Just thought I'd put this together and see what people think, I do one every year but it's the first time I've posted it on here so I hope you enjoy!
Pick 1 - St Kilda: Christian Petracca - Big strong bodied mid/forward, started this season as a half forward but during the year and especially in the national championships he blossomed into a powerful dominate midfielder. He will fit nicely straight into the saints midfield group with Dunstan, Ackers, Billings, Steven and Armitage giving them great versatility. Worthy number 1 pick
Pick 2 - Melbourne: Angus Brayshaw - Probably the most damaging player in this draft, consistently gets big numbers of disposals and dominates games, skilful by both hand and foot, composed and a decent overhead mark, Brayshaw will slot straight into Melbourne's midfield.
Pick 3 - Melbourne: Paddy McCartin - Big Paddy McCartin is a key forward, already at 196cm and 98kgs he is a massive prospect. McCartin is great on the lead with super sprint pace over 20 meters, he's super strong and uses his body well in marking contests, along with Jesse Hogan they could form a combative forward line for Melbourne in the coming years.
Pick 4 - GWS: Peter Wright - 2 meter Peter is the perfect replacement for Tom Boyd, i'll even make the call that he will be better for GWS and their structure than Boyd was. Big Pete has played most of his footy as a ruckman big in the last few years has moved forward and just torn games to shreds, at his massive height its hard for him not to drop marks, his great below his knees and is a super set shot. Perfect fit for GWS as they struggled this season with a ruck/forward, this way when Patton comes back from injury it allows Cameron/Patton and Wright to have great flexibility. Also allowing Mumford to rest more often as Wright is a great tap ruckman.
Pick 5 - Collingwood: Lachie Weller - All the whisper and rumor has been that Collingwood will take Jayden Laverde and yes that might happen, I just feel Lachie Weller gives the Pies more security and consistency, Lachie Weller is almost Dayne Beams' replacement in a sense, his a clean compact midfielder with great skills, more of an outside player at the moment he would be able to move more into contested ball in the coming years. He has solid pace and is combative and determined at the contest, Lachie Weller would allow the Pies to keep the same game plan and just replace Beams' name with Weller's
Pick 6 - GWS: Jake Lever - GWS lost alot of key position players this year especially in defence. Jake Lever is the best key defender in this draft, injured with a knee all of 2014 he is still in high draft contention because he is just simply that good. He could slot into GWS' best 22 and play every game next year taking some pressure off Joel Patful and Phil Davis.
Pick 7 - GWS: Sam Durdin - Once again I've gone with a big key defender at GWS, looking at their list it is really the only huge hole they have, getting both Durdin and Lever would give GWS back their great depth with key position players and also take huge strain off their captain Phil Davis. Durdin also has the ability to play through the ruck and up forward. He is better suited to defence but it is always nice to have the flexibility.
Pick 8 - Gold Coast: Hugh Goddard - Probably a bit higher than most people would have him but I really like Goddard at the Suns. Goddard is a big tall genuine swingman, he can play both ends of the ground extreamely well and has shown that multiple times. Goddard played the back half of the year in defence and really flourished, he took big name scalpes including Darcy Moore, Peter Wright and Paddy McCartin. Gold Coast really only have 2 key defenders in Steven May and Rory Thompson, drafting Goddard would not be a quick fix option but if something happened to either of them Goddard would be a nice easy replacement.
Pick 9 - Collingwood: Darcy Moore - Son of a dual brownlow medalist. Darcy Moore is a freak, able to play both ends and destroy games. Don't expect Moore to play 22 games next season, his body isn't quite right for AFL just yet, but come 2-3 years, he will be a super player.
Pick 10 - Geelong: Jayden Laverde - With the departure of Allen Christensen and Travis Varcoe Geelong need some midfield replacements. Laverde can play anywhere, arguably the Bontepelli of this draft, Laverde has great pace, super foot skills and is a genuine x factor. Geelong are the best in the league in developing kids. With 1 or 2 pre seasons Laverde could be ready to step straight into AFL and play regular footy.
