I think that there is a good chance that there is a succession plan in place where Buckley will take over as senior coach. If this is the case then Mick should retire gracefully but only when Bucks is ready to take over. Buckley seems to be pretty clear in his decision to have at least one year as an assistant coach outside of Collingwood so if that is the case then Malthouse will have at least two years left. Unless Buckley changes his mind but I don't see Buckley as the type to do that, especially seeing he has been very public with announcing his plans.

I agree with Bloben. He is going no where at the moment but if Bucks steps up he will move on. I have no faith in anyone else out there to do a better job.

What would Buckley bring to the club? He has been under MM for such a long time, wouldn't he adopt MM's tactics?

Why?

Buckley has his own brain. He wouldn't just blindly follow what Malthouse did, he would have his own ideas and theories.

the fact that Buckley stated he wanted to do at least a year under another coach says he won't be the same, nor that he wwould start in 2010. I may be wrong but Bucks is pretty patient and determined so I believe that he will start anywhere from 2011.

I actually think he will retire.. rather than be sacked

We still have a young side and we are looking at a flag within a few years.

I think Malthouse will be given the chance to see the last couple of crops of kids play a role in that

If this is micks last year i would prefer we hire Brad scott, hardwick or even scott burns over buckley.

I love Buckley but i have been scared from shaw we cant just hire a collingwood hero to be our coach without at least being an assistant for a year

I'd rather hold out and see how Voss goes rather. Sounds strange but same era. I can see your point though.

I know this puts me out of favour but I beleive in MM and his abilities. For this reason I think that when we see a replacement for him (whether it's Bucks or someone else) MM will be retained in the football manager role (or something similar), why on earth would we let all that knowledge and experience just walk away if we can avoid it.
Okay, now you can go back to slagging him off now. (and probably me too for praising MM)

I think what you say makes sense. MM almost seems to will good players to greatness at times, so it would be a shame to lose his influence altogether. I'd say he'll have 2 more years, then Bucks.

Opti, I don't think Bucks will go the way of Tony Shaw; he's much too clever, cautious and capable. I also think, after reading his book, that he's a man who knows his own limitations. If he doesn't think he can be a great coach, he won't take the job.

Please don't compare Bucks to either Voss or Tony Shaw you only have to listen to Bucks for a few moments to realise that he is smarter (especially footy-wise) than either of those attention seeking clowns. He's a better communicator (by a country mile) than Shawry and (despite the FIGJAM nickname from his early days) he is not likely to disappear up his own nether regions like Voss.

Long bow to presume Buckley will coach Collingwood, most ex-players coach somewhere else. Not being a killjoy but if people expect he will coach Collingwood one day and he does take an offer somewhere else would be disappointing to them. Who knows what the future will bring. ;)

Interesting that Buckley wrote in his recent book that he thought the ideal way to move into coaching was a playing career at 1 club, a coaching apprenticeship at a 2nd club then senior coach at a third club.

He maybe looking at Thompson and Clarkson when he says that

Yeah, I'll be disappointed but accepting so long as he's not gone for too long and he does come home. I don't think the idea of Bucks as Collingmood coach is drawing a long bow, every time he speaks his intelligence and understanding is obvious. I don't recall ever hearing anyone say that about Shawry, he got a shot because of his dedication to the team as a captain and player. Despite the disastrous outcome, I can understand the club giving him a shot it was just a shame that he lasted so long. (Bucks doesn't agree with that by the way.) Gee a bloke with so little real football talent was still able to earn 313 games by sheer work ethic, you had to give him a chance.

I don't think he will ever coach Collingwood. I think it is all presumption and wishful thinking by supporters.

Some people are going to be very disappointed around here I think.

I think far more Collingwood people support MM than don't.
A small minority get a bit noisy, but they never put up any viable alternatives.

One thing is for sure, that Buckley would definitely be outright and confrontational towards the team he coaches in terms of criticism, which would be excellent in the long run for such a young list that we have at the moment. If we're going to get him on board, do it sooner rather than later.
