No sorry my mistake.
He fell just outside the window by a month, but like Swallow GC had originally been keen on taking him with one of its first 3 picks and having him train with them early.
But the club then informed him he wouldn't be drafted by them with one of its first 3 picks. In one article it mentioned that was a reason why he stagnated a bit in 2010, because he had been set on moving with his mates and playing footy with the GC Suns.

Yeah see my self correction above.
He was told by GC that he would not be taken with one of their first 3 picks, unlike Swallow. So instead of moving, training and playing VFL with them was stuck in the WAFL.

I'm not sure on the validity of that comment, however I am very much aware he had his heart set on going to the gold coast. Even as a WA boy and a WC supporter - his preference was the GC.

The validity?
My original post was discussing how GC and GWS have made out like bandits with the best crop of WA talent in a while. Poor memory made me think that they passed over Darling for a pre-list (as one of the 12 17 year olds), but it was actually them telling him he would not be taken as a 17 year old, unlike Swallow to move early to the GC, then Melbourne to play in the VFL (as a confirmed top 3 pick).

Perhaps poorly written - what I mean was hadn't heard that some comment, but i was aware he had his heart set on GC and thought that they would be recruting him. However i hadn't heard he was promised a top 3 selection.

I don't know if he was promised, more that seemed to be the prevailing opinion at the time (the GC had definitely spoken about him being under consideration). Not sure whether they approached him or his manager directly or it was played out through the media but at the time, the deadline and which (if any players) they would seek approval for was a big deal.
