I reckon we should be gettin more players from SA coz they wont leave and we should be looking at the SANFL's Top Goalscorers who are not with a AfL club and getting them

LOL…and that leading goal scorer in the SANFL would be the one and only former Adelaide crow him self…

Daniel shell

Not sure if the club is going to go down that road again.

“Go well, don’t go shell”

could you imagine Dan Hargraves with his huge fitness levels at AFL?? honestly not a good idea.. its a huge step up from SANFL to AFL

Does the name Adam Richardson ring a bell?

He wasnt able to step up even when he was one of the leading goalkickers in the sanfl for 3 years or something.
Although I think he was given barely any chance to show what he could do.
If he had kicked 4 goals instead of 1.3 or whatever it was against the Dockers things might of been different!

Agree completely. He played well in the pre-season, had a big body and looked good in the game he kicked 1.4 - 4 or 5 goals may have prolonged his career, and I think it was a bit unfair on him. He had one bad half against Richmond but was never picked again, despite going nuts in the SANFL and kicking 12 or 13 several times. Another Ayres mistake, when our forward line was pretty much dysfunctional anyway.

Balraj Singh? Brodie Atkinson? Adam Richardson? Lucas Herbert? Darryl Wintle? Dean Howard? Matt Golding? Justin Cicolella? Tim Cook? Sudjai Cook? Bryan Bienke? Ricky O'Loughlin?...

We tried that once already - hell, half of that list above were recruited/drafted as top-ups for a side looking for its third consecutive Premiership.

and i think most of our list problems stem from the Malcolm Blight era of "recruiting" - too much emphasis on top-up players (in lieu of younger raw players with potential) hence giving us absolutely zero chance of anyone developing into a star or even into a tradeable commodity

Well why not approach the evil neighbour PORT about trading for ELLIS for chf
hes big enough bad enough to slot in
Perhaps we need to think outside the square get in and pip the other teams lets get a macmahon that the bulldogs want from here surely other sanfl supporters can name some young players
I sure the AFC reads this board give them names (they should know them anyway)
We need to be as the song says a team for all south aussies

cheers

You can't trade rookies but I think he can nominate for the draft. His season has been interupted by injuries but Port will get first call whether to put him onto their main list.

Certainly would want Ellis here at the crows, I doubt he will ever get much of a chance at Port, look at White, poor bugger been killing it in the SANFL and hardly gets a game in their side. So chances of Ellis getting a game for them if he gets promoted are slim.

And yes, the above listed 'garbage bin' is full of slime and trash, apart from Cicolella. He should have been kept IMO. How Singh even got pickd is totally beyond me....he didnt even play SANFL I dont think?

I agree with your sentiments, local SA players are better to recruit in the long term.

Is that the reason also that they went for a SA coach (Craig), instead of a better VIC one (Eade, Wallace)?

I've posted around here before that I don't subscribe to the "recruit SA players" theory for a number of reasons.
You need to go for the best talent - no matter where it is.
Other States will always take SA talent - so the pool will always be diluted here - so by picking just SA talent we would be at a disadvantage in relative terms.
We need to have "foreigners" on our list so that when our boys want to come home we have something to offer in return
It's a national competition - and dont be surprised to see the draft/contract systems continue to evolve given the "I want to go home" mentality has become more prominent.
As for the SANFL - unfortunately it hurts to say that it has become a comp for the young hopefuls and the hasbeens or neverwas's - Schell and Hargreaves were a perfect illustration.
Blighty could sure coach to flags but his recruiting still needs work - heres a couple of the more forgetable ones together with the number of games they played (by the way Singh and Cicolella were Ayres fault)
D Gallagher 26
C Sampson 24
C Rintoul 23
L Herbert 14
B Stanfield 13
I Downsborough 12
T Cook 8
M Golding 7
S Cook 7
A Keating 6
B Atkinson 5
L Picioane 4
D Wintle 3
T Gilligan 3
D Howard 2
L Stevens 2
C Kirey -
G Dempsey -
N Laidlaw -
B Parker -

Yes. I want Ellis here too.

I'm all for selecting young SA players at draft level. I'm trying to think of a nonSA 18-19 yr old draftee that has stayed here and played a few games and sets up house here for the long haul. I will wait for some replies to correct me.
I know we got some mileage from Stenglein and Johnson and I hope we can get some out of Watts, Reilly and perhaps Schuback. I'm thinking mainly of players from WA and Vic

I dont mind trading or drafting an older player from interstate - eg Mahoney at Power -theres no way he's going to say he gets homesick and wants out!

Yep -an ordinary list and we could all add a few more -I'm not if the other clubs along the way have made similar dud choices but we have certainly made our share. I will, however, excuse Bryan Bienke from that list - he did at times contribute to the team and cause me on occasions to cheer at something he did.
