I am currently doing summaries for every club. Adelaide is the first club I did. Here It is:

Adelaide Crows

The Adelaide Crows proved many wrong by progressing significantly. The crows were hyped up to be bottom four contenders before the start of the season, however they concluded their season on a tremendous note, finishing 5th. This is an outstanding result for the club.

Adelaide still possesses an extremely strong side. They have a variety of key forwards in Hentschel, Gill, Walker, McKernan Tippett and Sellar, however I still see this as a weakness at this stage. All of those players have a lack of AFL experience, but will only get better. Adelaide is a tremendously versatile side. Porplyzia, Vince Douglas and Goodwin can play midfield and forward. Edwards, Mcloed and Symes can play back or mid. Then you got swingmen in Bock, Stevens and Johncock. This creates various options when the team is struggling.

Adelaide’s Best 22 in my opinion:

B: Brad Symes – Ben Rutten - Graham Johncock
HB: Tyson Edwards - Nathan Bock - Andrew Mcleod
C: Nathan Van Berlo – Scott Thompson - Bernie Vince
HF: Jason Porplyzia - Kurt Tippett - Simon Goodwin
F: Brett Burton – Taylor Walker - Richard Douglas
R: Ian Maric - Chris Knights - Robert Shirley
INT: Brad Moran Scott Stevens - Michael Doughty - Patrick Dangerfield

Unlucky: Brent Reilly – Trent Hentschel - Nick Gill - Jonathon Griffin - David Mackay

Brett Burton – Is currently injured At the moment, thus meaning he will not play early on in the season. At his best, he is easily one of the best medium forwards in the AFL. He is very hard to match a defender on him due to his strengths. He is fast and a very strong mark.

Taylor Walker – An extremely highly rated young kid who is believed to have the attributes of a superstar. He is believed to be the Adelaide Crows superstar forward. Neil Craig has great faith in the kid too. He believes he will make a huge impact on the field as soon as he debuts.

Richard Douglas – A versatile player who can play midfield or forward. He can have his day and kick goals but can be quiet at times. Is still only 20 and has a lot of time to improve his performances and consistency. 2010 will most likely be his breakout year.

Jason Porplyzia – This kid is just a star. He had is breakout year in 2008 and is looking to improve in 09. He kicks goals and perpetrates many clearances. Very clean disposal and has a very solid and strong body. He is one of the most balanced players I have ever seen. Rarely loses his feat.
Kurt Tippet – Kurt displayed some promising potential last season. He has shown that he is more than capable of taking a great mark or kicking a tremendous goal. I believe he is a very similar player to Cameron Mooney.

Simon Goodwin – Proved to us this season that he is capable of playing up forward. I thought this was a superior move by Neil Craig. Has made room for some kids to develop in the midfield, and also got the best out of the aging Simon. Will have another great year in 2009, without a doubt.

Nathan Van Berlo – What a great season this bloke had. Absolutely dominated and has proved to be one of Adelaide’s best midfielders. At the age of 22, I believe he still has a lot of great years ahead of him. Expect more attention from the taggers of opposing teams.

Scott Thompson – Top 10 midfielders in the AFL. He can play either in the midfield or up forward. I remember there was a game where many of Adelaide’s forwards were missing. He decided to play up there and BANG! Absolutely dominates the game.

Bernie Vince – Had a tremendous season and at the age of 23, he had too. Has finally locked himself in the best 22 and is an extremely vital player to the Crows. He and Porplyzia demonstrated what they can do. I believe Bernie will be a star half forward / mid in the coming seasons.

Ivan Maric – With the departure of Hudson and Meeson as well as the retirement of Biglands, Maric was left to lead the inexperienced Adelaide ruck division. Has a very solid body and has the ability to kick goals which is a vital attribute for a ruckman to possess. Due to his pre-season injury, he had to battle his way back in the team and he successfully did so.

Chris Knights – Chris was an absolute steal in the 2004 draft going at pick 56. He has progressed very well throughout the year and racks up a lot of the ball. The only real downside to his game at the moment is his kicking. Hopefully he works on this during the pre-season.

Robert Shirley – Would not be in the 22 if it wasn’t for his tremendous tagging ability. He shut down a variety of superstars throughout the season. He needs to continue to be consistent with his tagging or else he will be replaced.

Andrew McLeod – Had another good year as he has been doing for quite a while now. Played more up the ground, however I believe his position is as a running back man/ wing. The great thing about him is that he is able to play in a range of positions and succeed in doing so. Will not improve significantly next season due to his age.

Nathan Bock – This guy finally proved what his capable of this season. Obtain an All-Australian selection as the centre half back is just phenomenal. He is no doubt one of the top defenders in the game at them moment. The great characteristic about his is that he can defend as well as rebound extraordinarily.

