I am surprised that there isn't much more written about this guy. I hate using the "if he was playing in melb.." line but that's the case with Mike. This guy should be used as an example to all kids and people wanting a challenge after being bored with their lot in life.

The guy is the ultimate professional, i mean at the start of 2007 the guy didnt even know what the hell AFL was, let alone know what a sherrin was. He was playing for Canada in the Rugby world cup. While most of you all grow up with aussie rules and learning and trying to perfect skills for years, this guy did it in less than a few years. He trained and trained and trained until it all started to come together.

In 2013 he has gone up another level and now is proven target up forward, a dead eye dick for goal, top contested mark and one of the finest tap ruckman there are atm. Yet he gets the praises during a telecast but once the game is over thats it.

The AFL spent a fortune on RL hacks while this guy was playing as a rookie and being paid as one. They could easily used Mike to promote the code, heck they missed the boat and could have had him over at GWS!

Anyway i think he deserves more credit than he is getting and one pathetic man in Brian Taylor should be offering nothing but apologies to him.

This is more than just a swans discussion, its about how with determination one can easily succeed at what they want to set out to do, as cliché as it sounds.

Great thread, and definitely one of my favourite players in the AFL.

i just love the guy. I am just surprised that we aussies love these kind of stories but apart from the token article here and there he is ignored.

Also after every goal he doesn't go on like a pork chop. He just fists pumps his team mates and goes back into position. Apart from his taste in music (celine dion..he he j/k) he seems down to earth and very likable. The guy just seems so focused and determined and is inspirational!

This guy is just a freak of nature. A complete gun who will dominate in the coming years.

He has nailed one of the hardest parts of playing footy - reading the play. He knows where to position himself.

He's an excellent story, played a ripper in the GF too :(

He has probably had the exposure commensurate to his output.
Like I said, he's a great story, but he's no star (yet).

2013 averages

Kicks = 5.1
HB = 5.9
Marks = 3.3
Goals = 1.2
HO = 25.4

I didn't say he was a star, i was just pointing out how much he should be an inspiration as he has only really been playing rules for 5 years, with 3 of them spent just developing his skills. Such a short time frame. That he should be celebrated more than he is. There are lesser players who receive more props than mike does.

Those players you mention came through a system from a young age, so its expected of them. Mike didnt.

Yep, he's a great story, but most footy fans know his story, it's probably a similar story to many of the Irish boys who are playing well atm, so please, don't get me wrong, i'm taking nothing away from him.

Stats wise, he's comparable to Hale and Bailey.

Now there's a great story, Max Bailey

Surely this is a piss take.

David Hale has 15 HOs a game, yeah real close, and has kicked few goals so we can't even use the playing heavily in the forward 50 chestnut.

He also has Bailey covered in every statistical category comfortably.

Pyke is also the only non-forward who resides in the top ten for contested marks.

Good story though.

Got massive love for the big Canadian. Probably my favourite player in the league and I love the way he goes about it. Great mark and set shot at goal, plus his awareness has increased exponentially. The most impressive thing about him is his attitude though. Never gives up on the field and is so composed off it too.

Normally I'd say this should probably stay on the Swans board, but I'm interested to see what other supporters think of him. He's starting to get a couple of mentions in the AA thread, which is pretty exciting.

Trix,

While I agree Pyke has gone well, his positioning in his first two years was as bad as Izzy's - but not he's in his fifth year, he has the hang of it.

The moral is not not give up too fast on converts.

Why the aggressive reply, I was being quite respectful to Pyke, it's a great story.

Do you understand the term "comparable"

Player.....Kicks.....HB.......M.......G.......T.......HO
Hale.......5.3.......6.8.....3.8.....0.8.....2.3....15.5
Bailey......4.5.......4.4.....2.2.....0.5....3.0......22.6
Pyke........5.1.......5.9.....3.3.....1.2.....2.3.....25.4

Bailey is ahead in tackles btw, but as I said, Pyke is a great story, he's improving, but atm he's comparable, albeit slightly better than Hale and Bailey.

Your reply was quite immature and not necessary.

You were hijacking the thread unnecessarily. Has had a far superior year to either of the aforementioned players.

The real immaturity was taking a thread about a Canadian bloke coming down to Australia and playing serious footy and trying to trivialise it. The Bailey comment at the end was stupid and unnecessary if you want to start a thread about him go for it.

No, you derailed the thread with your rubbish reply, I however stated Pyke was a great story (several times now).
The reference to Bailey and Hale was putting his current form into perspective versus the recognition he has recieved, I think TriX78 realised that.

Anyway, enough of this, good luck to him, good player who is still improving.

Worthy ruining another thread. Everything just has to be about Hawthorn, of he'll make sure of it.

Anywhoozle, Pyke is a great story but an even better player. He's not a cameo or a gimmick now, but Mike Pyke the Sydney Swans player and premiership player.

His contested marking and goal kicking accuracy are things of beauty.

He was pretty quick in his day. In that clip he looks more like he'd be a outside mid than a ruckman.

Rugby Fullbacks do get a lot of exposure to contested marking and kicking, far more than a league player will.

Where the hell did that speed go?

The big separator between Pkye/Bailey and to a lesser extent the second ruck Hale is ability overhead. Pyke can do it all, he's taken some very telling defensive marks, offers a fantastic get out target around the ground and is a genuine force up forward.

Contested marking:

32 - Pyke
21 - Hale
6 - Bailey

You might have to explain to a few southern staters here the difference between "rugby" and "league" because a lot of them have no clue, and consequently will have no idea what the (very good) point is that you're making...

I spent half of last week trying to get it through to a few posters.
