Missed Trades at Dead Line

Caddy to Essendon/any Melbourne club

I don't think this was ever going to happen. GC wanted a high pick, and GWS has (almost) all of them and wasn't going to let them go.

A suitable (not some B grade average/spud) player along with a decent pick would have helped get the deal done though surely. Had they offered a decent player to any other club, they in turn would have been willing to part with picks to which ever club neccessary. Im not at all suprised that Gold Coast knocked them back and told them to make the neccessary arrangements and come back with a better offer.

Reportedly, GC changed their minds midway through the negotiations. Last week it was two compos, but today it was a top 10.

I wonder if the AFL would ever consider having a period of an hour or two after the official cut-off for late trades to be resolved - maybe requiring both clubs involved in a trade for a specific player to notify the AFL that they are working on a deal but need a little more time.

Maybe only allow it if both clubs want the extension and any trade can only include the player nominated and draft picks.

They had OVER a week to sort things out, if its not sorted by then it won't be sorted.

Or clubs too long play hardball, like Melbourne with Bate, not letting him go even after getting Clark and rejecting all offers from Bulldogs when he will most likely spend his next year on contract in the reserves.

Saints not offloading anyone basically, Dawson to freo was one thrown up.

The Caddy one didn't need more time, it needed Essendon to offer a better deal instead of trying to milk it for sympathy based on Caddy's personal situation hoping GC would just let him go. Highly rated youngster taken last year at pick 7, and they were offering up Pick 19 and another pick?....

Great idea, wouldn't hurt anyone.

They had 8 days!

Ashcroft said the Caddy deal was made more difficult because they were only dealing with Essendon.
Essendon implied they were looking after the kid but by him saying only Essendon he stays at GC.

I understand that and in all reality trade week should only be two or at most three days as the clubs just draw it out to the death with the result that once the main deals are done there is inevitably some late potential trades that run out of time.

So shorten the trade period because it's too long but allow a small window for peripheral trades to be finalised. So as an example, Fremantle who spent a lot of time trying to get a deal for Clark but want to talk to the Saints about Dawson can go to the AFL and say we need a couple more hours to finalise a trade with St Kilda who confirm they are interested. The AFL grants them a small extension to finalise the trade on the condition that no other clubs or players are brought into the mix. You could also limit this to one arrangement per club.

McGuane to Brisbane. I really wanted this to happen, regardless of which round it was.

Brisbane confirmed early in trade week that this was all rumour, we were never looking at McGuane.

Can't believe Melbourne didn't accept pick 39 for Bate. Sheer lunacy.

I can't believe we offered pick 39 for Bate, now THAT is sheer lunacy.

And to be honest, the extended trading period worked very well IMO. Some of the big name trades went down days before the end (Gunson, Clark) leaving plenty of time today for those fiddly, small trades. I was skeptical of the need for a longer trade period but the fact that not all the big trades were done on the last day and that all the trades that were rumoured / expected were completed seems to support the AFL's move to extend trade week.

True, and trade week is apparently only going to to get longer. Pick 39 for Bate is crazy, but what were the Demons thinking in rejecting that? They're already going to have Clark, Watts, Jurrah and co, without trying to find room for Bate.

It's well documented now that GC wanted only a top 10 pick, but that only became evident very late into trade week. Melbourne came to the table with good compo picks and were rejected.

This is key because GWS have 8 of the first 10 draft spots and were under instruction to keep them and not trade them on.
This left only Port and Brissy to deal with making it almost impossible to get them to part with their top 10.

I say lock them all in a room and give them 1 day to trade. Sh!t or get off the pot.

The problem with that scenario is the third party involved in any trade deal - the player(s).

It's not unheard of for a player to be called overseas on holiday to be asked to be traded.

Bit hard to do that all in 8 hours.

The better solution is to simply lower everyone's expectation and hype around trade week. Hell we have an AFLTradeWeek radio set up for it.

Who knows - perhaps the trade month mooted for next year will be a blessing.
