Michael Johnson

imo what cruelled mj was the 5 week suspension he got for accidently making head high contact in the pre season game against theroos in '07.
the afl decided to make an example of the new rule and chose somebody in purple to make an example of,ala hayden ballantine this year.
i think up untill this point johnno could have been anything ,but for some reason this took the wind out of his sails and he hasn't been the same player since.
fair enough to say he should be able to rise above this but in this game momentum and confidance is everything

Lost his Dad just before his suspension, which seemed to knock him off his axis.
I would love to see Michael return to the form he showed back in 06, as he was integral to the form of the team.
If you look at the highlight clips from that time, he featured in most & his ability to win the ball one on one was outstanding.
The guts he showed in the Tigers game was also a showing of his character.
Interestingly though when he was first rookie listed they had to slim him down, as he was considered too plump.

Johnson off a half back flank is awesome....unaccountable?....I'm not sure where these comments come from...most likely seen from the eyes of a supporter when Johnno was playing as a loose man in defence. The bloke is probably our best 1 on 1 player pound for pound at the club...we need him 100% fit for our team to progress...IMO...he is of HUGE importance.

I think he was played out of position this season as a forward come pinch hitter in the ruck....his best possie is CHB or half back flank...his creativity is a benchmark for our side.

..in 2006 yada yada yada. Alot of players made some reputations then.

Sounds a bit like England referring to their 1966 world cup win. Hopefully we won't have to wait as long to replace those positive memories.

IP, I know Pav and Sandi have risen to demi -god status amongst a large section of Freo's Big Footy supporters but to suggest that either or both don't have areas of their game that couldn't do with some improvement is stretching it a bit. eg pav has been oft criticised, and rightly so, for not chasing and tackling enough. As for Sandi - where do I start? And even though MJ is our third most influential player he is still a work in progress.
I am very much looking forward to your excellent reports on preseason training though IP.:)

Geez, why not give the constant carping a rest.

read my original quote.... i believe that johnson up forward will play to the standard that a guy of his talents should... you obviously believe that he has fulfilled his potential, i believe that for whatever reason he has underperformed. its players like johnson/mundy/schammer who havent developed as well as they should or could have that are a big reason why we are where we are. i like johnson. i just think he should be played forward/wing.... but he DOES need to improve... dont know what it is salim, but every post i make is followed by you bagging me out, bring some constructive conversation to the table instead of being a dick all the time hey

 surely you jest. i reckon he is horrible one on one. doesnt have the strength to compete, and has had his arse handed to him many times by his opponent.

i like him but up forward or on a wing where he can use his strengths which is run all day and read the play. his skills are great as well

Third most influential? that's taking it a bit far.

And as for Pav chasing and tackling, did you not see any of Freo's games this year?

I asked yaka the same question earlier in the year, it seems my suspicions were vindicated. Clueless.

I understand why some want MJ playing off half-back but the fact is we have more than enough players who can cover that role and do it just as well (Duffield/Mundy/Broughton). His greatest value to the team right now is as a tall forward that can pinch hit in the ruck.

His greatest value would be owning CHB, or preferrably CHF with McPharlin sent back. A spine of
Tarrant
McPharlin
Palmer
Johnson
Pavlich
looks pretty good, but Johnno is the biggest question mark there(ignoring McPharlin's shit 09 form as our main forward)

For me Michael Johnson fits into the "utility" position apparently utility refers to a player that is alternative to a traditional position. Third tall, not quite flanker not quite midfielder and yet as much chance as winning a Norm Smith as Pav (eg Steve Johnson and Andrew Embley) because they bring something different to the table and can influence the result. I for one am a fan and once we get rid of the obsession with measuring FFC by the parts and focus on the whole then we will be a contender.

MJ will either be at the heart of our next finals run OR he will be the next de-listed...Personally, I think he is our third or fourth most important player

I feel satisfied now that I have read some of your comments on this site & your obviously a loungeroom supporter at best - this comment alone is gold

Nonbelievers should consult the 20 second mark of the following footage and acknowledge that Magic Johnson wins a game changing four on one hands down. WARNING: MAY CONTAIN JOSH CARR. ANYONE SENSITIVE TO SUCH GRAPHIC DEPICTIONS SHOULD AVERT THEIR EYES.

Also, feel free to marvel in the majesty of the raking left boot of Heath Black at 1:50. Sends shivers down my spine.

This 'carping', as you call it, is actually known as a realistic assessment.

wow, didnt know that being a member since 95 and having only missed around 15 games in total didnt give me the right to an opinion on a guy which almost all footy supporters would agree has underachieved.........
