Just wondering what books anyone recommends about the Dee's. I'm sure there would be some good ones before my time.

I recently read 'The Urge to Merge' - Tiger Ridley's story and cannot recommend it enough to a fellow supporter, or AFL enthusiast. I think his side of the story needs to be heard.

Gave my Dad 'The Red Fox' which I'll be getting into when I get around to it.

I'll even open it up to DVD's for discussion sake - the 150years DVD for example..

Funny you should mention this.

Only yesterday was I looking to buy 'the red fox' however I rang around and no book shop seemed to have it.

Another book to add to the list is, 'Melbourne FC since 1858: An illustrated history' by John Murray. Not a bed-side table book but more of a coffee table book with pictures etc. but nontheless with plenty of reading content.

I am pretty sure that most AFL stores have The Red Fox. I saw it at the Chadstone store recently.

I'd like to pick up the history of Melbourne one. I just turned around and had a look at my bookshelf and saw 15+ cricket books but not even half a dozen football ones :(

Whatever It Takes - Jim Stynes Biography

came out in about 1996 or so. You would probably find it on ebay or any secondhand bookshop.

edit: a copy is now selling on ebay..

Try Melbourne Sports Books for The Red Fox. Great book.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of It's A Grand Old Flag? Can't find one anywhere.

Other books that come to mind;

150 Heroes - 150 Players
Melbourne FC - An Illustrated History
Ron Barassi - Icons of Australian Sport
Sacked Coach by Stan Alves (Full of ridiculous analogies and ludicrous statements, but as long as you stop reading the moment he leaves us you should be right)
The Demon Within by Garry Lyon
Tom Wills - His Spectacular Rise and Tragic Fall by Greg DeMoore (highly recommended. Concentrates more on his cricket career but there's a lot of talk about the early years of the football club)

Haven't got around to Urge To Merge, Whatever It Takes or the Robbie Flower bio but I wouldn't mind grabbing a copy of those along with Grand Old Flag if I can find them anywhere.

Cheers for the contributions. For those recent titles I wouldn't be suprised if the club stil had some copies.

I've read Demon Within, a good easy read. I read it just before Urge to Merge, and it was interesting to get two different, very important perspectives on a huge issue in our history. I don't know everyone's stance on the merger, and I'd like to know them, but I'll plug it again - it is a very insightful read.

(I was going to clarify that Speccie Magee novels don't count haha)

The Story Of The MFC 100 years history ,written by E C H Taylor , introduction by Menzies , great read especially the early years , written in 1958 , hard to get book but I got mine of ebay for $ 50 , from a bulldogs fan no less , the 125 years history , intro by Bob Hawke , very good book as well covers everything upto 1983 , another ebay find .
All i need now is the 150 years history and i will have the full set of official histories . The Red Fox , very good book about the best coach Melbourne FC / Football has ever seen .

Just looked on ebay , The Story Of Melbourne FC 1858/1958 is for sale starting bid $100 , also cheap book on Robbie Flower as well
