My desktop computer has got the same virus 4 times in the last month. The first time 2 times i just had it removed last time i had my hard drive completley wiped got it back on the 21st Dec and today BANG there it was again

I use AVG its a paid version so it either did not start up or some how turned off must be something else wrong as the laptop gets more use than the desk top

Any one got any thoughts

Get rid of AVG for a while and try the trial version of Nod 32.

http://www.eset.com/

The trial version actually runs like the full version for 30 days, install that update the definitions straight away and run the fullest scan you can. I've used this for a while now never had a problem.

Hey mate, does this virus affect the way your pc runs? Also, its not like a keygen or anything that avg is detecting as a virus? Anyways, you can try download a program like spybot which will run a virus scan and see what that picks up. If you want another program like avg you could also try something like Avast or nod32, just run the free copies and see if they can find something that the other program cannot. If you had some files backed up and keep putting them on it could be one of those that are infected. If you want you can try this to bring back the time of your pc so it was before it had the virus which should work. Go "start" , "all programs", "accessories", "system tools", "system restore" then use that program and bring it back to a date before you had the virus and your pc should be fine after doing that. Probably said too many things to do but hopefully one of them helps. Anyways, goodluck fighting off the stupid virus.

What virus is it?

Try Malwarebytes. Download and run that, its very good. If that doesnt fix it then try running ComboFix.

Secondly, stop looking up dodgy pr0n :D

Thanks for all the advice no doubt I'll end up trying them all and Macca no dodgy pr0n I only use the sites you reccomened haha

I got it back on the 21st and Monday night I get this alert saying your computer is at risk so I click on control panel and security center and it says anti virus is out of date then I get the option to run some scan programme then that's it can't do nothing

mmm weird, whats the name of the scan program? When you try do this does the whole pc freeze up? If so you can go control alt delete , start task manager, hit processes and end the virus program to see if that unfreezes your pc. If everything is frozen try in the end task, end "explorer" it will look like all your stuff is missing but then go the "applications" tab and click "new task..." and type explorer and it will re open it like resetting it without having to turn the pc on and off. That may also help for the meantime

That sounds very much like malware. Run Malwarebytes as someone suggested to get rid of it.
Also make sure you run Windows update to get all the patches etc. It'll keep coming back if you don't patch the holes.

If its the one im thinking of, then I had the same virus about a month ago. The scan program that it runs is actually the virus. It will tell you its out of date and that you need to purchase the program to get rid of it. And after it ran the scan, I then couldnt click on the start bar or open up anything, just had to shut it down and start again....is that what happens?

You need to stop the fake anti virus program from running before it begins, so as soon as you start Windows up, do a ctrl+alt+del and get into task manager, and stop any dodgy looking .exe files that are running. That will stop it and you can then at least go about getting it out of the computer.

Malwarebytes is free and found and deleted the virus for me. I also had a 2nd part to that which would change the links in google search results to random adverts. ComboFix got rid of that.

Macca is this your anti virus programme as well or do you have a separate one i was going to do it during the lunch break but ill attempt it after the Cricket.

I use Norton for my anti virus, which is ok but a bit inconsistent. Malwarebytes is a spyware/malware deletion program which I run once a month.

It happens though...im not even sure what caused it for me. Either it was dormant in my computer for a xx days/weeks before it started, or someone got into an open port, as I wasnt even using it with no programs running when the virus started up.
