It does not pay to be a rusted on fan of a Melbourne based club

These fans are the ones paying for the AFLs expansion

Paying GC and GWS $50m, out of their pockets, to make them better, and their own clubs worse. And what for ? No one gives a stuff about GWS, or Gold Coast, they have no fans and it has been 15 years

To give them draft picks, and make your draft picks worse

What exactly is in it for the Melbourne fans ?

Who cares if the game is bigger ? Who benefits other than the AFL admin, so they can pay themselves more .

Whilst I agree on the other hand we do need a national comp. But It was and is always about making money. That's how the world works. The only way to fix it is for those rusted on fans is to clean away the rust.

Pretty sure the VFL was slowly sinking without national expanion.

Also most of the income comes from the TV rights deal, which benefits from more games and a wider (e.g. national) audience.

So Melbourne fans benefit in a number of ways; the league still exists, the players can afford to be fully professional, the talent pool is wider, there's more games to watch.

Funny coming from a tigers fan whose team only managed to get a few premierships BECAUSE of the expansion teams coming in and affecting the drafts (mind you, Prestia, Townsend, Caddy and Lynch all helped win you those premierships)

The competition is not geared towards new vs old clubs.
The competition is geared towards AFL vs NRL/A League (I'd include RU but they are doing a good enough job of shooting their own feet) .
GCS & GWS have been a success when viewed through that lens.

I bet you didn't feel that way attending the 17 and 19 GF's.

How exactly has making more money for AFL house helped the Melbourne based clubs who are funding it ?

If anything they are worse off, as we cant watch our teams play every week in Melbourne.

Gold Coast and GWS have zero fans, its just a money pit subsidised by rusted old fans, to create more jobs for soulless suits to come up with more rules, and more ridiculous initiatives to justify their redundant jobs

Saving football: New documents reveal how close the VFL came to shutting down (theage.com.au)

national comp = having a comp.
not having your team play in Melb every week = seeing them play every other week

They're not.

There's plenty of local leagues for you to support.

Gold Coast and GWS have zero fans

Last year GWS had 33,036 members, GCS had 23,359.

its just a money pit subsidised by rusted old fans

Again, this isn't true. The fans aren't where the money comes from.

Yeah, Melbourne fans are so hard done by.
We're actually lucky the Melbourne based clubs pay so much to the AFL to keep the rest of us afloat.

The comp is heavily biased towards Vic clubs in so many ways but there's always Vic supporters whinging about the "interstate" clubs. Here's another lame whinge.

Not enjoying the national comp now the Tiges are in for a loooong stint in the wilderness?

Richmond get pumped by GC and suddenly GC shouldn’t exist. Oof, one game into Richmond’s downturn and we’re coming out strong.

Had the game not expanded your club probably doesn’t exist anymore. Or it exists in a semi-professional league where football players have other day jobs.

You get to watch your team in Melbourne 17-odd times a year.

I look forward to reading many such threads from Richmond supporters for the years to come. Bless you.

with >50% of the comp based in one state, it always will be.

more teams means more fans (read consumers).
Which will throw up inequities with player movement, exposure, etc.

At least in SA and WA, the local media can slightly tip the scales back. Harder in NSW and QLD.

Would take a decent population migration to change that. Or AFL to overtake rugby in NSW, at which point you'd likely see 4-5 NSW teams pop up.
But with Vic as the heavily populous "heartland" state, it's a tough thing to counteract

The timing may be purely coincidental, but this thread screams of 'My team just got beat by an expansion team after they poached our three-time premiership coach'...

Edit: what Elixuh said.
