i was thinking there could be some pressure on him anyway given their last few performances when they were expected to win. supposed to be leading the pack but then went backwards.

Smith has had quite a head hunting list. He has ended 2 captains career and seen through 2 coaches' career at is still only 28. His sheer will power and personality has made him last man standing. But i don't agree with the nitini selection issue, sa did the right thing by dropping ntini in the 3rd test, in fact arthur's gamble paid off in the final test with an all pace attack. Duncan Flectcher as new coach could be alright cos he's got some maverick abilities about him.

i think he might hav been pushed. the nitini selection thing and the poor performances might have weighed against him in keeping his job

duncan fletcher will be next coach and he will turn that team into a rabble like he did with england at the end

Could actually be Darren Lehman after the IPL.

A day after Mickey Arthur quit as national coach, South Africa's selection panel has also been sacked by the board. Mike Proctor, the chairman of selectors, confirmed the development on a local radio station in Johannesburg.

Very interesting, was inevitable in my opinion.

Anything Pakistan can do, South Africa can do better.

Hope they enjoyed their time at number 1 as they won't be back any time soon with this sort of political wheeling and dealing.

South Africa implodes every few years with stunning regularity. Its a curious mix of politics, loss of form and completely mis directed thinking. It gets complicated a lot with all the quota issues.

Its bad not just for South Africa but for world cricket to have a strong time like that disintegrate like this...

And this after drawing the just-completed Test series with England 1-1, when South Africa should've won the series 2-1 with 1 test drawn. South Africa's failure to dismiss the England's tailend batsmen in the 2 drawn matches might have seen as the reason to dump Arthur. Or was the South African government behind the dismissal of Arthur and also the SA selection panel because of Ntini's non-selection during the series?

My dad is mates with the coach before Arthur, Jennings.

If will be interesting to see if he puts his hand up for another crack at the job. I know quit a few people who follow the Saffas around doing various roles and the general acceptance is the Smith can at times be quick to point the finger behind closed doors.

Jennings was not overly obsessed with Smith, perfect captain, not the greatest attitude and way to big and intimidating player to drop as Captain.

I think you will find it is 99% politics. Loss of form is often a direct result of politics. Would not supprise me if Arthur was given a secerate side note to leave so the board could appoint a black coach, ala Jake White and that joke of an appointment of de Villiers after the Union WC in 2007.

Apparently Arthur and Smith had a very good relationship.

Fletcher would be a very different proposition...
