.... as long as he is in the right head space .

Sit him down with GM and a couple of others and treat it like a job interview . If he still has passion for the game . If he is willing to take on a teacher/mentor role and the responsibilities that that entails , if he really is willing to contribute to our club for another 3 or so years then i think he would be fantastic for us .

I think he should be our number one recruiting priority if we want to be competetive in the next couple of years while we have such a young list that is still developing .

But ... if he comes across as having climbed Everist , done it all , and is just moving back to Melbourne because of the petti-coat government then wave him by.

Darren Gaspar - removing all my usual rhetoric regarding him , he will be struggling to get one more year out of his body at best the way he is shaping up . Has been at the head of the most un-successful outfit in the competition over the last ten years , Michael knows what it is like at the top and what it takes to get there , would be fantastic for Thursfield/Mc Guane etc . Gaspars leadership qualities have been at best , questionable

Jay Schulz - shaping better as a key forward

Ray hall - has really shown us this year that he does not cut the mustard , must MUST be looking elsewhere for key backmen . Bling Freddy can see that . Been given every opportunity to show his worth this year and has not come up

Will Thursfield - Played only a handfull of games but shows enormous promise . The last thing this boy needs is to line up , round one next year , with the pressure of having to hold down the number one key defensive post coming back from a shocker of a knee reco. .. Mal Michaels presence would be fantastic for Will in that regard , it would buy the kid some time and the long term benefits of taking some pressure of him for next couple of years would be enormous .

Luke Mc Guane - still too raw to make a definetive comment about this kid - suffice to say once again , MM`s resence would really help this kid .

Weighing all this up , we "DESPERATELY" need someone of experince to shore up our paper thin defence for the next three years .

If Mal Michael exhibits the qualities that we need ... then we must nail him ... get out there Gregory

Very well said. If we don't add to our backline over the summer we can only look forward to the same sort of results next season against the good teams.

Yep well said, definilty has to be number 1 priority and chase after him hard as a few other clubs would want him too.

Im sure we have a player or 2 that could be thrown into the mix that brisbane would accept, players like Hall, Chaffey, Rodan, even Gaspar himself could be offered

Brisbane may allso need a full back replacement for Mal and Leppitsch, so gaspar could even a short term fix for them, they could loose mal for nothing if he retires, so if we offered gaspar they might take it.

They took fixter who is a dud so rodan is a chance too.

Mal would allow us to free up joel and pat bowden, and preferably playing thursfield on the 2nd tall and Hall to take the 3rd tall if sides like St Kilda has the big targets up forward, and this leaves AK to do what he does best and that is go 3rd man up, and sort of be the general down back and sneak up the ground more.

Some could argue the same could be done if we just used schulz, gaspar etc down back but schulz looks the goods as a leading FF and gaspar just doesnt have the body to go with the big players now

So many times you see teams that are able to control the big forward but it allways seems to me that we allways get the bags kicked on us by players like Thompson, Gehrig, Hall, Fevola, Bradshaw, Llyod, these guys allways strike fear into me when we come up against there respective teams.

We could have a 30 pt lead going into the last qtr but then have somone like one of those big guys kick 4 or 5, like the time how we where beating essendon and we looked pretty well home then lucas bags those 4 goals in the qtr was it and nearly snuck past us

what a great idea.. i love the guy.. love to see him in tiger colours for a couple of years to help out the young backmen..
best idea someone has come up with for a while.. good stuff IDGAF:thumbsu:

might get 2 years out of him.
Our biggest problem this year has been our f/b.
If the price is right - yes, but i don't want richmond trading pick 1 or 2 for him

I agree fully IDGAF, but I ask, would you be willing to give up our first round pick for him?

I probably would, but I doubt the coaching staff would be. Second round and a player such as Rodan, who has potential but isnt doing anything for us sounds reasonable.

But yes, just on the topic of getting him to our club, what you have outlined is true. Some strong defensive leadership and a player to take the big names would be perfect, even if it is only relativly short term.

would be a great get, but as been mentioned need to 110% sure that he has the fire in his belly to want to play, but then what could we trade for him?

Woud have to be the player who suits us most, out all teh players rumoured to be moving somewhere else in the off season.

We need him. Graham was excellent for us last year, and we missed an extra tall down there badly this year.

Mal Michael, a 3 time preimiership player would be perfect for a season or 2.

summed it up well, what price?....Not sure R 1 pick would be market value for 29yo R 2 and a player perhaps, something like that or an exchange of draft pix Id like to see him in a tiger jumper but not at the expense of our first 2 pix in what is amounting to a quality pool of talent

How many Brisbane games have you seen this year? Fixter has had a very solid year. He is not a dud at all. Hall, Chafey, Rodan, Gaspar :D :D , we won't be worrying with them - you all know that. Mal will be retiring anyway unfortunately.

Well posted as usual IDGAF. Bold sums up my feelings perfectly.

We need two near 30 years olds like a hole in the head.
We've shown this year we can build our own list of kids
And if we want to add some depth we can also do that by looking at players in the 22 to 26 year age group (whoever they may be) who come out contract.
Going back to the Frawley days of recruiting if we want Aker and Michael, despite how good they've been.

Defineately not Kurtis

My hunch is he won`t come all that expensive . Small matter though of one year of a current contract still to honour which may complicate things .

I would not want to get both of them for the reasons Froars outlined but he would be much more important to us going forward than Aker ... as much as i love Aker

Time will tell, The Lions have all the aces given he is still contracted so hardly let him go for peanuts.

Need to be mindful in not deviating from a plan that invests heavily in talented youth, any departure from that is a setback..refer to Geelong and Ottens. The other point to note is that someone simply doesn't fall into the role of teacher/mentor by virtue of being a good player. From reports over the years and his reputation at Collingwood, wouldn't think there'd be too much value in that part of the deal.

In a nutshell, taking eyes off the long term vision and securing quick fixes is laced with danger, rarely comes off. Father times tells us that both Aker and MM would be lucky to play 30 games ea over next 2 seasons....that in itself spells DANGER

I was actually thinking this yesterday after the game because he said he was either coming down to Melbourne to retire or play so I think he would be a real chance to play for us next year

Not deviating from the game plan ..... not a quick fix .

Collingwood was a loooong time ago .

Plugging a "GAPING" hole whilst giving younsters time to develop . It gets said adnausium Bo , talls take time to develop . Our lot are barely out of Kinder and our experinced ones down back are either shot or no good .

Hypothetical Bo ... say Gaspar calls it a day , where does that leave us ?

The comparison to Ottens is a ridiculous one pal , go away and re-think that one if you want to bolster an arguement . Not going to be offering 2 first round draft picks for him are we . We are not in the "premiership" window looking for that extra ace in the pack Geelong were . Totally different situation .

and the leading sentence in the original post ..."if he is in the right headspace" .... not assuming for one minute that on face value he is going to everything we are looking for.... no doubt there would be an exhaustive process to gauge his worth to us .

I don't really want someone at the club who has nothing to prove and might just go through the motions to play out his career. Graham wanted to prove Hawthorn wrong, Cameron wanted to prove he was not finished. Blumfield? Wanted to improve his golf handicap.

They love Michael with the Lions. Not as though they are rejecting him or telling him he is not up to it. The opposite really, bending over backwards to get him to stay.
