You don''t drop any player from a back six that played so well last game!!!!!!

Also can people please get off the back of Murphy. Ok you have made it quite clear that you dislike like him...... Fine...... Just stop going on and on about it......... I am really quite sick of it.

Murphy has done fine all year and plays his classic defenders role very well.

We should be very proud of the whole team this year. They have been really great ( better than anyone is actually thinking).

Well done boys and Good luck this Friday..................

Watching the replay.. And call me a hater but I seriously don't understand what he brings to the team accept "leadership". Yes it's about structures but he doesn't offer any rebound or punch or take marks?

Well in his one and only game as Captain of the HFC he came out with a win...

Oh and yes you are a hater.........

Can we delete this thread now or at least move it to a Bay 13 style board under the Hawks banner? People are going to start calling us Richmond and claiming we eat our own. I bet lots of the Murphy haters were also Mark Graham haters as well!

Why not contact the club and ask Clarko what Murphy's instructions are before deciding he's useless?

I doubt they ask him to take the worst option, zone off on your man who just has to lead to get it, fall over a lot, kick it 20 metres sideways so we have our hearts in our mouth, don't help out in the air and give hospital handballs. If they do, then he is going well. We haven't had this level of amusement in the backline since Luke McStakes was down there.

There wasn't much Murphy love in my vicinity last Friday. All things being equal he would have to make way for someone who gives us run which we sadly lack off half back. Stratts has his pozzy more than covered now. But, of course, there's no way he can be dropped due to 08. Just grin and bear it. He'll probably pick up the criminal this week and run him back into form. Next year, all are on equal ground from the start. With a bit of luck, Gilham and Grimley will force him out.

BTW, I wouldn't look at goals conceeded on their own. Scoring shots is a much better guage of how he is limiting his opponent.

Otherwise, you having to include how effective his antics on the mark are effecting the result on goal.

SJ destroyed him. If we play Geelong again, either he doesn't play or he needs another matchup.

I think the time when Murphy was a good match up for SJ is well and truly over. Always looked a few steps behind him all day in the QF.

I think Murphy's form has being worrying in the back end of the season including both finals. While his opponents stats may have looked low against Sydney, when the swans got some momentum Rohan and Spahnger both lifted and impacted the game. Rohan was the most dangerous player in Sydney's forward line in the third quarter but was starved of opportunities in the first half by our midfield dominance.

Murph is good at nullifying the oppositions 3rd or 4th best defender.

He is serviceable linking up to switch, provide a short target etc... to get the ball out of defensive 50.

As far as this structure goes he is in our best 22.

Unfortunately he is suspect under pressure with decision making and gathering the pill below the knees. He's also not overly aggressive at the player/laying tackles or has the speed to chase down.

It's games like the one this Friday that I think will really test him.

Opinions are not facts, people shouldn't get personally upset when an opinion is expressed they don't agree with. Some people rate Murphy, some don't. Discuss Murphy's pros and cons and don't get caught up in the who's right and who's wrong arguement. Personally I'd have Murphy in the side, but I'd like to see him leave his man and be third up and more pro-active in the aerial contests.

Sam Grimley is a ruckman.... wtf I should have started with the last sentence of your post first. thusly saving myself 30 seconds of my life.

I see Stratton and Murph as similar type players. Both about the same height and weight.
Stratts is better overhead, better disposal and a better decision maker.
Murph prob has Stratts covered at ground level, but Stratts far from disgraced in that dept.
The shutdown role that Murph brings to the table for opposition small/medium forwards can equally be performed by Cheyney or pup.

I'm not wild about Murph, but I dont dislike him either. He has improved substantially since 2008/2009. But I think there are better players on our list that can perform the role better and more reliably.

Just my opinion......

WoW !!!!!! Just Wow

Thought my browser had screwed up and somehow I was on the Richmond or Carlton board.

33% of these posts must be from Tom Murphys mum
33% of them from absolute haters
33% of these posts understand his role and does his best.

I'm the remaining 1%

Yes ......he's serviceable and does his best with limited ability shutting down some small forwards which the coaches seem to acknowledge.

No .......he's prone to brain fades, clangers, signposting, and not hurting the opposition.

Is he guaranteed a spot this friday ...... Probably.

Is he guaranteed a spot in 2012 ....... Probably not.

Guerra Gilham Pup
Gibson Stratton Schoenmakers

add/insert Birchall

But for Christs sake he plays for Hawthorn here and now and he'll be giving it all just the same as all the other boys.

Love him or hate him or just dont know..... get behind him !!!!!!!

I'd give my left nut to be out there doing what hes doing.

We're the family Club.

And all families have arguements over this and that. But in the end we come out stronger for the better. I will come on here and say what i believe whether you agree with it or not.

Now everyone get behind Murph and the boys and show some real PASSION !!!!

We need every bit of PASSION we can muster this week to defeat the Wobbly ones.

Im not a lover or hater but im a 100% behind our whole team that includes Tom.

Embrace the players, embrace the team, embrace the passion, embrace the spirit of Hawthorn ... ALL for one and ONE for all.

