My player run-down

I was at the game today and thought that I would go through the list for the benefit of those who didn't go. Keep in mind I only got to the ground mid way through the 2nd quarter and will only go on what I saw.

1. Andrew Walker - Didn't see him out there at all. Suffered a shoulder injury before I got to the ground and will have scans in the morning. Doesn't sound good though.

2. Jordan Russell - Did 1 good thing all game which I saw, which was a tackle. Was quiet otherwise. I'm VERY concerned about him.

3. Marc Murphy - Got a stack of the ball and was actually quite good in general play. Got reported (NOT WAITE) for head high contact, and I was quite near it. I think he could be in some trouble unfortunately.

4. Bryce Gibbs - I'm not sure what game the people that said they hardly saw him were watching. Bryce was excellent through the middle and got plenty of the ball throughout the game. His poise and disposal, as we know, are just unbelievable.

5. Chris Judd - As soon as I walked into the ground he was the first person I saw on the field, resting on the HFF - safe to say I almost creamed my dacks right there and then. Got plenty of the ball and despite clearly going at below his best, you could still tell that he is in a different class to the rest. His goal was superb just after the re-start in the 3rd, brought us all to our feet. Great signs first up!

6. Kade Simpson - Continues to impress. Just a very good midfielder who works hard all game. Got plenty of it and used it well.

7. Adam Bentick - Didn't play.

8. Matthew Kreuzer - Given time, will be an absolute star, I have no doubt about that. For a big fella, the way he moves around the ground is so smooth. His disposal could use a little work though. 2nd, 3rd and 4th efforts are magnificent. Tackled a Bulldog in our forward line after running from the wing to the contest, missed the goal though.

9. Jason Saddington - Didn't play.

10. Richard Hadley - Didn't see much of him, but I like him. Provides a presence in the middle of the ground that we haven't had in a while.

11. Cain Ackland - Didn't play.

13. Luke Blackwell - Didn't play :(

14. Brad Fisher - Didn't play obviously.

15. Steven Browne - Didn't do that much, but what he did was generally pretty good. I was surprised to see him play up forward. Kicked a goal to seal the match.

16. Shaun Grigg - Played down back and provided plenty of run. Played reasonably well and got plenty of the footy. His decision making worries me though and he is VERY handball happy. Makes mistakes that are very costly.

17. Setanta O'hAilpin - Should not play round 1. He clearly isn't fit, and he clearly isn't ready. He has lost a **** load of weight because of his illness and just isn't fit enough yet. Must play in the Ants first up.

18. Paul Bower - Played well for the most part. Got plenty of the ball and provided plenty of run and drive. Like Grigg, worries me with his immediate inclination to handball without really looking and makes silly mistakes when we can't really afford him to.

19. Eddie Betts - I was surprised at his lack of time through the middle. Didn't feature much but as always, provides excitement for the crowd whenever he's near it.

20. Clinton Benjamin - Didn't play.

21. Mark Austin - Didn't play.

22. Shaun Hampson - Wasn't as good as he has been in previous games, but wasn't bad. Was actually pretty quiet. Shared the ruck load with Cloke mainly. Still must play round 1, and will.

23. Adam Hartlett - I was surprised to see him out there because I thought he was injured. Actually looked pretty good. Played at CHF and presented well, kicked a goal or 2. I think if he's fit, he'll play come round 1. There was a moment when I was really worried, I thought he pulled up massively on the wing, but I was relieved to see that it was Setanta tripping over his own feet :D

24. Nick Stevens - Didn't play.

25. Brendan Fevola - Played well. Must have kicked about 4 goals. Was really impressed by his efforts today. He chased hard, led hard and kept the pressure on the defenders until they were in the centre square. Isn't afraid to use his body. Almost pulled down mark of the year! Juddy's arrival seems to have motivated him in a big way.

26. Joe Anderson - Didn't play.

27. Dennis Armfield - Didn't play.

28. Cameron Cloke - Still impresses me with his work. Played well, will be our number 1 or 2 ruckman this year. Showed desire to go around the ground and moved forward a bit too.

29. Heath Scotland - Was his usual self cleaning up down back and moved through the middle. Even snuck forward and had a set shot which he missed, I was surprised.

30. Jarrad Waite - Was pretty good without being great. I have no doubt we're primarily playing him down back but he moves forward which I like. Spends a bit of time out on the wing as a result.

31. Jordan Bannister - Was decent, but shouldn't and won't be in the team unless we have injuries or form drops.

32. Bret Thornton - Continued in his role to roam everywhere around the ground - forward, back and even through the middle. Got a stack of the ball and uses it quite well. Still makes silly mistakes though which is frustrating.

33. Ryan Houlihan - played in the middle and a bit up forward which was good to see. Actually went in for a hard ball and I nearly died from shock. Skills are brilliant as usual.

34. Simon Wiggins - Didn't play?

35. Aisake O'hAilpin - Didn't play.

36. Darren Pfeiffer - Didn't play? :S

37. Jake Edwards - I would be incredibly surprised and annoyed if he didn't get his chance in round 1. Kicked 3 goals today playing out of the goalsquare and thought he was our best forward. His marking is very good and his kicking for goal isn't too bad either. Good height for a 2nd or 3rd forward. Will feature in the seniors this year without a doubt.

