'm not saying anybody has but lets keep a lid on it). Lets keep the expectations low and hope that he exceeds them.

Secondly, I would love to see Ryder in the forward line, I think his height and athletic ability would cause a few problems for apposing teams, problem is Hurley/Pears/Daniher all have a fair bit of work to do before we send Ryder up the ground. Too be honest I think that is 12 to 18 months away from happening.

Not getting carried away at all, I have been on the Ryder to the forwardline bangwagon before probably anyone here - at least 18 months. IMO Ryder isnt suited at all to the key back role, and has been played there we need him there, not because he is suited there.

He doesnt like body on body pressure, his instincts are clearly to mark before spoil and wants to be creative. Add to this the rules, which make it very difficult for a key back on todays forwards - especially key backs who are athletic, and can jump and mark, coupled with his very good kicking, makes it a no brainer, IMO. He is very good (for his size) at ground level, which adds a further underrated and important dimension, because as was again highlighted on the weekend, once the ball hits the deck in our forwardline too many of our players are near useless. Statue-esque if you will.

Now Hurley, he clearly has the defensive instincts that Ryder doesnt have, and thats fair enough - I would bet that he has played more games as a defender in his life than Ryder has. He seems to thrive on body on body work, and has the intuition to spoil when required, or mark when required. Simply put, blind freddy can see he is more suited there than a makeshift like Ryder.

IMO players can learn huge amounts off others with experience, so I would go forward with the thinking in mind to give Hurley, Pears and Daniher as much time as possible with Fletcher. Just like Carlton's youngsters learn so much from Judd etc, we can do the same.

Tim Watson was correct on SEN Monday morning - Hurley will play just about all games he is eligable for. It simply makes sense, and his development can be fast tracked. He is probably more physically ready for the hustle and bustle of that position than Ryder is.

Lets give Ryder a season across half forward as a lead up forward; we are breaking down there something shocking anyway, so it cant really hurt. He can also be given time on the ball as a Ruckman, where he played much of his junior years. Again, it cant hurt to have another AFL quality backup ruckman going forward, can it?

We are at a time that we can mix and match a bit, as we have the older guys there to work with, and also make sure that going forward we are in the best possible position.

Travis Cloke is quick and a modern forward?