Pick 11 - West Coast: Jarrod Pickett - West Coast cry out for an absolute superstar and this is probably as close as they are going to get. Probably my favourite player of the draft, Pickett is a cross between Cyril Rioli and Chris Yarran. He is an absolute jet and will fix West Coast's problem of outside run and genuine x factor.
Pick 12 - Richmond: Liam Duggan - Duggan is alot like Angus Brayshaw just without the ability to kick off both feet, a super elite kick and a running freak, Duggan is a perfect fit for Richmond, he gives them the ability to leave Dustin Martin forward more to do what he does best.
Pick 13 - Fremantle: Connor Blakely - A somewhat of a left field choice here, Freo seem to need key position players, I'm thinking they need to be able to win the ball out of the middle more often. In step Connor Blakely. A super contested ball winner, getting Blakely allows Mundy to go more outside and be more damaging, bonus for Freo is Blakely is a WA boy so no go home factor.
Pick 14 - Adelaide: Alex Neal-Bullen - A SA boy, Neal-Bullen is Adelaides back up pick to Sam Durdin if he doesn't fall through. Neal-Bullen is a pure inside mid with some classy foot skills. He would fit nicely into that strong midfield group Adelaide already have.
Pick 15 - Gold Coast: Caleb Marchbank - insert caption from pick 8. Marchbank is more of a lock down defender to Goddard.
Pick 16 - Noth Melbourne: Nakia Cockatoo - Cockatoo has been injured all of 2014 bar the draft combine and the all stars match on AFL grand final day. Boy did Nakia not disappoint, starring in the all stars game earning best afield with 20 disposals and in the draft combine Cockatoo showed his explosive power and elite skill dominating the sprints, jumping and kicking tests. Cockatoo is a damaging midfielder who reminds me of Adam Goodes, North will most likely get a steal here at 16.
Pick 17 - Essendon: Reece McKenzie - a monster of a key forward, 196cm and 100+ kilos he already looks like Tom Hawkins. McKenzie tore the TAC Cup to shreds in the back half of the season kicking bags of 10, 7 and 8. Essendon scream out for support to Joe Daniher, McKenzie doesn't have the tank of consistency to play consistent AFL just yet but in the coming years he will develop into an unstoppable figure.
Pick 18 - Sydney: Isaac Heeny - probably the most complete player in this draft, Melbourne bidding pick 2 for him just shows how good he is. Will play regular game time at Sydney next season, watch for Heeny to explode onto the scene
Pick 19 - Carlton: Tom Lamb - think of Marco Paperone, Justin Westhoff and the likes Tom Lamb is a 194cm wingman/key forward, earlier in the year considered to be a top 5 pick Lamb had a rotten luck of form. Testing well at the combine Lamb stil has great potential and if picked into the right system he could really blossom into a really good player.
Pick 20 - Essendon: Toby McLean - Essendon look to be building a small forward line to be feared. In comes Jamie Elliot, oops, I mean Toby McLean, almost the same identical player, same height, same weight, same skills, its uncanning how similar these two are, Toby McLean made huge steps forward inn 2014 to come right into calculations for an early pick.
Pick 21 - St Kilda: Jordan De Gooey - Following on with the trend of drafting high quality midfielders, De Gooey looks to be a Jimmy Bartel type players, really versatile and a super over head mark given his size at 187cm, his contested ball work has really improved in 2014, him and Jack Billings could share a half forward flank each next season, both very skilled and damaging marks and kicks.
Pick 22 – St Kilda: Paul Ahern – Really damaging small/medium forward, he kicked 4 goals in a Championship game this year, he has a very high footy IQ and would add to the great kids St Kilda are looking to draft.
Pick 23 – GWS: Kyle Langford – Probably the weirdest player of this draft, Langford is tall but rarely plays key position, his more of a running rebounding half back, he has real x factor but really struggles for consistency, at GWS he would get to learn from Phil Davis and Heath Shaw as he plays some sort of a position in-between them.
Pick 24 – GWS: Jack Steele – An overager overlooked in last years draft due to injury Steele showed how good he is this year with All Australian honors in the Championships, he also smashed the bejebus out of the 3km time trial at this years combine, Jack Steele looks to partner Josh Kelly on a wing at GWS and add some real damaging gut running to the side.
