Had the pleasure at the game of catching up with Mick Martyn and his lovely wife, and their 3 week old daughter. Yep - their third girl. I couldn't get a commitment from either party that they would keep trying until they get a father son candidate. Congrats to the Martyns.

Funny story also told. Apparently Mick was travelling back (can't remember where, maybe Albury) when he met a fan in a coffee shop.
Fan: Great to see you mate. Love watching you play footy.
Mick: Puffs chest out and said thanks.
Fan: Yeah - good luck at the doggies and I think the swans will really miss you.
Mick: Thanks mate.

I love it. The similarities are striking.

haha mick was one of my favourite players in the 90's, absolutely loved him.

loved it when the crowd would roar whenever he went on one of his rare runs (i remember he bounced the ball once and the crowd elevated from the stands haha). he was such a tough player. i remember one time he actually went down holding his knee, and it was kinda funny in a way because nothing had ever brought him down, and you'd think nothing could.

very underrated full back in my opinion... dunno why his name doesn't get raised when talking about the best full backs of the past 20 years

Mick Martyn said that he would never bump a player while he was doing up his shoelaces like Thompson did.

Yeah, so? Thompson would, and did. Mick said he was in favour of doing whatever you could to put your opponent off his game, just said it wasn't a tactic he personally would have used.

Mick Martyn is a geniunely nice guy. So far from what you'd expect from his demeanor on field that it's actually surprising.

Its called white line fever

Been quite a few players have had it over the years

Then again there have been some mongrels on both sides of the line as well

Mick has always been a gentle giant

Thought he had 2 of the greatest performances i have seen from a full back in the games i have seen that goes back to the 50,s

(Modra and Ablett even if that one didnt end well)

Not bad for a bloke who played most of his youth as a full foward prior to the North seniors

Wasnt bad at computer games either :D

hes a great bloke havnt seen him recently last time was when archer played the charity game up bush with a team scattered with ex roo players,

he had played hard in the heat was high 30s, as he came off at halftime, everyone headed for the gatorade, mick went straight for the beers. :)

he played the game hard and tough, but silvagni always got the accolades.
for was a pure defender the mick martyn smother was worth a kickn every time.
but unfortunately the one memory that sticks in the head, is the 94 prelim of him in the goal square after a flawless game on ablett, :(
