Is it my imagination, or has the stocks of available, highly credentialed, successful coaches never been lower than right now? Virtually every team that is considering a coaching change has Malthouse as their only choice. People seem to have accepted that Matthews and Roos are not interested. The teams who don't snare Malthouse are going to have to go with somebody untried or mediocre. I'm really not looking forward to the selection process again. It was so uninspiring last time. I remember thinking, "who the f*** is Dean Bailey?".

I am hoping he stays at collingwood after his tenure as senior coach and takes up the Director of Coaching role,BUT if he goes away i reckon he'll go to one of three clubs.

BULLDOGS
CARLTON
MELBOURNE

Each of these clubs have got young lists are are not far off with some tweeking at competing for a flag.

If Mick doesn't want to be challenged then sure, he should coach the Dogs or the Blues who have slightly older, bigger bodied and more experienced players on their list but if he wants to challenge himself to see if he is really as good as he thinks he is then getting Melbourne's first flag since 1964 with a young talented list would surely cement his place in history as one of the greatest coaches of all time. Your call Mick....

I tend to question how sane Malthouse is. Would like to see how this season pans out and whether Bailey can start moulding an impregnable game-plan for the future.

I don't understand the reason people discuss a contracted coach. He signed a five year contract with Collingwood at the end of 2009, so he has three years to go beyond this year. He has said himself numerous times that he'll be at the Magpies next year too. I didn't think Dean Bailey would achieve success at Melbourne when he was appointed, but isn't it best to keep possible replacements to those that will be available?

Your naive to think Mick has no chance of coaching next year. He's a gun coach that is being forced away from his club because they wanted to secure Buckley before another club did. How insulting is that? Mick will get plenty of offers and if I had to put my life on it I'd say he'd be coaching next year.

One eyed pie. Funny

Yes, it is best to discuss available candidates, but Malthouse has refused to be categorically nailed down regarding this new role at Collingwood. Until he does, there will be speculation that he might leave. Every time he has said he'll be at Collingwood next year, there has been an implied "but" after it. The position hasn't been defined, and Mick staying is contingent on the role being satisfactory to him. Ergo, he still might leave.

I'm not naive. I believe he will keep his word as he has consistently stated a number of times now. I believe it is naive for people to assume that he won't simply because Nathan Buckley takes over next season.
He's a gun coach that is being forced away from his club because they wanted to secure Buckley before another club did.
Who said he was forced? That simply sounds like an unfounded and unproven assumption. From my understanding, he agreed to the deal because he wants to spend more time with family, especially grandchildren, which he has not been able to do.

What was insulting? I'm not doubting he will get offers, but I'm extremely confident that he won't accept any of them.

They are just empty words that don't mean anything. I doubt very much that you will kill yourself if Malthouse remains at Collingwood next season.

Who is? If you're referring to me, then what have I said here that makes you feel that way? My opinion is that he will keep his word and honour his contract, at least for 2012, which is not one-eyed or outrageous at all. He has stated that he and Eddie McGuire have been working the details of what his new position will entail next season, and I'm sure that he will mentor the younger players that he has a great relationship with, amongst other things.

I saw Mick at the ground last night watching the game, don't think he would've got any motivation to join the mfc after that

Mick has said that he is contracted for next year.

He has also said, on numerous times, which Collingwood fans seem to miss/forget/ignore that he will only stay there if the role is fulfilling to him. Given that Mick comes across as an egomaniac control freak I can't see him ever being satisfied behind the scenes.

He might stay at the Pies next year, but I highly doubt it would be any longer than that.

Probably because he reneged on a Westcoast contract to join Collingwood in the first place...

You realise Mark Thompson was contracted for this year, and Matthew Knights was contracted until 2012 when both left their respective clubs. Contracts aren't set in stone, because if they were, then Brendan Fevola certainly wouldn't be running around for our VFL side right now.

You are easily the most annoying poster on Big Footy. Congrats.

I do only barrack for one team, but it it irrelevant to my opinion on this topic. This is a thread regarding the coach of my team, so it's appropriate for me to participate within the guidelines.

That's a completely different situation. Firstly, he only had one season to run at West Coast, whilst he has four seasons left including this year at Collingwood, which is not comparable. Secondly, he wanted to return to his home state which West Coast understood and the parting was mutual, which is also not the case in this situation.

I would love a dollar for every poster on BigFooty that attempts to personally insult another poster because they have nothing to say and have difficulty sticking to a topic.

Yes, he is contracted for three more years beyond this season.

I'm completely aware of what he has said, including that he would like to spend more time at his age with his grandchildren. He certainly didn't say at any time that he would not honour his contract as you're suggesting though.
Given that Mick comes across as an egomaniac control freak I can't see him ever being satisfied behind the scenes.
He has already stated that he will remain at Collingwood, and I'm sure the role he is given will satisfy him.
He might stay at the Pies next year, but I highly doubt it would be any longer than that.
He will definitely be at Collingwood in 2012 at the very least.

KS, when it comes down to it. Our comments are based on wishful thinking, and so are yours. You act like all your statements are based on impeccable logic and sound sources, but really they aren't. You have no reason to believe that the new role will be satisfying to Mick. You hope that to be true. The only thing that will settle this will be time. The only reason you are sure that Mick will be at Collingwood in 2012 is because he is obligated to give it a go and see if he likes it. That's less to do with having confidence in the new role, and more to do with living up to the spirit of the deal. He has to give it a go before he can legitimately walk.

Mick doesn't know what his role is next year, i dont know why anyone would sign a contract without knowing what they'll be doing, Mick role is going to be made up for him, a role that no club has or ever had, basically an unimportant role, I cant see Mick liking a role that is just made up to keep him at the club. Who knows where Mick is going to be next year but he has signed a contract at Collingwood, they could make it difficult for him to go anywhere else.

Interesting to note, his top assitants remain out of contract at years end.

I would love the Dees to have a fund raiser to bring them all over, I would reach in to my pocket to help the FD.

At the same time, the club could afford it now wih The Bentleigh Club acquisition and our previous debt demolition efforts. If we could convert our current list in to a premiership winning side on this raise then it would easily pay for itself.

Thoughts? Would you support a FD fundraiser (like the fighting Tigers fund) or would you like the club to take on some debt for a mind like Malthouse?