We're one game away from the ultimate prize.

Good luck Tom :thumbsu:

Good luck Hawthorn :thumbsu:

We have your back !!!!!!!! ;):thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

You may agree to disagree with me by all means .... BUT NEVER question

my :heart:PASSION:heart: for The Mighty Hawks !!!!!!!!!!

Good post. I'm a massive Murphy defender as I think he gets a raw deal from a lot of our supporters.

He's been excellent this year and is not going to be dropped, it's easy to criticize his errors but no one praises his wins.

That said I agree he'll be up against it next year. That said bringing in Lisle for him would be catastrophically dumb.

Also it say a lot the OP is already on my ignore list and is a Hawks supporter by name...

Debating the merits of Murphy (or Shoenmakers for that matter) is pretty futile at this time of year. The selection committee put their faith in Murphy earlier in the season, and Shoey almost as soon as he recovered from his foot injury.

IMO Murphy was gifted a spot in round #7 ahead of better performed players, but he steadily improved and while not being a great strength is rarely a major weakness. Murphys role in the back half won't often see him listed in the best players, he is lucky to get 15 possessions in a game, rarely takes a contested mark or makes a game breaking run, and when he is playing well is more a keepings off, spoiling style player than an attacking defender. His position is a low key, bland, shutdown role, which he does with reasonable degrees of success, he is in the words of Jack Dyer 'a good average player'.

What needs to be focussed on is the alternatives, and whether they would improve the team, not the puerile 'hater' nonsense. There is no room for sentiment in football, if there are better options then Murphy will be OUT, if not then he will hang in there, the same applies to every player in the 22.

In the long term, i can see his position going to Cheney, or to Stratton allowing Cheney to slip in to the back six. That is purely on the current list, and in '12 there could be a few new players, or some BHH players improving. As far as the remaining finals are concerned, as each game goes by it becomes less likely there will be a change to the existing lineup.

What i just dont get is that if you don't view Tom in our best 22 , your labelled a " HATER ".......
Does that then apply too Morton , Young , Cheney.....ect.??
Does that mean that those who def Tom and say he's a better option than , lets say Lisle , in fact are Lisle hater's....:confused:
For what its worth ......i dont see him in our best 22 going Fwd .
Guess call me a Hate, a.....:o:o

This Murphy hating is tiring.

Look I am not a big Murphy fan, but he does his job reasonably well. And quite frankly I cannot see anyone who has recently shown enough form to step into his place, especially in a cut-throat final like friday night.
(Please do not say Lisle, there is only so much laughter I can take in one night)

And for those who are using his form in the loss against Geelong... well, just to name two, Mitchell and Hale all got completely maimed by their counterparts in that game. Should they too be dropped, or be moved?

Spot on.
He must be a very good trainer to be in the leadership group.

I noticed at one stage SJ laughing at how easy he was doing it on Murph. He really could of kicked 8 in that first final on Thommy if he wasnt mucking around with the ball in the second half and trying to take the pisss.

I just get this sinking feeling Malthouse will target Murphy all night this week and they will isolate him and this worries me big time.

I think it is the endless threads on the poor dude, that brings out the hating call.
There seems to be one every week, regardless of his game.

...oh come on.

Secondly everyone of our other main defenders have been isolated by an opposition coach during the year and has often been found lacking. But suddenly no doubt they will isolate Murphy and it'll be the sole reason we lose. There'll be no "Oh [Player X] didn't help out Murphy", the same excuses used to blame Murphy won't be used to save him.

T.Murphy may not be in our best 22 if we had other options or any one better but atm he is in our best 22..

Cheney may be in our best 22 too, also Lisle may be in our best 22 and maybe Savage and maybe Bruest and so on and so on..

But right at this moment in time Murphy is in our best 22 so people might as well just get used to it and stop starting thread after thread after thread about how bad he is because simple fact is that he is in our best 22 atm...

Having sat in front of you at the MCG during the Collingwood game this year, I think I know what one of your mates thinks of Murphy, and it was pretty obvious.

His "jokes" were not funny ...

.

Futile debate deep in September me thinks.

However I believe if we played Lisle ,Stratton ,Gibbo, Birch, Guerra, and Suckling that would be a nice mix of defenders/attackers. Play Shoe forward as a flanker to play head to head (tag) with Reid and run up the ground to spread him from Buddy.

The Pies are a tall side and I reckon this will give us flexibilty to change things up if they get on top in the midfield...godforbid.

So for me Murphy doesn't play but that means jack coz he'll play and I hope he does his job for the team.

I'll back him in:thumbsu:

What does your comment have to do with dasher's post?

What does that have to do with the idea that your instantly labelled a hater for bringing critical discussion to the table?

If you're trying to question the credibility of HBD based on your perceptions of someone he sat next to- then that is really poor logic.

I'm not a Murphy fan, nor am I hater, but I'm getting sick of reading all this rubbish about him.

I hope you all bloody well shut up when you hear silver tonsils whatshisname read out out the words 'number 29.....Thomas Murphy' at 5.12pm on grand final day.
