Why does he feel the need to snap the ball when he is running into an open goal directly in front say 30 - 35 metres out? You have got to love it:thumbsu:

I spoke of how meaningful Milney has been to me and my wife, Karen in this thread. He has been able to bring so much into our lives.

One thing we both comment on is inability to kick properly and consistently using conventional drop punts. He is a shocker. Possibly the worst kick in the AFL if this was his only kicking option.

No - at some time in the development of Milney he found a better way - maybe not better for most people, possibly not better for anyone else in the world but him. This better way was to always snap off the side off his boot.

As football changed and teams could no longer carry players with one string to their bow, Milney changed. He got better, but in the process he got worse. He added strings to his bow, but they weren't anything special. His added skills allowed him to contribute in the midfield, and he learned to have a defensive role up forward, but neither of these skills were better than what a hundred other kids could offer. He also learned to kick longer and has kicked goals from outside 50m.

What a lot of people whose direct influence on Milney failed to realise what made Milney so special was his inability to do many things in the conventional method. So he became very very good at doing things in his own unconventional way. A freak of sorts.

Learning how to do things like everybody else was great for Milney, but it also meant that he wasn't so freaky.

I hope that he has gone the full circle. That he has added those other skills to his repertoire, and now has gone back to being the freak who snaps, but can also tackle and pass to team mates as well.

He's a lot more accurate with the snap, he seems to have developed some technique issues kicking conventionally.

He hasn't always been shocking when it comes to the drop punt, had the highest accuracy at the saints for set shots at goal back in '04. When he started getting run through the midfield was when his problems with the drop punt developed. Perhaps an injury, but I mentioned at the time that I thought it could have been fitness related.

Tell you what, I don't care how he kicks them, inside or outside of the boot, sidewards, backwards or forwards. When you're at the game & he slots one through & he arcs around with fist blazing and guttural scream blaring, eyeing you off in the crowd, it tightens your heart & blisters your throat as you scream back at him in approval with fists raised to the gods. Long live him & how he can lift a team is awesome!

Milne plays football like a child. That's fundamentally why he's not liked by most other opposition fans.

He cherry-picks off the back of contests, he lets himself and his team down by not doing the right defensive things, and he can't kick properly. He has no left side, and won't kick straight drop-punts, exactly like me when I was like 9 years old. He's good at the snap, because he can't run onto his left like most AFL footballers, but instead turns 270 degrees and kicks it over his shoulder off the right peg. It's not an amazing ability he has, it's an inability that causes him to do it.

Don't get me wrong. Milne is an "effective" footballer. I don't like him at all, but he gets the job done, and good luck to Saints fans who love him.

But it's not an unsolvable mystery why he kicks like that. He is a lazy, selfish footballer who hasn't developed new skills since he was a kid.

But he is toilet trained.

He cherrypicks off the back of contests??? Well excuse me isnt that what a small crumbing forward is supposed to do?? So what does Eddy Betts do? Oh wait, hang on hes a carlton player so he must be a champion:rolleyes:

We dont care if other club "supporters" dont like Milney,, Saints supporters do and that is all that matters imho

No, Betts is no 'champion'. I think he works harder than Milne does these days, though, and gets his hands dirtier. It's hard to respect Milne and his massive "I'm the hero" celebrations when all he does is capitalise on his teammates' efforts.

Very true! I didn't post it to be popular, just in response to the question and to stir a little. We are playing in a fortnight, after all! ;)

We have plenty of players who work hard and get dirty. That dosn't help us much.
If Milney is honestly lazy or woriking hard, it is absolutely incredible that he is the 13th highest goal kicker in the AFL this year. Are you telling me he could work a bit harder and get the Coleman? :D

Milne smells

That is all

I am glad that the Blues supporters hate Milne, and I hope that next round he gives you even more reasons to hate him.
If he smells I hope that his reek offends the Blues supporters sitting near the goals.

Milne is what he is, If you don't barack for the Saints you don't have to like it. :D

I think Milney's in the mood to equal his record Friday week...

We've scored above 100 for the last like 12 games against Carlton, so finally, we will see attacking football whether Ross wants it or not!

Do you really? Do you think the Saints' underachievement so far is because they have so many guys working hard? Did Dal and Milney get dropped for their hard work? I'd suggest the Saints could do with a big family sized serve of hard work, cos too much is left to too few.

I think Milne looks after his own goalkicking just fine. But he scores a lot based off the incredible work of Riewoldt, etc. If Milney worked as hard, maybe he'd create more goals for others, too.

I'm not randomly trolling or meaning to start a brawl here. I just think Milne is a very very long way from "the complete" small forward. Why couldn't Milne be like Paul Chapman, say? If he was tear-assing around laying tackles, setting up his teammates and running his opponent ragged, he would be more like that. Instead he's fresh as a daisy at the end of every game cos all he's done is kicked 3 from the goalsquare. Yeh, you can say that's "doing his job", but I think he could do a lot more.

Chapman is not a true crumbing forward as Milne is. Chapman's physique allows him to play 1 on 1 and provide a solid lead up target up the ground and lay crunching tackles. Milne is the best small forward in the game in terms of reading the ball off a pack. He's been held back due to pack situations not happening enough in our forward line due to slow ball movement.

Milne scores a lot due to his incredible ability to read the play and freakish goal sense. Saying he scores off the 'hard work of Riewoldt' is like saying the Fev only scores due to the hard work of Judd or Stevens getting him the ball. Trying to dismiss his goals as cheap is pointless and the same argument could be made for most small forwards if only people weren't blinded by their hate for Milney. He might be a one dimensional player, but that one dimension wins us games.

I still get to hate him, right? :p

No... Lol.

Actually I think you are allowed to hate him... Just don't come on a Saints board and say it:)

I hate every player in just about every team... Especially Freo, but I don't go on their board to tell them... Mainly because I would feel dumber for the conversation:thumbsu:

He'll no doubt kick 9 against the Blues, because we've got nobody who matches up well on him :o.

I still get to hate him, right? :p

Put Eddie Betts on him, cause he's a soft scungy little prick too.

He's not awful. I just feel he does the easy things and not the hard things.

Yes you should. :D

We all know about his flaws but at this stage of his career we can only expect him to improve a little bit ( if at all, he about 28yo. ) and the decisions within the club will be whether to play him or not.
It was thought that Schneider would pressure his spot on the side, but Schneider has not been anywhere near as effective. There are many people in the AFL that I would like to have in our forward line rather than Milne, but they are not on St Kilda's list and he is firmly in our best 22 until something better comes along.
