Over their careers, Monfries still beats him in nearly everything Betts scores under half a goal per game more.

Betts is winning easily in the most important stats for a small forward - kicking goals and laying tackles.

If you prefer a pocket who likes to accumulate cheap kicks on the wing then pick Monfries. If you'd prefer someone who stays deep and actually plays the position properly then Betts is your man imo

* Interesting argument that derailed another thread imo so I turned it into a poll

That's nice, if that's all Monfries does. But he's not just a small forward - he's a midfielder as well.

Incidentally, did Betts ever kick 7 goals in a game like Monfries did last season? Against Geelong at Kardinia, too.

Good move. As you said, over their career Betts trumps Monfries in most key small forward stats ... goals, goal assists, tackles, 1%'ers, even clearances. Contested possession and contested marks are similar; the only place Monfries really stands out is uncontested footy and uncontested marks ... oh and clangers.

Monfries just came off his best ever season, while Betts had his first average one in five years. Comparing Betts and Monfries best, Betts has had couple of better seasons. In game, Monfries best return is 7 goals last season and then one other bag of 5. Betts has kicked bags of 5 or more 10 times, including 8 in a match.

Betts for me without batting an eyelid.

Betts is one of the best small forwards in the game and certainly over the last 10 years along with Milne, if it was for last year you pick monfries but over there career betts easily

See the above post. Betts tops that with a bag of 8 goals. And many more games of 5 goals plus.

Both started their careers in 2005 and since then, last season is the first head-to-head season Monfries has been better than Betts bar perhaps 2006.

Lol man Betts kicked 8 goals a few years back and not to mention 2 50 goal seasons

When Monfries corrected his kicking at goal in the second half of 2013, he became one of Ports best players each week (IMO). Constantly won 1 on 1 contests and was super reliable all over the ground, without being outstanding (except the 7 goal bag, a couple of hangers, a right angles goal and a Heath Shaw meltdown).

To be honest, I didn't see or hear much of Betts in 2013. I don't like to look at stats, so I won't. I certainly can't accurately guage a small forwards performance on GOALS, when the forward line doesn't really have a good tall, unlike PAFC...

To me, it's a strange comparison. Monfries spent time up forward, in the backline and with the mids in 2013...

Eddie Betts is the much better goal kicker and is also a better crumbing small forward, but overall though Monfries is the more complete player. I'd be leaning towards Monfries. Very close though.
