Thought I'd kick this off, it was about this time last year that the Call of Duty - Nam thread was started, and people were very sick and tired of Modern Warfare 2.

Rumours for the next game have started to arise, with most of them surrounding the game being a prequel of sorts, that looks at the events prior to the successful Call of Duty 4, and even puts you through the various events of COD 4 and Modern Warfare 2 through a different perspective. This perspective is rumoured to be none other than Ghost's, one of the supporting characters from Modern Warfare 2, best known for his skull-face balaclava, making his appearance unknown.

News (and Rumours) so far:

The latest issue of the UK PlayStation Magazine has printed that insider are suggesting that Infinity Ward's next Modern Warfare title will be a prequel. In that prequel Ghost will star in the lead role for the game. The original rumor began in early January 2011, where unconfirmed rumors claimed that Sledgehammer was already long into production of this prequel.

Still to filed under rumor, Activision nor Sledgehammer has confirmed or denied these claims up to this point. We can look to the future for answers to these questions about the next Call of Duty, but for now, the only things that can be confirmed is Sledgehammer's work on the title. As well as the newly formed Project Beachhead which will further expand the Call of Duty universe.

If we’re getting a Modern Warfare 3 this November, it’s going to come at the cost of an Call of Duty spin-off from the head creator of Dead Space, the Los Angeles Times reported today.

Citing “people familiar with the situation”, the paper says that Infinity Ward, the studio behind the last two Modern Warfares isn’t going to get Modern Warfare 3 done alone. Parent company Activision is enlisting the help of its Sledgehammer Games and Raven studios to make the game.

Infinity Ward’s struggles are believable, given that the founders and dozens of key members of the studio were fired or quit late 2010. Modern Warfare games have usually taken two years to make and that kind of distraction would seem to have delayed such a schedule. Sledgehammer is a new Activision studio headed by two of the top creators behind the horror sci-fi series Dead Space, which is now made without them at rival company EA. Sledgehammer had been working on a Call of Duty of its own, one originally thought to be a third-person game but more recently touted as a first-person shooter. The Times reports that Sledgehammer is working on Modern Warfare 3′s singleplayer with Infinity Ward and that Raven, the studio behind many shooters and action games including last year’s Singularity, is helping with multiplayer.

If Call of Duty fans can remember it was first rumored in November 2009 that Infinity Ward were considering a game solely for Ghost. During Modern Warfare 2‘s launch event in the UK, the voice actor for the game’s Ghost character, Craig Fairbrass, talked about the possible game.

“I did in the last game a voice for a character called Gaz and in this game I’m now voicing a guy called Ghost, who now just got a spin-off comic of his own and they’re talking about another little game to go with it,” Fairbrass told Inside Xbox, “so, I’m quite excited about it. It’s grown and grown and grown.”

It now appears for this rumor to be more realistic as a insider noted that a title for Ghost is in development and will use the Modern Warfare 2 engine.

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

A source within the industry who has previously leaked other information when I was writing for Xboxic (leaks include confirming Black Op's March 2010, Naming Kinect before E3 May 2010, First Gears 3 Images April 2010, amongst others) has informed me that an upcoming Call of Duty title from Infinity Ward will not be created on an all new game engine.

It has been alleged that Infinity Ward are creating a game that will focus on the character Ghost who first appeared in Modern Warfare 2, this game will centre around the events leading up to the war in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare as a prequel, and then further reveal how Ghost first became a member of Task Force 141 based on the comic book stories written by David Lapham.

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

I never really found the campaigns of the COD's that I've played to garner my attention that much. Usually start it off with maybe 1-2 hours just to get used to the flow of the game and then just online all the way. Then I might come back to it someday if I'm up to it but not usually.

I'm not too fussed about the story side of it. Hopefully IW do some proper bug testing before launch.....

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

the only thing i'm looking forward to with this game is having net able to compete in one on ones fairly again online...

hopefully it can pull off the holy grail of balance, variety and quality connections but i'm not going to hold my breath.

single player will probs be decent but dumb like mw2...

please prove me wrong random teams working on this game.

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

hhmmmmmmmm 3-4 different Devs workin on the same title, could be a total disaster.
I think people are just overloaded with fps these days that nothing really stands out anymore, It will still sell crazy amounts but the COD franchise is dying a slow death in my eyes.

No Sarcasm :)

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

In before sales of several bazillion copies
Thats the problem, even if it's a big steaming pile of shit, it's still going to sell a shitload of copies

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

If MW3 is confirmed, this will break the records set by MW2 and Black ops

Even BF3 won't be able to stop the juggernaut, it may slow it slightly (as they will be due around the same time)

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

Over saturation much? I really enjoyed MW2, but i have no desire to buy it again year after year. I skipped call of duty 2k10 and will be skipping the 2k11 iteration. Maybe if they focus on some different IP's and perhaps release a new game every 2 or 3 years then the game might avoid getting stale like it has to myself and alot of other gamers. Not that it matters much it will still sell a billion copies.

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

im kind of leaning towards 'getting sick of CoD' games now. i mean, a year is hardly a lengthy period of time to really embed yourself into the MP imo, unless you're a hardcore player. especially when they release a few map packs.

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

id like to see another game where the battle zones are in modern western countries like in mw2... so tired of middle eastern settings, jungle is boring and ww2 has been done to death...

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

Looks like it might not be a prequel.

Here’s a quickie but a goodie.

Big news on the Call of Duty front today; Activision’s sent over a set of dog tags (below) with a link to the website findmakarov.com. The bloody tags also included the message “end the war” along with the details of Sheperd, one of the villains from 2009′s Modern Warfare 2.

What’s on the web you ask? A countdown, currently sitting at just under 5 days. A quick flash of the Modern Warfare 2 villain appears when you load up the page. You may well remember that Makarov made it all the way through the last game. Guess that’s a Modern Warfare 3 reveal next week then.

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

COD has been done to death, It's just the saaaaame thing every time. I agree maybe should be released every 2-3 years.

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

That sounds pretty epic with a website countdown and shit. I will definately buy this game as I loved MW2 but I hated it too.

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

No name developers, same graphics engine, coming out so soon after black Ops......no thanks, im over this series now. Battlefield 3 trailer looks epic and those games dont result in raging like CoD does.

Black Ops, whilst it can be fun, was the worst online experience ive ever had in regards to connection, host migration and lag. Games that reward skill >>>>>>> my connections better so you die first.

Same graphics engine? Do you mean it will look alot like MW2 graphics wise? Because it was terrible graphics wise imo

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

Activision is denying the purported Modern Warfare 3 teaser website Findmakarov.com was created by the publisher.

An Activision spokesperson issued this statement to IGN this afternoon. "There seems to be a great deal of speculation about the next Call of Duty project. Let me be clear that we are not revealing yet. Anything indicating otherwise is a hoax."

When asked if Activision is planning to reveal anything on Wednesday morning, the spokesperson said "Nope," likely ruling out a possible spin-off Call of Duty title.

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

That doesn't explain the dog tags that people were sent, either Activision is lying or this is a really well executed hoax.

Edit: Something from GTTV's Geoff Keighley:

I'm looking into this some more. Maybe it's a publicity stunt by EA for Battlefield or another publisher? Anyone know more?

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

Haha, Ross is trying to create hype for his own game!

A lot of people now starting to believe that it may be EA's doing, as the countdown leads to GDC next week, where Battlefield 3 will be on show.

Re: Modern Warfare 3 - The Prequel!?

i do think that its a bit early to be announcing anything regarding the next call of duty
