Rumour Mid Season Draft

AFL are floating the idea of a mid season draft, which would help teams heavily inflicted by injuries or lacking some sort of player.

Now if they go with the "trade" scenario, who would Geelong Offload and what would they look for? If anything...

its hard to really think of anything Geelong would need that would be available come midseason draft time. Fully fit they have all bases covered pretty well.

I can think of one thing, if Ottens was no longer around and Tomahawk went down again...but yes, we have the bases fairly well covered.

It would be interesting to see how they make it work (i.e. bringing in a player mid season) with wages and the salary cap though.

Change is needed but I feel a mid-season draft is a waste of time. Has anyone done a Phantom and looked at who'd be the player likely to picked up? It would be rare that a player from a feeder league would be able to step in and be a viable injury replacement player.

A draft is basically about list building , the picking of the seeds to grow your club for the years to come. A mid-season player initiative should be about filling immediate needs. I doubt any champions will be picked up but you may get he chance to strengthen you weakest link.

A team like Geelong may be smack dab in the middle of a Premiership window and has a significant injury or two that could put their Flags chances sinking. Alternatively a club out of contention may prefer to play for the future , by putting games into kids. They may consider the chance to pick up a kid for an experienced player a good deal.Now whether this would mean permanent trades or short term leases who knows.

i really don't think there's any need. the pre-season draft has become a waste of time, and i can see only 1 or 2 clubs utilising a mid-season draft pick. perhaps hawthorn would pluck a ruckman from somewhere, and on form a guy like mitch thorpe could be picked up by a club like carlton that's short a key forward

other than that, the rookie list seems to do most of what a pre-season draft would achieve.

i'm definitely against players changing clubs mid-season.