Pick 25 – North Melbourne: Touk Miller – think of a Jarman Impey clone, Touk Miller was the captain of Vic Metro this season, Miller is a running small forward/defender that could add real depth to North Melbourne’s list in 2015.
Pick 26 – Western Bulldogs: Dean Gore – a SA boy, Dean Gore is a really skillful inside mid, super foot skills and great composure, Gore would fit nicely at the Bulldogs with the departure of Griffen.
Pick 27 – Western Bulldogs: Harrison Wigg – Dubbed the best kick of the draft all season Wigg didn’t disapoint earning MVP honors for SA in the championships, He played a quarter back role setting them up by foot, I have seen Wigg make some ridiculous passes into spots that the likes of only Matt Suckling and Jared Polec could do, Wigg really doesn’t have much else to him but he should get drafted on his kicking ability alone. He would slot straight into the Bulldogs side as they really have no designated kicker in the side.
Pick 28 – Carlton: Clem Smith – was the name on everyones lips last season earning all Australian honors as an underager Smith had a horrible season all year round. Pick 28 may be a push for him but there is one thing about Clem Smith that sets him apart from the rest. He is a competitive beast, seen to be the next Byron Pickett, he is a little man with a big heart, puts his body on the line every contest and never second guesses himself, Clem Smith would slot into Carlton with the departure of Jeff Garlett and Mitch Robinson.
Pick 29 – Gold Coast: Damien Cavka – Damien Cavka is a running machine, a real outside accumulator, something Gold Coast are missing is someone to just get more of the ball, Cavka fits that mould.
Pick 30 – Collingwood: Corey Ellis – Ellis is a really skillful player, struggles abit for consistancy and playing 4 quarters but with a development system like Collingwood have Ellis could blossom into a solid midfielder in the coming years.
Pick 31 – Hawthorn: Brayden Maynard – Maynard is a super well rounded player, playing most of his junior footy along half back Maynard moved into the midfield this season and flourished, when Maynard gets the ball he is wonderful, only problem is he doesn’t get enough of the ball to tear games to pieces, in a system like Hawthorn they would develop him to play a role and do what he does best.
Pick 32 – West Coast: Jarrod Garlett – If this happens West Coast fans should cry with tears of joy, Garlett is Lewis Jetta/Stephan Hill/Brad Hill type player, he could slot into West Coasts best 22 and play 22 games next season really helping their line breaking x factor issue.
Pick 33 – Richmond: Connor Menadue – Menadue is a dashing half backer, a nice size at 187 he is only skinny skill and will need to put on some weight to play regular footy he has real speed and nice foot skills.
Pick 34 – Fremantle: Matt Hammlemann – a long shot, the big Queensland forward if he falls to Fremantle could solve some real depth and key forward relief to Matt Pavlich, Hammlemann has the capability to destroy games, a championship game this year he had 12 marks, 26 disposals and kicked 4 goals, at 197 and 88 he possess huge upside.
Pick 35 – Adelaide: Peter Bampton – Bampton has been playing senior SANFL footy since he was 16 and not for a slacking team but for Norwood, the most dominate team going around, Bampton is what you would call an old fashion footy player, contested ball is his strong suit and my god does he use it, he has a funny kicking style but makes up for it by winning the ball for his team.
Pick 36 – North Melbourne: Hugh Beasly – Have seen his name been thrown around lately and all word is that he is a solid key defensive option something North really struggle for.
Pick 37 – Sydney: Oscar McDonald – One of the better key defensive options in this draft, is the brother of Melbourne’s Tom McDonald he could add real depth to Sydney’s list, might even get some game time next season.
Pick 38 – Sydney: Jack Hiscox – What were his parents thinking with a name like that. Nether the less he will be on the Sydney Swans next season and well earned, his 3km time trial alone gets this boy drafted, smashing the record.
Pick 39 – Western Bulldogs: Jackson Nelson – Damaging dashing half back, something the Bulldogs really lack is outside run, Nelson adds that.
