Recycled for the third time:

DT's Crow All-Hacks (have played at least 1 senior game in AFC colours):

FB:... Allan Bartlett .... Brett Chalmers ... Lance Picioane
HB:... Ben Nelson ........ Evan Hewitt ...... Dean Howard
C:.... David Gallagher ... Nick Pesch ....... Clay Sampson
HF:... Josh Mail ......... Jonathan Ross .... Adam Saliba
FF:... Tim Cook .......... Daniel Schell .... Ricky O'Loughlin
FOLL:. Aaron Keating ..... Darryl Wintle .... Brodie Atkinson

IC: Ashley Fernee, Tom Gilligan, Linden Stevens, Matthew Shir

TALENT!
Excellent list, but disagree with Jonathan Ross, Adam Saliba and Clay Sampson. All these guys had talent to burn, but for one reason or another didn't utilise it. I define a hack as someone who is outright useless and never would have made it, the three I mentioned had undoubted talent, but one had a serious case of boganitis, another a serious case of preferring not to train unless he felt like it and the other was just plain hot and cold.

And for the opposite side of the draw, my best unrealised talent that actually played a game=Shane Tongerie. Could have been anything after that first game he played, but injuries (cardboard hamstrings) and discipline cost him dearly.

Evan Hewitt is a bit unlucky there. Surely I Downsborough would be your first choice at CHB?

Unfortunately for Adam he was beaten on the night by David Bourke. After that it was goodnight nurse.
Too right, if you're beaten by David Bourke then there's no salvation. In fact I think that would be the definition of humiliation- even Dennis Pagan couldn't recycle Bourke into anything resembling a footballer. Francis must have hid in shame each time his son got near the ball.

For mine the most useless and least courageous player are one and the same:
Darren "Footsteps" Smith. Built like a tank with a heart like a pea. Great in the SANFL, but an unmitigated disaster at AFL level. Even his own team mates used to take potshots at him about backing out of contests.

I don't know that he was ever going to make it, but I do think he suffered from not getting enough consecutive games. It was like they threw him in for 2-3 games, then dropped him when he didn't show the goods, then repeated the cycle... I don't think he ever got more than 2-3 games in a row? He struck me as the kind of player you needed to just persist with for 6-8 games and then make the judgement.

Im sure someone else could clarify this but Im pretty sure Richo only got to play 2 games, his first, against Freo and then his second against Richmond.

I dont thibk he was ever going to be a star, but I think its a bit hard to judge a bloke on 2 games, chirst we have given Smith 5 years  :D

Yep. 2 games for a return of 1.4

I was at the G that night against Tigers - great win for us as as we kicked 7-8 in the 3rd qtr to blow the game apart

Seeing him that night I must admit to thinking he would struggle to play again as he just didnt look up to it

He wasn't referred to as "Doreen" by the Port supporters because he was brave..... :D

I like all of them Macca. Although I must say when he sings the chorus in Faryaad his voice seems to struggle with the higher notes. IMO Solatis best work is "The Camels a Liar " sung to the tune of Bruce Springsteens "I'm on fire" and "ohhh Baby, come climb my pyramid of love".

When I first constructed that team, one of the factors that I had in mind was the cost of the player and overall return on that cost.

Evan Hewitt cost us a shedload (was it a first rounder or a pair of second rounders?) and gave us nothing in return. Downsborough was more of a junk deal IIRC, and whilst he was dire, Keating and Gilligan were worse as ruckmen.

Welcome aboard :)

'Thanks' for that team DT - it redefines mediocrity :(

I take your point on Ross and Saliba, but the fact they had copious talent was all the more reason to include them. Such an utter waste, and unlike injury-plague victims such as Ryan Fitzgerald and Collingwood's Lee Walker, they've only themselves to blame for not realising it.

Disagree completely on Clay Sampson however.

He was discarded from a dire Melbourne side (finished 14th), was nothing more than a dodgy stopgap utility for us, before moving to Richmond, where he was and is still less than well-regarded.

In fact, if you do a thread search on the Richmond board using the keyword 'Sampson' you'll get:

'Field of Duds'
'Richmond's Worst Team 1990-2003'
'Richmond's Greatest Ever ...'

Says it all.

Good call. I don't remember what we coughed up to get Ev, but no doubt it was too much. I had such high hopes for him.......in fact I can't recall being as excited about obtaining a player since we got hold of Barry Standfield :D

Thanks for the welcome.

barry stanfield - remember when he retired to become a manager at a foodland shopping centre !!

I didnt realise we wasted so much on hewitt - did we just get him because of THAT tackle on Rehn ???

mind you about as useful as an athiest at the pearly gates

On the Downsborough deal, I think we traded him for Chalmers. Not sure who came out on top in that one......

The finest lose-lose deal of recent times. :D

As disappointing as Chalmers was at AFL level Port definitely came out on top in that one.

Welcome to our board Truck. :)
I dont agree (stats may prove me wrong) but he was another scott hodges, better off without him - Ian probably wasnt the best swap but it was funnny all the same - mind you he is another Western Australian isnt he ?

the amount of Western Australians the Crows pick makes me think we are trying to get the same concessions as Sydney and Brisbane (that is players from outside of home state)

Actually I would like to Place Daniel Schell on the list as well - how and why we traded for him is beyond me