Tyson Edwards – Going backwards, but is still a great player. I will expect him to retire at the end of next season. He can play midfield, forward and back which is a great factor. Don’t expect his aging legs to improve next year.

Graham Johncock – Did not have the greatest of seasons, due to some offield issues which did vitally affect his form on the playing field. Expect him to have a more consistent year next season because he is currently undertaking a lifestyle course as well as training hard in the pre-season.

Ben Rutten – One of the best shutting down footballers in the game. Gets the job done regularly and is a key asset in the Adelaide defense along with Bock. I believe they are possibly the best combo in the AFL.

Brad Symes – After struggling to obtain a game at Port Adelaide, it was a successful move to depart to his rival club. He received many possessions and rebounded well from defense. The only real flaw in his game is his kicking.

Brad Moran – Probably the clubs second best ruckman. He began to show some impressive signs in the seven games he played. He booted six goals and if I recall correctly, there was a game where he utterly dominated. More game time will see additional improvement.

Scott Stevens – Can play either end of the ground. Not the greatest of players, however he can have his games. He is a solid contributor at best in my opinion. I remember he totally conquered a game in the final series or round 22. He will have a similar sort of season next year.

Michael Doughty – Had one of his personal best seasons this year. Proved many critics wrong by averaging 21 disposals throughout the year. He is a solid contributor who puts 100% every game. For his sake, I hope he has a similar sort of season in 2009.

Patrick Dangerfield – This guy is an awesome player to compliment his awesome name. He began to receive a few games late in the season and continued to advance exceptionally well. Too early to predict his career, however I believe it is safe to say that he will be a good player.

Backline Summary – I believe it is no doubt one of the best backlines in the AFL. It consists of star key positioned players such as Bock and Rutten. Their smalls can both rebound and defend at an exceptional rate. One of the key characteristics to the Adelaide’s backman is their pace. Doughty, McLeod, Symes and Johncock are all extremely speedy. This assists them both defensively as well as when they are attacking.
With the loss of Bassett, it may cause some concerns. It is always good to have a player who can play both small and tall. Scott Steven’s could possibly fulfill this role to a excellent manner.

Midfield Summary – The midfield has a mix of youth and experience. It consists some experienced players in Scott Thompson, Robert Shirley as well players like McLeod, Goodwin and Edwards who have stints in the midfield. The midfield also consists of high-quality youngsters such as Van Berlo, Vince and Knights. They are showing very good signs at the moment and are a dominate midfield.

Forward Summary – Adelaide’s smalls are absolutely brilliant. Burton, Goodwin and Porplyzia are amongst the top small forwards in the AFL. Douglas is still developing and at the moment looks to be a solid contributor. Their tall forwards, as I have stated may be a concern in 2009. They all have a lack of experience, but hopefully they will be ready for 2010.

Overall, I believe the Adelaide Crows have a strong determined side, however a lack of experience from their key forwards may affect them slightly. They have a mix of experience and youth throughout the team which is positive. I see them finishing around 5th-8th. I wish all the best to the Adelaide Crows in their 2009 campaign.

There may be many spelling or grammar errors becuase I am only 14. Constructive criticism is recomended.

While I haven't analysed the above in detail yet, I do want to say that if you are only 14, that's an exceptional analysis you've done there.

I doubt that I could have done the same thing at your age.

Well done. :thumbsu:

Brad Moran – Probably the clubs second best ruckman. He began to show some impressive signs in the seven games he played. He booted six goals and if I recall correctly, there was a game where he utterly dominated. More game time will see additional improvement.

Fair effort there :thumbsu: Didn't read it all through but saw this bit on Moran. I would say he would be our fourth best ruckman behind Griffin, Maric and Tippett. He's stronger as a defender or forward. I mean, he's alright in the ruck, doesn't disgrace himself, but to me his timing isn't that great.

Thank you very much. I wish to undertake a Journalism course in the future, so this gives me some practice.

For a 14 year old Essendon supporter that really is excellent work. I mean that as a compliment. You seem to have a far better understanding of our players than many Victorian journalists have.

I'd disagree that Brad Moran is the 2nd best ruckman on our list. I'm not too sure where he fits in just yet. He may be a bit of a Mr Fixit who gets moved around a bit and is in and out of the side on a needs basis.

Also I don't think you'd find many on here who would agree that we finished the season on a tremendous note :p

Excellent summary, enjoyed the read. You must know alot about football, if you plan on doing this for each and every team!

I'd swap Doughty for Reilly in the best team though, regardless of what sort of year Doughty had, Reilly is all class when fit. We may also see Porplyzia play a more permanent role in the midfield if all goes well with his shoulder. Also I wouldnt say our small forwards are brilliant, as we still lack a quality crumbing forward. Porplyzia will be a midfielder, Goodwin and Burton are more medium forwards. Hopefully Petrenko can cement himfelf as the crumbing forward we need next year

Thanks guys. It was really a toss up betweem Griffen and Moran. I believe they both contribute to the club at a similar rate.

