Autopsy Saints forget how to kick a ball and lose to Hawthorn.

Not because he was anything special in this game, but want to give a shout out to the Hammer, for the job he’s done since he went back to defence, after one of the Hawks posters suggested on the main board that he’s just a “trier”, who’s on par with how James Blanck was for them!

Despite the fact he played forward for at least two of our games when Howard was back, Hammer is 22nd in the AFL for intercepts, and 14th for marks.

And when he played forward against Freo the first time, and Carlton, he had only 1 intercept possession in each of those games. So to still be 22nd in the AFL for that stat is pretty outstanding.

If you exclude those two games, where he was playing forward, he’s averaging 6.42 intercepts per game.

B McKay- 5.4
T Stewart- 5.8
J Battle- 6.06
S May- 6.15
A Caminiti- 6.42
T Barrass- 6.47
C Comben- 6.46
C Wilkie- 6.56

That’s some fair company. Especially since we’ve only played 5 games against teams in the bottom 9. So he hasn’t had many games against crap teams to feast on. And he’s only done one full preseason, none training in defence.

And he’s only one mark off equal-11th in the AFL for marks for the year.

He is putting together a good career in defense now. His only drawback is really one on one defending which so far has only been exploited by ultra talls like Mackay and Darcy. Give him time though and I think he will learn that aspect.

Hastie will be ok. Reminded me of Gilbert & his turnovers sometimes by foot.

Play the kids. It’s exciting to watch 👌
I would imagine it being his first game back in the 1's, he would've had been experiencing a bit of anxiety. After his first turnover he was probably in his head too much and overthinking everything. He showed that when he took that mark and weaved through traffic out of defence that he has good footy instincts. Hopefully he can build his confidence off that.
The more he plays the better he'll be for it.

Yea watched lots of his VFL. I don’t think the turnovers were indicative of his actual skill level. His kicking has been good, at VFL level and Borris likes him. That late play where he weaved through traffic was elite, really Gower footed. Shows he has composure under fatigue. Let’s not act like he’s had a decent run at it. Sub many times, always the first to be dropped. He needs a string of games.

I was livid after the third turnover, but he just kept cracking in and didn't go into his shell. Was really pleased with how he went about it, and with Webster hurt, he should get a good run at it now.

Had 27 and kicked 3 goals
If you put a geelong jumper on him the media would be claiming how they've drafted and developed another gun and are ahead of the competition with development and drafting
Great pick by Dalrymple
Hey don't get me wrong. He's been a ****ing jet and really come on and you're absolutely spot on.

I'm just saying he might be what we hoped billings would be. HF who can run through the midfield

It's an absolute outstanding selection

Might need some time to learn to play the game to an acceptable level before you know, coming in to a side in the second tier comp, no matter how high one might be rated. Especially so when flying in from the other side of the world. Is to say, have a little patience, we're not that shit at our job.
Yep. I’d be surprised if they didn’t give him minimum 4 weeks even solely on fitness, but needs to learn what the ball looks like and where the goals are. If he pings a calf over doing training or a game or gets crashed from behind not knowing where some VFL nut has come from and they’d never hear the end of it …
