You're assuming that every team in a 29 team league had an equal opportunity to win a title.

I'm doing no such thing. Every league will have good teams, mediocre teams and bad teams. That applies to the 29 in the 90's, but it certainly also applies to the 9-12 team leagues in 1957-1969.

This isn't meant to be a Russell bash, btw, as just like you I've not seen him play. But a ring now is certainly tougher to get than a ring back then.

Umm, Starks is dunking on Horace Grant, not Jordan

EPIC FAIL on your part

He ends up dunking on Jordan who comes in late if you have watched it.
Thats what made the dunk what it was back then, it was all about being done over Jordan.
It even made the top playoff moments in NBA history.

I guess I'm more referring to having more bad teams. Eg, depending on what division you're in you can have 16 games against pretty ordinary opposition, thus giving you a better chance to qualify for the postseason. Given all series are now best of 7 games, it reduces the chances of an upset. Hence why I believe in any given season there's 4 or 5 teams at most that have a chance to win it all.

Just watched it from several different angles. He does not dunk on Jordan. Michael is there, but he is not the one getting dunked on.

I think that's true enough, although I might have said 6 or 7 in some years.

But back then, you'd have been lucky to find 2 or 3 teams with any chance.

And fwiw, back then series were also Best-of-7...it's just there were only 2 or 3 of them, instead of 4. The Best-of-5 was only added later.

I wasn't aware of that. Thanks brother. When did the best of 5 first round series come into effect?

was he in the air attempting to block Starks? yes. He was in the contest even if Starks doesnt dunk right over the top of him.

im guessing when you watched it the play was under "Starks dunk on Jordan" :D

Just because Michael was in the contest doesn't make him the one thats getting dunked on.
