Really enjoying Max's weekly analysis. Excited about Oxley, tbh I didn't even notice him when I watched the game (not sure if the commentators mentioned his name either), and knew nothing about him so that's an unexpected bonus.
Interesting what he said about them using an extra Adelaide man running through the center at ball-ups.

Yeah I've really enjoyed it. The first week was a little on the weak-side but that's to be expected with a pilot, this week had some pretty astute comments by Maxy and I couldn't be happier that he's still around the club!

Actually I really liked the first one too. He just has insights that I didn't see, so it really adds to the depth of enjoyment.

Maxy is a very talented man, so happy he is one of ours. Sharp, incisive, loyal, and sensibly spending (some) time away from the club so he can return at a future date to take over - maybe Balme's role?

Thanks for posting that, it's a good segment, the brief explanations of some of the tactics is a nice insight and Maxwell always seemed switched on that way.

Off-topic technical question: It kept stoopping / buffering via the club website; switched to YouTube, and it was seamless. What's the reason for that?

Ed mentioned a few years back that he might take over from Perty one day.

Most likely network config, lack of bandwidth or some combination. There are many, many factors which can cause that type of effect.

This week Max observed that with close in shots, Cloke looks to the goals instead of watching the ball onto the foot, as he does with his long shots.

Only had 10 years to correct basic technique flaws :rainbow:

I cant believe they have said he is now seeing a sports psycologist. Whilst I dont think it would hurt (unless they head **** him and his mind is all over the place when lining up for goal), but his problem is clearly mechanical. His kicking technique and ball drop has been getting worse over the years. His hand placement on the ball is terrible and drop even worse. Plenty of years ago I went to VicKick and was taught how to kick properly and I still to this day can kick better than cloke because I have the basics down pat

I think the point was that he is changing his technique depending on circumstance. When he kicks from distance his ball drop and his concentration on putting it on the boot correctly is quite good but he throws it all out the window and doesn't even watch it onto the boot when he's closer to goal.

I get that. Just surprised its still an issue when basic kicking technique should be like being in autopilot mode and nothing should ever change at this stage of his career.

Problem is his basic technique is flawed

I don't happen to agree with that. I reckon he gets the yips when close in. I have no problem with his technique when he's 50m out. To me that says it's all in his head and that's why the club is looking to a sports psych. You would think that he would have sorted it out by now but for whatever reason it now seems to have gotten totally stuck in his head.

I accept that he gets the yips so as i said before I dont think it would hurt seeing a shrink. However his technique is still terrible and he can spray them whether he is 50m out or 5m out. He has probably kicked out on the full more than any other forward in the league. A tight compact kicking technique wouldnt allow this. Tony Lockett was best ive seen. Head over the ball...drop right above the boot with the hand guiding it down all the way. Cloke is like oppisite to Locketts technique. Clearly its a combination of both but I think the technique is something you can work on - and once you have confidence you are going to kick straight you wouldnt get the yips as much

There's no doubt his technique could be better but his conversion from 40+ is more than acceptable. While I would be more than happy to improve on that, I'd be much happier with him fixing the close-in yips first.

Its a chicken v egg scenario!

I don't think they've given poor trav the tools to do the job. By prescribing drop punts for all shots other than snaps and bananas....they have punished the toe kicker that is poor trav.
He needs to play more golf or alternative sports and see how players of all sports adapt shots to their own techniques and requirements. For instance: Trav kicks at 65-75% from outside 40m so he has that shot in his bag. He's comfortable using the drop punt there. In on the point post he uses a banana or a snapshot if he's playing on....so he can do those as well. But from inside 35m Trav struggles because his natural drop punt straightens late in its flight and he knows he has to aim right to draw it back towards the centre of the target.
Changing his runup, hand position, glove, ball drop, follow through is just confusing the poor bloke....its paralysis by analysis.

I'd suggest: Anything outside 40m....drop punt. Angled kicks use the bananas and the snaps he knows already.....and for anything inside 40m that he's not snapping....use a flat punt. The ugly old flat punt will give Trav more to aim his pointy toes at and it will allow him to kick it as hard as he likes from any distance because a flat punt's range is only about 45 m.

He's then only have to know or think about : Where am I on the ground?? Ok that means I kick this.....

not point the toe, three steps in, drop carefully onto my instep (where the &%^*'s my instep anyway?) follow through looking at the top of the grandsatnd.....etc etc.....kick out the shrinks and the biomechanists (I'm one myself so its ok) Clokey needs to keep it simple.