38. Ryan Jackson - Will be a regular through the middle in the seniors. I continue to be super impressed with Jacko. His efforts and running are excellent, and his disposal is very decent. Will play round 1. Gets a heap of the ball which is encouraging.

39. Sam Jacobs - Didn't play.

40. Michael Jamison - Continues to impress. Is very sound defensively and looks ready for a very good year. Disposal isn't great, but doesn't have to be. Barely makes a defensive error.

41. Lachie Hill - Didn't play.

42. Michael Shields - Didn't play.

44. Andrew Carrazzo - Played his usual game. Not a standout, but racked up the possies. Turns the ball over quite a bit.

45. Aaron Joseph - Didn't play.

46. David Ellard - Didn't play.

Overall was quite impressed but it's clear that errors continue to cost us dearly.

Our defense looks ok, we seem to be spoiling a lot from behind which we havent seen for a while from us, and it's working.

Another negative is that we don't seem to talk. So many times we saw players spoil each other and run into each other, which really isn't good enough and costs us a few times per game. Must improve our communications out on the field.

2 other points:

-The surface of MC Labour Park is magnificent and is easily up to AFL standard still. Was a pleasure to go out into the middle at half time.

-Whoever organised the game should be sacked. Who plays next to the city at 4:30 in the afternoon on a Friday before a long weekend!?!?! Who also schedules the Melbourne Storm family day at Princes Park at the same time!?!?! Absolute madness and stupidity!

If anyone has any specific questions, I'll do the best I can.

Judd was reported on the carlton (afl?) website as being in your best. He had 20 disposals (4+ of which were ineffective). From someone who was there was he really in the best players or is this just a bit of preseason hype?

20 possessions, 1 goal - 50% game time, coming back from injury - looks pretty good to me for a first up performance, dont you think?

It looks very good. But it doesnt mean he was one of the best performers on the ground. I will ask again.

Would you have rated him one of the top 6 best performers for your side on the day?

If yes does it worry a little that a bloke, as good as he is, can have such a low impact is still in your best players?

Some of my observations:

Grigg's played mostly in mid ground. His disposal in this game was top notch, especially his kicking into the forward 50. He had three outstading kicks to forwards that resulted in scoring opportunities. He has a very bright future based on this match.

Hampson didn't play much of the game due to injury sustained during the match.

Bett's is too slow for a guy that is so small and struggled to make an impact on the game. His effort is there, but he's just not good enough at the AFL level.

Browne will need some time in the VFL but showed that he has small man potential.

One series of play which started Judd on the wing kicking to Murphy who beat a player one-on-one and kicked to Fevola in the forward 50 was all class.

Bower showed some superb work at times, with experience we may well be pleased he was not included in the Judd trade.

Thorton was the biggest minus. He made mistake after mistake and was responsible for at least three goals by Bulldogs. As concerning, was his need to hung his head after each mistake, carrying over into his next play. Ratten needs to sit down with him and sort out the body language and encourage more self encouragement instead of the negative aura he surrounds himself with.

The midfield and forward line was encouraging, especially when you consider Stevens return. Although missing Fisher, Walker, Hampson and possibly Murphy for Richmond is going to be sorely felt.

The problem we have is defense, which showed clearly in the 1st quarter. Bulldogs scored way too many easy goals from spoils that made ground only for them to crum and score. Jamison is top notch and Waite looked very good back there, Hadley may be an option to replace Walker on the half back line with his marking abilities, but we still need to find some quick hands that can scoop up the ball and deliver it to the mid-field before the defense becomes AFL standard.

Well thats my two cents worth.

I was at the match with my daughter and he was clearly one of the six best Carlton players on the ground along with Murphy, Fevola, Simpson, Edwards and Gibbs/Kreuzer in my opinion. Kept an eye on him and I'd be surprised if he played more than 50% of the game time, so on a value/minute basis I'd say he was best on the ground; Akermanis was best on ground for the first-half (dropped off in the second half though) - looked very good and should have a very good year for the Bullies based on what I saw.

Apart from Judd, from a Carlton perspective I really liked Kreuzer's game. Welsh showed a bit for the Bullies - got a few goals and looks like he'll take some of the pressure off Brad Johnson.

Overall,

I wouldn't have rated Judd in our best 6 last night.

Thanks. I thought it might have been a bit of preseason hype/Juddsteria! I would be very surprised with the minutes he played and possies he got if he was one of the best players.

Good review thanks
Anybody know what the story with Ellard was? Was he just not good enough to get into the team or has he a problem?

It's the last practise match before the start of the season so we would have gone in with the team that we more-or-less want to see out on the park come round 1.

Ellard isn't in that 22.

Aker was good until Grigg was moved onto him as a run with type player. Thought Grigg did well to shut him out of the game :thumbsu:

Waite looks good down back. I hope this is his year!

B: Bower Jamison Thornton