Pick 40 – Melbourne: Nathan Drummond – unlucky not to be picked up last season, Drummond went back to the TAC Cup and worked hard showing his desire to play AFL, he will likely be rewarded, he possess to be a great ball winning running option.
Pick 41 – St Kilda: Lucas Webb - Really nifty disposer of the ball, would add good depth to St Kilda’s half back stocks.
Pick 42 – Melbourne: Billy Stretch – A father son option to the Dees that they are gratefully accepting with both hands, Stretch is a really paced half back/wing type.
Pick 43 – Adelaide: Tyler Keitel – Adelaide look to be short in their key defensive stocks and although Keitel isn’t a key defender at first thought he has raw natural ability in the position and could develop into a handy option down back.
Pick 44 – Brisbane: Liam Dawson – An academy player Brisbane are very excited about he is in the mould of Sam Gilbert of St Kilda, really versatile kicker and intercept mark down back or up forward.
Pick 45 – Western Bulldogs: Daniel Howe – Tom Langdon of the 2014 draft, Howe is an overage medium defender with great intercept mark and damaging skills, he could slot straight into the Bulldogs team and play 22 games next season.
Pick 46 – Western Bulldogs: Daniel McKenzie – McKenzie had a super 2014 and draft combine and put himself right into draft contention. A more damaging offensive player with the same sort of skills as Daniel Howe above.
Pick 47 – Geelong: Daniel Capiron – an Andrew Mackie type Geelong seem to keep pulling players to just step straight into the team when players move on, Mackie isn’t getting younger and Capiron could be his replacement in a few years.
Pick 48 – Collingwood: Ed Langdon – Brother of Tom, he plays a completely different role, a small creative forward, Ed has a super high footy IQ and knows where the goals are.
Pick 49 – Hawthorn: Ed Vickers Willis – An awkward key defensive size at 190 Vickers Willis could step in a few seasons with an ageing Hawthorn backline Gibson (31) Lake (32)
Pick 50 – Hawthorn: Sean McLaren – started the season as a ruckman and moved to defence and found his feet very quickly, took on all the big names and held his own, McLaren looks like a big project player and with Hawthorns ageing backline he could learn heaps before they move on.
Pick 51 – West Coast: Francis Watson – An overager, at 186cm he is a nice size, he plays more 4th defender and 4th forward option, has some real tricks in his bag but struggles for consistency.
Pick 52 – Richmond: Jack Lonie – another of these smart small forwards, only a wee man at 174 but his left foot skill makes up for it, late draft gem.
Pick 53 – Melbourne:
Pick 54 – Fremantle:
Pick 55 – Geelong: Jordan Cucino – an outside accumulator type could add depth to Geelong.
Pick 56 – North Melbourne:
Pick 57 – Port Adelaide: Caleb Daniel – the cult hero of the draft, 166cm and 66kgs, he would be the smallest player to play AFL in 40 odd years, does that faze him? No, Daniel is the Gary Ablett of the wee men, he is a competitive beast and has the skill to match, a ferocious tackler and super footy smarts, the only thing standing in the way of Daniel is his height, likely to be overlooked all together it’d be wonderful to see him get a shot. He would be a real fan favourite not to mind a super player.
Pick 58 – Sydney:
Pick 59 – Adelaide:
Pick 60 -
Pick 61 -
Pick 62 -
Pick 63 – Brisbane: Harris Andrews – Academy player, 197cm and 80kgs, he is a huge project player but has great upside.
Pick 64 - Western Bulldogs: Zaine Cordy – Father son and brother of the Bulldogs Ayce, he is a key defender likened to Daniel Talia.
Pick 65 through to 74
Pick 75 – Port Adelaide: Josh Glenn – Mature age half back that said he wasn’t ready for AFL last year, he is back better than last year, still questions over his commitment a late pick would be a steal.
Pick 76 – Sydney: Abe Davis – Big tall academy boy, project player.
West Coast – Alec Waterman – father son, contested ball option that the eagles get for free.
GWS – Jeremy Finlayson – Academy boy, key position prospect.
Brisbane – Josh Clayton – Father son medium half forward type.
Upgraded rookies will slot into all those slots left open towards the back end of the draft.