Very impressive H2G.

I'd have Mackay in the best 22. Played 19 of 23 games last year, and with another pre-season under his belt, should definitely cement his place in the 22. Very classy player, just hope Craig gives him more ground time next year.

Add me to the list of those impressed :)

A couple of things... Maric's first name is Ivan, not Ian ;) Also Mackay must be in the best 22 next year... as for who goes out to make way for him, that's a harder question :o

I'm not 100% sure of Burton's height but I don't think he's a small forward, and Doughty doesn't really possess a huge amount of pace.

Still an extremely well-researched write-up that shows a fair bit of knowledge about the Crows' side. I couldn't do that about Essendon's side (or any other's teams side besides Adelaide for that matter) so kudos to you! :thumbsu:

Great effort. Especially from a 14 year old supporter of another club. Really good effort.

Only things I would have is for mine Reilly and Mackay are both in the best side. If Reilly can ever get himself fit and stay out on the park I think he will rival Thompson for our best midfielder. He is a silky player who is so damaging when he gets his hands on the ball. Was showing in Round 1 last year what he can do until that thug Minson got him. Mackay is probably the classiest of our young midfielders. Still looks thin and bloody young out on the ground, and has yet to rack up masisve numbers, but when he gets it he has so much time and uses it so well. He is going to be an absolute star.

Also Griffin is still our second best ruckman for mine. I always believed Maric was number 1 and was worried when he wasn't getting a game, but it seemed to have the right effect when he was given a go. Griffin needs to be able to play out a whole season, but I feel with Griffin and Maric we could have oe of the best ruck combinations in years to come. Also in terms of spelling it's Ivan and not Ian.

Personally I don't know where Moran fits in. For mine he is a good depth player and very good to have in case one of the rucks goes down or is badly out of form, or if we need a key forward or back. He can pretty much play anywhere, but I'm not sure if I ever see him being excellent in any one position. With Maric, Griffin and Tippett all in my best side I don't see room for Moran unless injury strikes.

Well done champ :thumbsu:

Good effort for a 14 year old, especially on an interstate team.

I dont think Doughty is 'speedy' though, but it could be because he's so young.

as someone pointed out, Morans 'Ruck ability' is probably 4th for the team, yet I don't see him as a ruck, more a Goodes, reverse Richo (defensive wing) type.

I'd have Rielly in our best too. As long as he's healthy, he's in our best.

Well done mate.

Adelaide’s Best 22 in my opinion:

B: Brad Symes – Ben Rutten - Graham Johncock
HB: Tyson Edwards - Nathan Bock - Andrew Mcleod
C: Nathan Van Berlo – Scott Thompson - Bernie Vince
HF: Jason Porplyzia - Kurt Tippett - Simon Goodwin
F: Brett Burton – Taylor Walker - Richard Douglas
R: Ian Maric - Chris Knights - Robert Shirley
INT: Brad Moran Scott Stevens - Michael Doughty - Patrick Dangerfield

Unlucky: Brent Reilly – Trent Hentschel - Nick Gill - Jonathon Griffin - David Mackay
i think thats a pretty good starting 22. we will never get 1 which everyone is happy with but i think this has got to be 1 of the best 1s i have seen. interesting to see edwards in the back line because i always thought he was pretty handy in the forward line but i still think he could play down their pretty well.

Very, Very good for what i read. I just dont have the motivation to read something so long. Everything up to and including Maric is very good.

I really like the best 22 you have, every time I do one about 5 players I want in the squad cant make.

Ill extend on this post at a later date once ive read it all.

Wow and I thought all Victorians were ignorant when it came to the Crows, but I've been proven wrong by a 14 year old! Top effort that.

I'd probably swap Moran with Reilly, and Dangerfield with Mackay - only going by 2008. Dangerfield will almost certainly be in the best 22 by the end of '09.

Edwards is definitely slowing down. He would be a risk in the backline. At this stage, one would have to suspect that his place may even come under pressure from the likes of McKay. McKay got 18th in the 2008 best and fairest (out of players who remain with the side) so it is hard to see why he should miss out.

Pretty good effort from the OP though, regardless of my comments here. :thumbsu:

Thanks guys.

Well it was extrmely hard to fit all the players in. Reilly and Mackay deserve a spot, however I couldn't make room for them. I initially had Reilly in the 22, but decided to put Dangerfield in after he showed great signs in the limited games that he participated in.

Reilly's 2008 season would have been massive if it wasnt for his injuries, he was primed for a huge season. If his body stays fit he'll be fighting it out with Thompson as our number 1 midfielder in 2009 IMO.
