My shock pick to succeed Mark Thompson

Mark Thompson announced a few motnhs ago that he wouldn't extend his contract past 2011. I hope he changes his mind. However, if he does, I wondered who would take over coaching the Cats. I have thought of someone who would be really good at the role, and would be available.

That person is:- PAUL ROOS!

As soon as I read the title of this thread I knew you would say Paul Roos. Can't see it myself, although I think Roos is a good coach.

I hope Bomber will sign on for a few more years, but if he goes I can see Sando taking over. I also think Ling will be signed on as an assistant coach once he retires .

Either him or Hinkley. Geelong like what what and who they know. Anyway it would be good to have a Geelong player as coach again , its been too long.

It doesn't need to be a former Geelong player imo, but it definitely does need to be somebody who has coached within the current club & team structure.

When you stop bringing in fresh ideas, approaches & experience to the coaching box, you create inbreeding, and when you have inbreeding & introspection you inevitably in turn generate stagnancy & sterility.

So whether it's Hinks, Sando, Lappin or Caracella some way down the track, what I would like to see is a fresh version of a system which is now developing one hell of a track record. And I really like the idea of Lingy even further in the future, so that the kid's dream he had as a young, big eared, red haired Cats' fan is taken to its furtherest possible extent.

(And for the record, I also hope Bomba hangs around for quite some time to come & adds "Creator of Dynasty" to "Triple Premiership Coach" - ;) - among his swathe of titles & honorariums.)

This is a great point. The AFL game is not a stagnant , fetid contest that is frozen by its own trepidation , banning change and ignoring obvious improvements. We must always stay fresh and current

You are correct , a "Geelong Coach" in not essential. My point on a "Geelong Coach" is that for too long we have had to look outside our own for a bearer of knowledge , for someone who has experienced success.
We have always had our own flavour at Geeelong. We have never been at our best when trying to be a monotone bland football side but now our style is considered...no more than that , its is acknowledged as the perfect blend of entertainment and ruthless , winning efficiency.
In times to come , I'm confident that this Geelong era will produce many coaches for other clubs I just think it would be a waste to ignore elite talent that happens to be in our own backyard.
